UZH: Factsheet on how to budget salaries in H2020
projects (Year 2015)
The following minimal salary rates apply for post-docs and doctoral students at the University
of Zurich. We recommend that you budget the rates normally used at your Faculty or
Institute.
The salary rates for doctoral students correspond to the guidelines on SNSF salaries for PhD
candidates. These rates apply as of 01.01.2015 for an occupational rate of 60% and
correspond to the minimal yearly salary without employer’s social contribution. The
employer’s social contribution must be added. The occupational time of 60% covers
exclusively the time dedicated to the preparation of the doctoral thesis (Protected Time). The
occupational time can be increased for additional scientific or teaching activities.
Salary rates for post-docs apply for a full time employment and correspond to the minimal
yearly rate without employer’s social contribution. The employer’s social contribution must
be added. The minimal requirements are a University degree/Master and a Doctorate. The
appointment is limited to 3 years (possibility of extension up to max. 6 years)

Employer’s social contribution – Social contribution varies with age. For your budget, we
suggest to add 15% for PhD students and 16.5% for Post-docs’ salaries.
Exchange rate – The Finance dept. recommends applying ECB’s exchange rate at the date of
budgeting:

Projects funded by SERI - SERI will convert the requested amount from € to CHF, applying the
monthly average exchange rate at the call deadline as published by the Swiss National Bank.
