President and Published Author
Tori Murden McClure, President
of Spalding University and published
author, will be the guest speaker for
the Paducah Chamber’s Power in
Partnership (PIP) Breakfast on October 17 at 7:30 a.m. at the Julian Carroll Convention Center. The breakfast
is sponsored by Paducah Bank.
In 2010 Tori Murden McClure
became president of Spalding University, in Louisville, Kentucky. Ms.
McClure holds an A.B. from Smith
College, a Master of Divinity from
Harvard University, and her Juris
Doctorate from the University of
Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School
of Law. In 2005, she earned her
Master of Fine Arts in writing from
Spalding University. Her non-fiction
book “A Pearl in the Storm” was published by Harper-Collins in 2009.
A passionate world adventurer
and humanitarian, Ms. McClure is
best known as the first woman and
first American to row solo across the
Atlantic Ocean.
She was also the
first woman and
first American to
travel over land
to the geographic
South Pole, skiing
750 miles from
the ice shelf to
the pole. An avid
mountaineer,
McClure
Ms. McClure has
climbed on several continents. She is a
fully certified emergency medical technician in both urban and wilderness
areas and is a graduate of the National
Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
where she served as the chair of the
Board of Trustees until June 2012.
From 2004 through 2009, Ms.
McClure served as the Vice President
of External Relations, Enrollment
Management and Student Affairs
at Spalding. A longtime resident of
Louisville, Ms. McClure is passion-
ate about the transforming power of
education and inspires individuals
to seek greatness through learning
and to use their talents and skills to
contribute to their own communities.

Sponsorships available
for the Commerce Center
Since opening the doors a few months ago,
the new Commerce Center has quickly become
a favorite destination for business and community representatives from throughout the
region. The building is home for the Paducah
Area Chamber of Commerce, Paducah Economic Development and EntrePaducah.
Offices are also leased to Murray State University Small Business Development Center,
St. Nicholas Clinic Foundation and the McCracken County Community Career Endowment, Inc.
Conveniently located in downtown Paducah,
the building is viewed by hundreds of cars per
day as they make their way downtown on the
Loop. The historic building is best known as
the home of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and
St. Louis Railway. Originally built in 1925 at
the corner of South Third and Washington
Streets, the building was the heart of trade
when produce, meat and other commodities
were shipped to the building by rail and then
unloaded. The railroad pulled out in the mid1980s and the building was empty for most of
the past decade. Now after a total renovation
by A&K Construction, the building is once

Auburn Place Hotel and Suites
Auburn Place Hotel and Suites, owned by
Midamerica Hotels, recently held a ribbon
cutting to celebrate their newly renovated 76
rooms (all mini suites) hotel. Previously the
Holiday Inn Express, the hotel has undergone
total renovation and rebranding. Located at
3994 Hinkleville Road, they feature an indoor pool and whirlpool with complimentary
milk and cookies nightly. The family-owned
company had their fourth generation granddaughters, Madeline and Kaylee McDowell, to
cut the ribbon. Kelm Davidson-Burchard is the
General Manager.
Holiday Inn Express
The Holiday Inn Express recently
held its grand opening and ribbon cutting. The hotel is a new
property with 85 rooms, 16 of
which are suites, and is located at
3996 Hinkleville Road. Featured
are an outdoor pool, fitness center, courtyard and complimentary
cookies and milk nightly. Cary
Allen is the general manager. During the ceremony, Dan Drury, president of Midamerica Corporation, stated that their investment in Paducah is not finished. Cutting the ribbon were fourthgeneration granddaughters Kaylee and Madeline McDowell.

the Paducah Bank commercial “This is Home” recently won seven Telly awards, a national television
advertising award. They are currently expanding and
renovating a new studio and office space on 28th
Street near MidTown.

The 2013 Membership and Total Resource Campaign ended in mid-September and was
a huge success. “Thank you to the many volunteers who helped to make this campaign so
great,” said Deborah Edmonds, Chair-elect of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce and
Chair of the Campaign. “We appreciate everyone’s support.”
While membership to the chamber is available throughout the year, a special campaign is traditionally held each fall with area business leaders helping to identify and recruit new members.
Full results of the campaign will be included in the November Chamber newsletter. New
members are being featured on the Chamber’s website, www.paducahchamber.org, or on the
Facebook page, Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently announced the retirement of District 1 Chief Engineer Jim LeFevre.
LeFevre worked on numerous projects, including the Cadiz Bypass, the Tennessee River Bridge
(U.S. 60), the Lakes Bridges Project to replace
both the Kentucky Lake Bridge and Lake Barkley
Bridge on U.S. 68 in Trigg and Marshall counties,
and, most notably, the emergency replacement
of a 322-foot span of the Eggners Ferry Bridge—a
project that was completed in just 121 days.

Price recently held a leadership position for the Department of Women’s Services at

Renovations to the Little Miracles Birthing
Center have been completed, thanks to funding
provided by Lourdes Foundation’s donors. Ten
private suites and three labor / delivery rooms
received new décor, wall finishes, renovated
bathrooms and upgraded fixtures to enhance the
experience of families as they welcome their new
baby.
Lourdes Foundation contributed $105,000 to
the upgrades, including more than $12,000 from
the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels and
a $51,000 grant from IMPACT Lourdes, a special
group of passionate, philanthropic women who

Patient Care Assistant of the Year. Glenda Hamilton, who
works in the PCU, won the award for 2013 Monitor Technician of the Year.

announced the appointment of Mardie
R. Herndon, Jr. as President and Chief
Operating Officer of The Paducah Bank
and Trust Company.
Herndon succeeds Wally Bateman, who
relinquished his day-to-day activities after
nearly 20 years as president of the bank.

Bateman will continue to serve as a director and officer of Paducah Bank.
An executive with more than 20 years of banking experience, Herndon served as President and CEO of SunTrust
Bank - Middle Georgia in Macon for five years and held
similar leadership positions in both Savannah and Americus, Georgia. He worked for Wachovia for more than 10
years prior to joining SunTrust in 2001.
Herndon, 44, earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from
Georgia Southern University.

Leadership Paducah
Class #27 Retreat

“You will have lifelong friends after this
experience. You will be bonded for life.”
These were some of the statements I heard
when learning about our Leadership Paducah retreat, our first event as Leadership
Paducah #27. Being the person I am I asked
a ton of questions, wanting to know every
detail of the weekend and what to expect,
and when I didn’t get the answers I wanted
this only intensified my need for information. I kept asking myself, how in the world
do they expect me to immediately bond with
30 other people, some of whom I’ve never
met or heard of before? But in fact, we had
already started bonding because none of us
really knew what to expect and this brought
us together, whether we realized it at the
time or not. Of course, we had heard rumors
of zip-lining, climbing telephone poles and
REALLY getting into each other’s personal
spaces; but it was like all past members of
Leadership Paducah were told to keep it a
secret and be as vague as possible. What
was the big secret and why weren’t we fully
informed of what we were getting ourselves
into that weekend? Turns out they actually
knew what was best by keeping us on our
toes.
When arriving at the Chamber office to
board the bus, I admit my attitude was not
in the right place. Thankfully, I realize when
this happens and I’ve learned how to adjust
it, and for this weekend I knew I had to be
in the right frame of mind with a positive
attitude. The first day consisted of gettingto-know-you activities. One game allowed
us to come up with our nicknames for the
weekend and considering we were outside
during an afternoon rain shower mine came
to be “Standing in the Rain”, which was later
shortened to SIR…something I didn’t mind
at all. Other activities made us communicate without speaking, work with our group
to accomplish a common goal and treasure
those valuable resources, whether they were
merely blocks of wood or a can of water. It’s
interesting looking back at how a tiny block
of wood can cause such a disruption and
throw you off your game but it’s even more
interesting looking at how our group overcame the obstacles and worked as one. To
me this was the entire point of this retreat,
to be thrown into an atypical situation and
work together to solve it. Even when a man
named “Too Tall” keeps throwing you curve
balls you have to take a deep breath, assess
the situation and come up with a game plan
to make it work and accomplish your goal.
The camp leaders were great at comparing
our obstacles to real life situations, making us realize that things don’t always go as
planned and sometimes things happen that
make life more difficult, and it’s up to us to
re-evaluate and move forward.
When I returned home, I was asked,
“What was the purpose of going two hours
away when they could’ve thrown you in
a room in Paducah to learn about each
other?” The answer is very simple: when
standing in a room with strangers, it can be
easy to slide to the back and not participate,

again open and the hub of business.

Leadership Paducah Class 27 has officially started. The class was selected this summer and
began their activities in late August. They held an opening session at the Commerce Center with
Jessica Toren of West Kentucky Community and Technical College leading them through some
introductory exercises. Matt Snow, Rachel English and Tim Straley, all members of Class #26,
assisted Jessica and also accompanied the class on their two-day opening retreat to Camp Mack
Morris Boy Scout Camp located near Camden, TN.

it’s easy to mill about and not really
get to know anyone. During this
retreat, that is impossible to do. You
are forced to be the center of attention whether by coming up with a
nickname for your group to remember, being a “cloud” that your group
hoists above their heads or hearing
words of encouragement while doing
something potentially out of your
comfort zone. I thoroughly enjoyed
this experience and everything I
learned, both about myself and my
fellow classmates. I find myself saying “SIR running” or “SIR going to
sleep” and I’m totally okay with that.
And with a smile on my face I say,
“Let the bonding begin.”
