Elbow Time
At lunch today one of our church members told me they loved what Amanda said in the
most recent children’s message. She said she loved the section of the message about
“touches.” Amanda was talking about the “Spark” children’s program and how it allowed
the church to touch so many lives. How touching these lives was a “spark” and that it
only takes a spark to get things going and soon you would have a fire. This how we reach
people outside of the church, but it’s also the people that are inside the church that are
touched. While at the lunch table, several ladies discussed how we, the church, are called
to go outside our walls and to touch people’s lives. They spoke about how it was the job
of the pastor to equip the church members to do ministry and that it was the church
members who do ministry by touching people. They then spoke of other programs at
other church’s that had changed lives. They spoke about how being the “church” changes
lives and changes the world. It is in these moments that a pastor feels alive. I felt like
Professor Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. “By George I think she has got it!”
Before I was appointed to Crockett, I was sent to new church planting school. It was at
that school I gained knowledge of some of the most important things I have ever learned.
It was in the “boot camp” part of the school where the education really took place. One
of the important concepts they spoke of was something called “Elbow Time.” It was described in this way: if you want people to come to your church, join the membership, and
to get involved, you will need to have elbow time. Our world has changed. People have
stopped just showing up at church. People used to just move to a community and show
up at church. They would get connected because of the yellow pages, or your sign, or
your building. That is a rare occurrence today. To use a sports metaphor; the church
used to have home field advantage. We do not have it any longer. For a while you could
increase your advertising and reach some, but even those days are dwindling fast.
Today, people need to have a friend take them to church. Today people need to be met
many times where they are before they will come to their first Sunday morning service.
Then when they do come to church they need a friend to stand with and an elbow to
hold on to. They need Elbow Time. The relationship with this person originates out in the
world. We make friends in the world, we do ministry in the world, and then, when they
are ready to come to church, we stand with them. We introduce them to people and we
take them to church and Sunday school. It’s Elbow Time that makes the difference.
Each of us makes a difference in by touching people’s lives. We make that difference in
relationship. Touching lives and forming relationships is fundamental to the church.
Jesus never built a building or wrote a book, but he touched lives. Jesus changed lives and
He changed people… and that changed the world. As a disciple, you are invited to do
what Jesus does. In scripture He says you will do much greater things than I have done. I
believe that Jesus meant that as a community of believers we, the church, are able to
change people’s lives for the better, one touch at a time.

June Communion Offering: Peace with Justice
June Communion Offering:
The Communion Offering for Sunday, June 7, 2015
will be dedicated to the Peace with Justice Sunday,
which is annually the first Sunday after Pentecost.
Peace with Justice supports peace and justice ministries through the General Board of Church and Society and the annual conferences.
When you give for Peace with Justice Sunday, your gift
makes possible our critical kingdom work in the
world. Currently, United Methodists spearhead a
peace ministry uniting Arizona border communities;
United Methodists in Liberia are being equipped to
implement the denomination’s Social Principles to address social-justice issues and, Pennsylvania students
are educating their community about sex-trafficking at
home and abroad. These initiatives, and hundreds of
other ones, are possible because of your generous giving.
YAH News
We wish to thank everyone who participated in the
recent Young-At-Heart Garage sale. We had a tremendous amount of donations and so many of you
volunteered to help with the actual sale. All of this together made for a very successful day. This garage sale
is the main Young-At-Heart fund raiser each year. All
profits go for mission work at our church and around
the Crockett area.
The Wednesday Family
Night cooking teams need
additional members. There
will be six teams, each cooking twice a year. This is a
great opportunity for fun,
fellowship and really great
food. Ladies, this includes you also. We would like to
start a Ladies cooking team. If you are interested in
joining us, please call Mary Keller at (936) 544-7491 or
Clayton Starr at (936) 222-0613.

Biblical Garden
GOURDS Cucurbita sp.and MELONS Citrullus lanatus A fast-growing
plant that flourished in the region,
some of which are
poisonous. Decorations used on the Temple, called ornamental buds,
are thought to be a type of wild gourd (1 Kings 6:18).
One of Elisha’s servants put the fruit of one type of
gourd into a pot of stew (2 Kings 4:39) and it is identified in Jonah 4:6-10 as the plant under which Jonah
found shade until a worm came in and caused it to
wither. The people also enjoyed edible MELONS, lamenting in Numbers 11 “…We remember the fish,
which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and
the melons….” Gourds, Melons, and Cucumbers are
all members of the Cucurbitacae family. Gourds were
used medicinally for Cancer, constipation, worms and
neuralgia while watermelon was thought to help dyspepsia, fever, and prostatitis.
