Sonoma County Grange Credit Union
President’s Message
One of a credit union’s main functions is to provide affordable loans to its
members. In today’s current low interest rate environment, now is a great
time to refinance your home mortgage or obtain a home equity loan to
finance your business or personal needs. We don’t hit you with a bunch of
fees like a commercial bank might. You are a member-owner and we treat
you as such. Excess profits for us only comes from your pockets so we
Chris Call
run a tight ship to keep your financing costs low and your savings rates high. If you are still
using one of the big commercial banks for your home mortgage or other financing needs,
please re-think your options and come over to the local credit union which you own.
Our staff has been active in the past quarter attending and supporting events in which
our members participate. Monthly Grange meetings, Farmers Guild events, 4-H activities,
Farm Bureau Crab Feed and Ag Days are just of few of the activities that we are a part of.
We’ve recently updated our website to add a new “Classified Ad” feature to assist our
members in buying and selling items unique to the local ag community. We held a free
educational seminar on Estate Planning at the credit union in February and will be doing
more seminars in the coming months. We hope you’ll take advantage of the many benefits
your credit union offers.
Sonoma County is an ideal place to live. We should all support the local farmers
and buinesses here in the county rather than send our money out of the area with chain
stores and national brands. We encourage all our members to buy their food from local
producers, dine at locally owned restaurants, shop at home-grown businesses and, of
course, bank local with Sonoma County Grange Credit Union. Let’s keep our
money circulating in Sonoma County!

and urban activists working together for over 30 years.
They strive to build a movement of rural and urban
people to foster family-scale agriculture. CAFF has
played key roles in enacting the nation’s toughest laws
regulating pesticide use; promoting the development of
organic farming; bringing fresh, local produce into school
cafeterias; and establishing programs to distribute locally grown produce to community
grocery stores, hospitals, restaurants and farmers markets. To

• Do not “float” checks. The “float” is that time delay between when a check is deposited or written
and when the money becomes available or is withdrawn from your account. With the increased
use of electronic check processing, float time has been significantly reduced or in some cases
eliminated. In any event, be sure to wait until funds are available before writing checks.

For many of today’s young adults, the weakest link lies in learning the basics.
According to a 2014 survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Junior
Achievement USA (2014 Teens and Personal Finance Survey), 40% of teens do not
have a savings account, checking account, or debit or credit card, and 59% of teens
do not have money management classes offered at their schools.
Achieving economic prosperity is difficult, and it’s especially hard for young people
who’ve never learned how to manage money.
Your credit union is ideally positioned to respond because we believe in the power
of education. We’re here to help you launch the youth in your life toward financial
independence, and here’s how:
Join. For starters, open a credit union savings account for each child in your family.
As soon as your children can write, have them fill out deposit and withdrawal slips.
Guide teenagers through using a debit card and tracking transactions.
Share. Include your children in household money discussions. Show them how you
budget income and expenses. As their skills improve, give them challenges—such
as finding a better cell phone plan, calculating the total monthly cost of owning a
car, or sticking to a budget for back-to-school or holiday spending.
Coach. Remind your children to ask for help when they need it. And turn to your
credit union when you want help. Our tradition of service and philosophy of selfhelp make Grange Credit Union and all credit unions a natural partner in pursuing
financial security.
We’re here to help. For more information, contact Alex Geer, 707-584-0384
