Family Night Out
Come join us May 6th for a Family Night Out at Culver’s. The teachers will be serving
from 4:30pm to 8pm. A portion of the sales will be donated the Nathan Hale PTA.

Attention 4th Grade Students and Parents Dist. 54 Instrumental Music Staff
During April, information about enrolling for school band and orchestra is being
distributed to 4th grade students. Students interested in playing the trombone,
trumpet, clarinet, flute, cello, viola, or violin should return the Enrollment Form to
school, or turn it in at one of the enrollment meetings (listed below). No previous music
experience is necessary to play an instrument. More information will be available at the
enrollment meetings (Parents and students should attend the meeting at the junior high
the student will eventually attend):

Band and orchestra lessons will start in September. If you have any questions, please contact the
band or orchestra teacher at school.
Physicals Required for Junior High Sports J. Connor, Addams School Nurse
School District 54 requires that any student who participates in a team or intramural sport (eg. crosscountry, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, poms or track) must have an approved
physical on file in the health office prior to tryouts. The physical must be administered by a
physician or nurse practitioner and is valid for only one year from the date of the exam. Since sports
physicals are valid for one year from the date of the exam, parents of students who
are interested in participating in any junior high sport are urged to schedule a physical
exam during the summer months. These appointments fill up quickly! This will allow
the student to participate in any sport throughout the school year. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact the nurse at the junior high school where your child will
be attending. Please make a copy of the physical for your own records before turning
it into the school.

District 54 News
School Calendar www.sd54.org
District 54 has set the last day of school to be Friday, June 12th. This change
to the calendar is due to the five emergency closing days taken in January
and February. Don’t forget - that last day is a full day of school.
District 54 Summer Band and Orchestra District 54 Instrumental Music Staff
Registration for 2015 Summer Band and Orchestra program has begun! District 54
students who have completed fifth, sixth, or seventh grade and have had lessons on
their instrument for at least one school year are eligible to enroll.
Summer Band and Orchestra will take place July 6-23 (Mondays-Thursdays) at Keller Jr High.
Registration forms are available from any instrumental music teacher or at http://sd54.org/music/
instrumental/summerprogram. If you have questions, please contact the band/orchestra teacher at
your school or call 847-357-5138.

District 54 Wins Financial Reporting Award sd54.org
District 54 has once again received the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO)
International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award for excellence in the preparation
and issuance of its 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
Only 108 other school districts across the nation (10 others in Illinois) have received the award for
more than 25 years. District 54 has received the Certificate of Excellence for 42 years. The most
recent award was received for the CAFR report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014.
“District 54 is committed to financial statement transparency by subjecting its financial information to
review by its peers and also ensuring that the information is available to our community,” said Ric
King, District 54’s assistant superintendent of business operations.
The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was designed by ASBO International to
confirm school business officials’ commitment to financial accountability and transparency.
Recognition through this program can help strengthen a school district’s presentation for bond
issuance statements and promotes a high level of financial reporting. The award is the highest
recognition for school district financial operations offered by ASBO.

FOOD ALLERGY AWARENESS WEEK

How Can You Be A PAL?
1.
Never take food allergies lightly.
If you learn that a friend has a food allergy, take it very seriously. That means not joking
around about it, or teasing kids who have food allergies. And never try to trick someone
into eating food they are allergic to!
2.
Don’t share your food with friends.
Kids love to share or trade food with each other. But for those with food allergies, that
can be very dangerous. Never offer any friends food from your lunch or snack! Why?
Because it may be harmful to them.
3.
Wash hands after eating.
It’s a good way to clean off any food that is on your hands.
4.
Ask what your friend is allergic to and help them avoid it.
Remind friends who have food allergies to carefully check the ingredients of foods. If
there is any question about a food, tell them not to eat it.
5.
If a friend who has food allergies becomes sick, get adult help
immediately!
Here are some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction: vomiting, swollen face or lips,
difficulty breathing, coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, and skin that is red, bumpy and
itchy.
