Term 2 Week 1
Dear Groves Learning Community,
Welcome to Term 2. I am looking forward to working
together to achieve the opportunities God has blessed
us with as students, families and staff.
Lest we forget
This phrase comes from Rudyard Kipling’s prayerful
poem (1897) urging the British people, at a time when
British Imperial power was very strong, to remember
the transient nature of human power and not to forget
the sacrifice of Christ.

In common usage, “Lest we forget”, is seen on war
memorials and is spoken at times of remembrance, for
example, Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day. It
reminds us not to forget those who have served and
died in wars.
The commencement of World War One is now over 100
years ago. I never knew my grandfather who fought in
World War One, but I know he didn’t speak much of
the horror that he experienced. I do know that while he
survived the war, he suffered health issues due to the
poisonous gas that was used during endless trench
warfare. While I did not know my grandfather, I did
know men at my Church that served in World War One
when I was younger. Time is passing by, these men are
all gone, yet we remember them because their sacrifice
enables us to enjoy civil freedom in our great Nation,
Australia.
We can draw eternal lessons too, as we remember that
Christ’s sacrifice enables us to enjoy spiritual freedom
now and into eternity, as we respond to God’s calling
on our lives.
Groves Christian College will be remembering ANZAC
Day with a special assembly for Years 4 to 12 this
Friday. Prep to Year 3 will hold special lessons to better
explain ANZAC Day at an appropriate level. Parents are
welcome to join our ANZAC Day assembly. The College
Captains will additionally represent Groves at a
number of wider community events.

moved all the weekly articles into the one College
News. Please note we also have separate calendar
summaries towards the end of the College News for
each phase to make it clearer what is on in each year
level.
Later in the year we will be moving to a new webpage
and other services that will make keeping connected
easier still.

ANZAC Day Ceremony
Friday, April 24
8:30am—9:45am
This year we have again erected a Wall of Honour as part of our Groves’
ANZAC Day commemoration. On this wall we have displayed photos
and service details of family members of the college community who
have served their country in the armed forces.
The Wall of Honour will be on display in the Multi-Purpose Centre at
Campus 1 and the library at Campus 2 from Tuesday, April 21 until
Monday, April 27. Students will be able to visit the display with their
class during this week. It will be open to the wider community on
Friday, April 24, 8:00am – 11:00am as part of our ANZAC Ceremony
for Years 4-12.
