Jaguar Jargon Volume 37, No. 7 www.jaguarclubofpittsburgh.com AUGUST 2014 Celebrate Fall at Hartwood Acres! Bring your Jag and a picnic basket and join us! WHEN: Sunday, September 28 WHERE: Hartwood Acres, Indiana Township FOR INFO AND TO REGISTER: See Page 8 Jaguars on Display in Sewickley By Chuck Pipich This year brought another edition of great success for our club’s Annual Display of Jaguars, Rolls Royces, and Bentleys in picturesque Sewickley. Year after year, this is a great show of automotive alloy and steel, graced by weather that is always good. This year was no exception with plenty of sunshine and blue skies, just as it has been for many years in the past. Show chairman Scott Drab arrived early in the morning, along with committee members Gene & Janet Danielle, and Chuck & Shirley Roberts, to begin preparations for the day and start lining up the display of cars as they rolled into the center of town. Principal Some of the cars lining one side of Broad Street sponsor Bobby Rahal Jaguar was also on hand early with their two Photos by Chuck Pipich spectacular vehicles, a new 2014 F-Type Convertible and a 2014 XJ LWB (Long Wheel Base), both looking sleek and elegant. These gorgeous cars attracted as much attention as the classics. Once again this year, we again had service technicians from the Bobby Rahal Service Department on hand to explain the mechanicals and design philosophy behind them, as well as answer many other technical questions about any Jaguar in general.6 They were very interesting to talk to, and had a lot of useful discussion info to share. Bobby Rahal generously donated an array of door prizes that appealed to every Jaguar enthusiast, including shirts, tool kits, and wine glasses – enough so that every entrant walked away with something! Thanks also go to Flynn Tire for the tool kits (door prize), and thanks to Welsh Enterprises for goodie bags. As always, the hard-working judges did a wonderful job and deserve a great deal of thanks for their dedication, knowledge and attention to detail. JAGUAR JARGON PAGE 3 JCOP President’s Message Scott R. Drab, Pharm.D., CDE, BC-ADM This month’s message may sound a little like Thanksgiving, and the reason is because I have so many people to thank. In July, the club held their annual concours in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The Saturday event started off quite rainy and cold but eventually the skies cleared and the sun shone brightly. I want to thank Bryan and Candy Williams, Gene and Janet Daniele, and Terry Smith for all their hard work and effort they put into the gala dinner, silent auction, and the concours show of cars. In August, we celebrated with Jaguars and Rolls-Royce on Broad Street in Sewickley. Once again it was a fantastic day, perfect weather, and great participation by the Jaguar Club of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Rolls Royce Association. I want to thank Charlie and Shirley Roberts, Gene and Janet Daniele, and Chuck Pipich for the hard work and effort they put into making this year’s Sewickley show such a great success. I also want to extend a special thank you to Chuck Pipich who agreed to serve as the new chairman of the Sewickley show, replacing me after seven years of chairing the event. Jaguar confirms it will build the F-Type project 7 The first undertaking of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Vehicles Operations personalization department is the F-Type Project 7, the production version of last year’s Project 7 concept car. Yes, Jaguar has confirmed that it will build 250 examples of the stunning speedster. The F-Type Project 7’s arrival marks the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s D-Type race car, which inspired its design. The Project 7 name, meanwhile, is derived from Jaguar’s seven Le Mans wins between 1951-1990, of which many were achieved with the D-Type. Power comes from Jaguar’s familiar supercharged 5.0-liter V-8, but with output capped at 575 horsepower. That’s 25 horsepower more than what the F-Type R Coupe is producing. The engine is paired with the F-Type’s usual eight-speed automatic and will rocket the car to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and see it keep accelerating until a top speed of 186 mph. Other performance upgrades include an electronic active differential and torque vectoring at the rear, carbon ceramic brake discs at all four corners, uprated suspension and carbon fiber aerodynamic aids. The curb weight of the F-Type Project 7 is said to be 3,495 pounds. Key design elements include the D-Type-inspired fairing behind the driver, a new front bumper, and down force-increasing aerodynamic modifications—including a carbon fiber front air splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser and adjustable rear spoiler. While the original concept car was a single seater, the production version has been transformed into a two-seater, with rollover hoops for both driver and passenger now integrated into the design. A shortened windscreen is also featured, but Jaguar said that a full height version will be fitted to cars delivered to the U.S. because of strict legislation. All F-Type Project 7s will also come with a removable roof, which clips onto the convertible header rail and can be conveniently folded and stowed in the trunk when not in use. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2015. Buyers will have the choice of Ultra Blue, Caldera Red, British Racing Green (all with white graphics options), Ultimate Black and Glacier White (both with grey graphics options) exteriors. Jaguar has officially revealed the pricing details for the F-Type Project 7. Each of the 250 models will base at $165,925 including the $925 destination charge. This is a car I would love to have! PAGE 4 JAGUAR JARGON JAGUAR JARGON PAGE 5 August 9, 2014 Jaguars on Display in Sewickley Continued from page 1 This year’s judges were: Dan Herrmann, Pete Galinowski, Bryan Williams, Rick Bartkowski, Cindy Petersen, Linda Drago, Janet Daniele, and Chief Judge Jim Boffo. Special thanks also go to the planning committee which includes Gene and Janet Daniele, Charlie and Shirley Roberts, chairman Scott Drab. Without their effort and hard work, the show would not have been possible. Thanks also go out to Chuck Pipich, new member of the committee, for the dash plaque designs, newsletter write-up, taking some of the pictures, and agreeing to be the 2015 show chairman. Thanks also go out to the Borough of Sewickley for the use of the venue, and the kind help of their coordinating custodian. Thanks also go out Judges Meeting at the tent, Linda Drago, Janet Daniele, Cindy to the Sewickley Men’s club for parking and manpower. Petersen, Pete Galinowski, Bryan Williams, Dan Herrmann Thanks to Jim Boffo for also answering various technical questions from members throughout the day. By noon, the majority of cars had assembled and the judges began the daunting task of selecting winners from the beautiful array of well-prepared cars. The show is a joint show between Jaguars and Rolls Royce/ Bentley’s. Both marques were well represented and with a few exceptions, the classes were generally structured by decades. The first class was Cars of the 1930s and 1940s, with John Babson taking first place with his 1939 Bentley 4¼ Litre Vanden Plas. Bob Grove, who rarely misses the show, received a first-place award for his elegant XK 120 FHC in the 1950s class. He also won the “People’s Choice, Favorite Jaguar” award. In 2nd place, was Ed Judges Jim Boffo and Rich Bartkowski Graham with his ever-popular 1956 XK 140 Coupe. The venerable Photos by Chuck Pipich 1960s class featured Charlie Roberts’ newly acquired 1968 Maserati st Ghibli Coupe, which garnered a 1 place. A beautiful example, with low miles and original burgundy colored paint. In 2nd place, was Michael Egan’s 1967 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Saloon, and third place was a tie between Bernie Pinsker’s 1960 Bentley S-2 Continental Drophead Coupe, and Frank Bailey’s 1960 Jaguar Mark 2 Saloon. Frank Trebel won a 1st in the 1970s class, for his 1976 Jaguar XJ6C. In the 1980s class, David Gestler took a 1st for his 1986 Jaguar SXJ6 and 2nd place went to 1980 Charles Oke for his 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Sedan. Glenn Hazlett took a first in the 1990s class, with his 1998 Jaguar XJR, and in the 20002010 Class, David Petersen was 1st with his 2003 Jaguar XJ Super 8 VP, 2nd place went to Scott Drab for his 2000 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, and 3rd went to Linda Drago for her 2007 Jaguar S-Type. There were no entries in the 2011 and newer class. The E-type was wellrepresented with five sleek crowd-pleasing cars. Three cars made up the E-types Series 1 (1961-1967) class, where Sam McVeigh was awarded firstplace for his red 1967 Jaguar Etype FHC. Continued on page 6 Walter Blenko’s 1923 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Chuck Pipich’s 1999 XK8 JAGUAR JARGON PAGE 6 August 9, 2014 Jaguars on Display in Sewickley Continued from page 5 Second-place went to John Sopiak for his 1963 Jaguar E-Type OTS, and third went to Matthew Sanfilippo for his1967 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 Coupe. In the next class, E-Types Series 1.5 & Series 2 OTS & FHC (1968-1971), Lewis Gainfort garnered a 1st for his 1970 Jaguar E-Type OTS, and Dan Meyers took a 2nd for his 1968 Jaguar E-Type FHC. There were no E-Types Series 3 entries. The remaining two classes were the XK8 and the Jaguar XKR & SuperCharged. In the XK8 class, Chuck Pipich won a 1st for his 1999 Jaguar XK 8 Convertible, and in the Jaguar XKR & Super Charged Class, we had not one but two of the same special edition XKRs, both being beautiful and uncommon cars. Stuart Steinberg won a 1st for his 2004 Jaguar XKR Portfolio, and Don Taskey won a 2nd for his 2004 Jaguar XKR Portfolio. It was like seeing double! How uncommon for our club to have two of these special edition cars. In the “Display Only” (non-judged) category, there were 5 entries. There was William Casey’s 1933 Rolls Royce Rolls-Royce Phantom II, a beautiful car which won the People’s Choice award for best Rolls Royce/Bentley. Chris Davis’s 1997 Bentley Brooklands was also shown, as was Walter Blenko’s 1923 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. It is noteworthy that the image on the Jaguar/RR version dash plaque was also a 1923 Silver Ghost, which was the car that put Rolls Royce “on the map” so to speak, as a renowned car maker. The Silver Ghost is 2nd only to the Ford Model A in terms of the greatest number of years “duration” of the model run – impressive by any standard. Two other cars that were are also in the display only group, were Anthony Mansfield’s 1967 Jaguar E-Type Coupe, and Dawn DePasquale’s 1997 Jaguar XK8. In closing, this show is always unique and offers a great opportunity to get your car out, see a lot of other great and different cars, and really talk shop about Jaguars et al. This year was no exception, always something special throughout all the classes. Special thanks to all the participants and spectators who came and made the 2014 Sewickley such a wonderful success, and maintaining this long time traditional JCOP event as the wonderful event that it was (and always is). We look forward to seeing you and your cars in 2015! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ More Sewickley Sights … photos by David Petersen Niko Mrkonja knows that cleaning your Jaguar for a show isn’t always fun … … but winning an award is! The Foundation has been created by passionate Jaguar people who donate their time, resources, and services with the goal of better serving the Jaguar Heritage and preserving the marque for future generations. We aim to leave a legacy for our children’s children so that they will be able to appreciate and continue on with the work that we started. The foundation is anticipating opening two museums, one for each coast, where Jaguar cars, books, memorabilia, and related material will be housed and viewed by the public. We are requesting that JCNA members donate any classic Jaguar related items they can to help form these new museums. The Jaguar Foundation will give back to the Jaguar community in many ways: Provide annual scholarships for students interested in Jaguar Automotive Restoration to help cover the cost of tuition and training. Be a resource for historical information related to the heritage and restoration of Jaguar cars. Providing a forum for the exchange of information and ideas for Jaguar enthusiasts. A specialty tool loan program, with specialty tools available on loan. Promote the hobby and encourage people of all ages to become involved with Jaguars. All donations are tax deductible, as the foundation is set up as a 501c3 non-profit, and we encourage all Jaguar enthusiasts to donate what they can to get the wonderful Jaguar Foundation museums filled with vintage Jaguar items.
