■ Additional Information of Required Documents
1. Two Letters of Recommendation in English
A. Recommendations provide an opportunity for the Admissions Board to gain additional
information about your performance in administrative and academic settings. Your
recommenders should be people who will be able to relate specific and relevant details about
your performance.
B. An applicant is required to submit two letters of recommendation, at least one of which should
be from a former professor. It is your choice whether to have the second recommendation
written by an academic or professional reference.
C. It is left to the recommender’s discretion as to the information that best reflects an applicant’s
suitability for graduate coursework. Recommenders are instructed to sign the letter and enclose
it in an envelope, seal it, sign across the envelope seal, and return it to you.
D. When you receive the sealed recommendation envelopes, DO NOT OPEN them. Retain the
envelopes until you are ready to submit your written application. At that time the sealed
recommendation envelopes must be included as a required part of your application.
E. You are responsible for ensuring that all recommendations are returned to you in time to be
included with your application by the relevant deadline.
F. Letters sent directly to GSIS from the Recommender are acceptable, but may delay the time
required to process an application.
2. Certificate of TOEFL or IELTS score (original copy)

A. Candidates who do not have a citizenship of English-speaking countries are required to take the
Test of English as Foreign Language (IBT TOEFL) or International English Language Testing
System (IELTS: Academic Module).
B. For consistency's sake, Yonsei GSIS considers English-speaking countries as only Australia,
Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
C. Master’s program applicants who do not have a citizenship of those countries must submit either
official verification that their high school and undergraduate education was conducted at
English-speaking institutions or the Certificate of TOEFL or IELTS score report.
D. Doctoral program applicants who do not have a citizenship of those countries must submit either
official verification that their undergraduate or graduate education was conducted at Englishspeaking institutions or the Certificate of TOEFL or IELTS score report.
E. On very rare occasions, when an applicant has graduated from an English speaking
undergraduate program or graduate program and had extensive experience in an Englishspeaking work environment, they may petition the school to be exempt from the English test
score requirement, provided they agree that the Chair Professor who conducts the application
interview with them will make the determination that the applicant has the English-speaking
ability to warrant an exemption from submitting the English test score report.
F. If you would like to submit an English test score waiver request, please fill out the form and
submit it with supporting documents to our office along with other application documents.
3. A Research Proposal in English
Your Ph.D. research proposal plays an important role in the Admission Committee's assessment of
your potential as a scholar. It should include a clear statement of your research topic: what
question are you proposing to study and what evidences are you bringing to bear? A brief overview
of the literature of the field should be included to demonstrate how your research question fits into
the existing body of scholarship. Lastly, you should provide a short description of the proposed
methodology for research.
4. A Writing Sample in English: Term papers or Master’s Thesis of at least 40 pages
