Each year, our annual donor report is
a chance to reflect back on the impact
that you, our valued donors, have
enabled us to make on patient care
across our supported sites of Hamilton
Health Sciences, and to THANK YOU.
Through your support, you have clearly
demonstrated a high level of trust in our
ability to be held accountable for how
your contributions are spent. We are
honoured to have your trust.
George McCarter
Board Chair
Pearl F. Veenema, FAHP
President & CEO
Throughout this report we will take
you on a journey across the region
to share examples of how your
contributions are directly helping your
neighbours and friends. However,
before we embark on that journey, we
are pleased to announce that for the
fifth consecutive year, Hamilton Health
Sciences Foundation was honoured
to be recognized as one of 11 “Best
in Class” health care foundations
in Canada by the Association for
Healthcare Philanthropy. While this is
a point of tremendous pride for all of us
at The Foundation, it is a reflection on
our entire staff team’s commitment to
accountability to all of our donors and
the community at large, and the good
governance offered by our volunteer
Board of Directors.
This year has been tremendous: in
2014, we humbly announced several
transformational gifts.Overall, we raised
$22.9 million in donations and disbursed
$12.8 million to our supported sites of
Hamilton Health Sciences. This was only
possible because of the tremendous
support from ALL of our donors; it is
your collective impact that makes our
work possible.
As we move into 2015, we will be
refreshing our five-year strategic plan.
With this effort, there is an opportunity
for us to reflect back on all that you have
enabled us to achieve. Our plan included
four core directions and each has seen
measurable results. (1) Transforming
our Brand: We have significantly raised
the awareness and understanding
of The Foundation and its role, and
successfully implemented standards
around our two-tiered brand structure.
(2) Enhancing the Donor Experience:
The redevelopment of our website,
social media properties and overall
frequency and type of communications
with donors has been enhanced. (3)
Enhancing our Partnerships: We are
grateful for the numerous community
event holders who raise funds on our
behalf, and to other organizations such
as Canadian Cancer Society - Relay
for Life. The growth of the Care4
cause marketing program has also
supported this direction. (4) Optimizing
Events and Enhancing Organizational
Sustainability: The streamlining of our
event portfolio, reengineering numerous
internal processes and our success
with the Imagine Canada Standards
accreditation process were achieved.
As you read through the pages of this
report, we trust that you will take pride in
what your contributions have enabled.
The stories that we share are Your
Stories and they reflect the world-class
specialty medical care provided by
Your Hospital.
We welcome Brian Johnston from the
Hamilton Health Sciences Volunteer
Association and Kathy Thomas to our
board this year.
A Message from Hamilton
Health Sciences Board Chair,
Paul Chapin AND President and
CEO, Rob MacIsaac
As the regional specialty care provider for the full
spectrum of life’s journey, from prenatal to palliative
care, Hamilton Health Sciences is privileged to
provide care to a broad geographic region and the
extremely diverse patient population of south-central
Ontario. It is a tremendous responsibility and our
ability to live up to it is supported by your contributions
to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. Thank you
for that ongoing commitment and trust.
Our continuous need for financial support is a
reflection of the current realities of health care. There
is no government funding for medical equipment;
equipment that is essential to the provision of care
throughout our sites. The Foundation’s contribution
to our equipment needs, along with research,
redevelopment and the continuing education of our
teams is profoundly important and directly influences
the quality of care that we are able to provide each
and every day of the year.
We are extremely grateful to the thousands of
donors who support Hamilton Health Sciences
Foundation each year, as your contributions
enable us to provide the best care for all
those who rely on us from throughout
the region and beyond. As provincial
leaders in many specialty
programs, regardless of where
you live in the region, we are
proud to be Your Hospital.

The fight of his life
The #FIGHTRILEYFIGHT campaign kicked off with a massive one-day social media
blitz when Riley Dunda asked thousands of supporters to help him celebrate his
19th birthday. It was just five weeks after the Hamilton Red Wings player from
Grimsby suffered a massive stroke. This campaign was just one way that
the Dunda family wanted to show their appreciation to the team of highly
specialized interventional neuro-radiologists who saved Riley’s life by
restoring blood flow to his brain.
Grateful for the expert care, Riley and his family are determined
to make a difference for other patients by pledging to raise
$150,000 in support of the stroke interventional team at
Hamilton General Hospital. Providing care to more than
1,225 patients a year from across the region, Hamilton
General Hospital is the largest integrated stroke
program in Ontario.

Grateful cardiac patients
give gift of securities
Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation supports transformational care thanks to
your generous gifts. One of the many giving options is the donation of securities,
including stocks, bonds or mutual funds.
By doing so, you avoid paying capital gains tax on any increase in the stocks’
value and receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value.

improve blood flow to his heart. He donated securities toward construction of a
hybrid operating suite that will enable both minimally invasive surgeries and
traditional open surgeries.
Another grateful cardiac patient, Ron Redmond, was also inspired
to make a gift of securities. After Ron collapsed on his kitchen
floor, paramedics took him to The General where he was put
into a coma to protect his brain. He subsequently received
emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Ron is now enjoying
retirement with his wife, Linda, their two children and
three grandchildren.
“My husband was dead and now he is alive. I got
a second chance to be with him,” said Linda.
“The work they do at Hamilton General
Hospital is amazing and if a donation
could help someone else, I think that is
so important.”

such as sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic
injury and others.
The Chronic Pain Management Program operates
clinics at the Hamilton General Hospital and Chedoke
sites and offers interdisciplinary treatment of chronic pain
through a variety of methods including medical intervention,
cognitive therapy, nutrition, relaxation and horticulture therapy.

Foundation Staffer Goes
Bald for the Brain
The Bald for the Brain campaign launched when Heather Scott,
a Foundation employee, shaved her head in the days leading
up to her surgery for a brain tumour. The campaign exceeded its
goal by raising more than $5,750 toward the purchase of a Mayfield
pin headrest, specialized equipment that holds a patient’s head firmly in
place during delicate neurosurgery procedures.
Heather, a resident of Welland, is grateful for the only specialized neurological
care that is available in south-central Ontario. As both an employee and patient,
Heather was touched by the show of support that enabled the purchase of equipment
that will benefit other neurosurgery patients.
Foundation staff member and grateful
patient, Heather Scott, having her head
shaved in advance of her surgery.
Advanced equipment thanks to generous donors
As the regional centre for cardiac care and neurosciences, Hamilton General Hospital requires a
diverse range of equipment to deliver the most advanced procedures. Hamilton General Hospital
Foundation is fortunate to have community members and organizations assist in funding this
equipment, which is not funded by the government.
Grateful patient Ben Young donated funds to help purchase equipment designed for minimally
invasive cardiac surgery, including valve repairs, replacements and coronary artery bypass.
Minimally invasive surgery allows for smaller incisions, which leave smaller scars with less
trauma and bleeding. This enables a quicker recovery and is especially beneficial to vulnerable
patients, such as seniors.
Gentlemen’s Corner, a group of local men, arranged a Boys N Toys Charity Rally
featuring fine automobiles in June 2014. Proceeds went toward the purchase of an
ultrasound vascular transducer probe for the Cardiac Arrhythmia Unit.
The ultrasound vascular transducer probe is used daily in the unit to gain safe
access to veins and arteries to enable the recording of cardiac activity and
the insertion of catheters. The probe significantly reduces the time it
takes to find and safely access these vessels. This technology greatly
improves patient safety and helps teach important techniques
to trainees.

Grateful Patient makes
$5-million transformational gift
Having experienced high-quality care at Juravinski Hospital
and Cancer Centre, Ron Clark and his wife Nancy, of Caledonia,
announced a $5-million multi-year transformational gift to support many
critical needs across the site.
The Essentials for Excellence campaign in both the Hematology and Oncology
Inpatient Units was completed with this funding. This concluded the outfitting
of 90 patient rooms in these two units, which combined support more than
2,500 patients a year. Several apheresis machines were also purchased. For
patients with blood cancers, an apheresis machine is an essential component
of their treatment as it involves removing blood from the body and separating
its individual components so that one particular component, such as stem
cells, platelets or plasma can be collected for transplant while the remaining
blood is re-introduced into the bloodstream. In recognition of their tremendous
generosity, the Hematology Unit and Oncology Day Services have been named
in their honour.
Additional priority equipment purchased for the site included two NeoProbe
consoles, six wireless open hand pieces and two wireless laparoscopic hand
pieces, which together support enhanced care for patients undergoing
surgery for gynecological or breast related cancers. Further funding
allowed the MR Simulator installation and related renovations.
While making their generous gift, Ron and Nancy indicated that “it
is our wish that this gift inspires others with the means to support
the tremendous and talented teams at the Juravinski Hospital
and Cancer Centre.”
Relay Partnership
Grows in Second Year
More than $250,000 was raised through Relay For
Life Hamilton, enabling the Juravinski Hospital
and Cancer Centre Foundation to support the
necessary renovations to install an MR Simulator.
This technology enables better diagnosis and
treatment for patients because of its advanced
imaging capabilities. It also provides physicians
with better contrast and higher resolution images
of cancerous tumours, other tissues and organs,
enabling more precision in radiation treatment.
For the second consecutive year, the foundation
partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society to
host the event at which nearly 400 patients and
supporters participated, representing 38 Juravinski
Hospital and Cancer Centre teams. Thanks to the
outstanding efforts of participants and donors, we
exceeded our goal, raising $122,000, which was
then matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous
foundation donor.

Improved
Screening
For Bone
Marrow
Transplants
Juravinski Hospital and Cancer
Centre’s Bone Marrow Transplant
Program is one of the few adult programs
in Ontario, receiving referrals from hospitals
within and outside of our region. To keep up
with the growing need for life-saving bone marrow
transplants, two critical pieces of equipment have been
purchased, enabling faster and more accurate donor
matches for patients needing this procedure.
Investigating the DNA and tissues of potential donors
determines compatibility to patients. Previously capable of
isolating DNA from five donors at a time, the recently acquired DNA
Sequencers allow physicians at the lab to isolate DNA from 25 donors at
once. Working in conjunction with the sequencer, the new Luminex® 200™
System empowers staff to complete tissue typing of 12 samples in one day,
as opposed to the previous turnaround time of one week. The new equipment
ensures a faster screening process, resulting in more lives saved.
Arthroplasty Program Receives
Essential Support
In 2014, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre Foundation
launched the Essentials for Excellence campaign in support of
the Arthroplasty Program at the hospital. More than 1,800
joint replacements are performed each year by a team
of orthopedic surgeons specializing in hip and knee
arthroplasty. The campaign’s goal is to raise $500,000
to cover the cost of many items required to meet the
program’s immediate and future needs.
We are grateful for donor contributions, which
enabled the foundation to purchase some
of the essential equipment needed by
our specialists, including an incision
retractor, a power extractor and an
ultrasonic revision instrument,
all of which are used during
arthroplasty surgery.

Donors Enable
Dreams For a
new centre
With dreams that one day Isabella will be
able to “lead a fully functional life, living each
day with confidence,” mom Natalie is so excited
to learn that the Enabling Dreams Campaign in
support of the new McMaster Children’s Health Centre
achieved more than 90% of its $6.5-million campaign
goal. This tremendous accomplishment was largely the
result of three transformational gifts from organizations with
a long-standing history of supporting the health care needs of
Hamilton and surrounding region.
While many donors have been compelled to support this campaign,
it was the combined gifts of $3.25-million from the Chedoke Health
Foundation and $1-million gifts from both ArcelorMittal Dofasco and
the Hamilton District Society for Disabled Children that enabled
The Foundation to achieve this milestone.
Scheduled to open in fall 2015, the new Centre will be the first
of its kind in Canada to house this combination of inter-related
clinical programs, specifically: Autism Spectrum Disorder Service,
Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation Program, Child and
Youth Outpatient Mental Health Program, and the Prosthetics
and Orthotics Service. An integral part of McMaster Children’s
Hospital’s multi-site continuum of care, the new Centre was
purpose-built to meet the specialized needs of these children
and to provide a nurturing environment for families.

The Importance of Play
Rob Baboth and Dr. Peter Fitzgerald
enjoying the new playground.
Modern, fun and safe areas where children can play during
their hospital visits are a vital part of healing. With the support
of donors, patients at McMaster Children’s Hospital now have four
exciting new play spaces, including an indoor playroom and outdoor
play areas, divided into three unique environments: an interactive
playground, a serene space and an area for organized activities. The
spaces are central to the inpatient units on the third floor.
While hundreds of donors were involved in the funding for these projects,
John and Sabrina Melo of Golfi Concrete and Drain initiated the fundraising
drive and were the principal donors supporting the indoor playroom, which included
general updating along with new toys, specialized play stations and reading zones. The
outdoor play areas include giant checkerboards, a running track, and accessible musical
instruments all built on padded Astroturf that allows for easy rolling of IV poles and wheelchairs.
Through countless donors and participants, the outdoor playgrounds were primarily supported
by proceeds from the Dianne Baboth Memorial Golf Tournament.
Helping women have healthy pregnancies
The Foundation supports the Women’s Reproductive Health program at McMaster University
Medical Centre (MUMC). This program, which helps more than 7,500 patients annually,
includes prenatal testing, high-risk obstetrics and pre-conception counseling for women
with certain medical conditions.
Providing this essential care are specialists like Dr. Raymond Naden, who recently
joined MUMC from the Greater Auckland Integrated Health Network where he
was a specialist physician in obstetric medicine and clinical director.
Dr. Naden focuses on patients like Allison Raestan. The Waterloo
resident has postural orthostatic tachycardia, which means her heart
does not tolerate movement well and her blood pressure is not
stable. She delivered by C-section at 35 weeks after she began

How Doug Downie Inspired Me
“Simplify, simplify, simplify!” Doug
told me. These famous words written
by Henry David Thoreau may not look like
much when glanced at, but they burst with
meaning and inspiration. Just like Doug Downie.
Doug’s father was his biggest inspiration. He taught
Doug to be a doer, and not a thinker. He told me that this
has been helpful for him throughout his life, and I think it’s
true. Since he told me this, he has inspired me to also be a doer.
It has already been helping me, because I was always a thinker. I
thought so much, and said so little. It got me nowhere except wrapped
up in my own thoughts. The majority of the time, I would have an opinion
on everything, but I would never speak my mind. To be honest, I was afraid of
being wrong. Doug showed me that opinions are never wrong, and that having the
ability to speak bluntly is a great thing to have. I thought about what it would be like
to have that ability, so I started working towards it. I began to make change right away,
because why waste time?

St Peter’s Celebrates Grandparents day
St. Peter’s
Hospital
Patient Barbara
Smart is joined by
several generations
of her family to celebrate
Grandparents Day.
Patients and donors were the focus of two unique celebrations hosted by St. Peter’s Hospital
Foundation this year; the new Donor Wall unveiling took place in June, while the second
annual intergenerational celebration of Grandparents Day was held in September.
A number of longstanding donors were on hand for the Donor Wall unveiling. Each
spoke about the special place St. Peter’s Hospital holds in their hearts, many
referring to friends and family for whom the team at St. Peter’s provided care.
Keith McIntyre, a former Chair of St. Peter’s Fundraising Council who was
actively involved in the campaign to save St. Peter’s from closure during
the 1990s, reflected on its special place in the community. “For such a
small hospital, it has always occupied a large place in the heart of
our community.”
That community connection was on display during
Grandparents Day when patients and their families, staff
and members of the community were on hand to
enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of activities including
a BBQ, games, live music, visits from The
Hamilton Police Canine Unit and the Mount
Nemo Pony Club. Grandparents Day is a
chance for family and friends to enjoy
a visit, and for some it provides
a sense of quality family time.
Grandparents Day was

campaign commitment of $250,000 to purchase a CADCAM System, which will greatly
enhance the quality of life for patients in the Prosthetics and Orthotics Program.
This new technology includes an optical laser scanner and computer software that enables
clinicians to design and fabricate custom-made braces and limbs.
For patients like Margaret Barr, for whom precision fit was hard to achieve, this new CADCAM System
will be life-changing. When a cut from a shopping cart led to a life-threatening infection in Margaret’s
ankle, intravenous antibiotics failed to stop it. Surgeons at Hamilton General Hospital had to amputate
her left leg just below the knee. Margaret was fitted with a prosthesis and worked closely with the St. Peter’s
Hospital team to walk again six weeks later with a cane.
But it was a long, laborious process to complete her
permanent prosthesis, including multiple fittings, castings
and moldings. With the CADCAM, a scanning wand feeds
precision measurements right to a laptop, which sends the
information to the electronic carver to create the model.
“With the CADCAM system, we can provide quicker service
to patients by eliminating the need to take plaster casts,
make cast modifications or to wait for drying,” said Charles
McRae, Clinical Manager, Prosthetics and Orthotics.
“With more accurate digital measurements and images, the
CADCAM is a powerful tool to help improve the fit of the
patient’s device, which means superior comfort and function.”

The late
Dr. Jane Gillett.
Dr. Jane Gillett was passionate about
helping people.
She was medical director of the Acquired
Brain Injury (ABI) Program at Hamilton
Health Sciences until her death in 2011 from
endometrial cancer. Her care model for pediatric
patients, which was child and family-centred and
stressed re-integrating children into their communities,
was duplicated in many countries. She was also known for
going the extra mile, including paying for medications if a patient
had no money or drug plan.
To honour Dr. Gillett, her parents, Ruth and Jack, have donated
$25,000 to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation to train a visiting fellow
from a developing nation. The six-month term will allow the visiting fellow to
contribute to Hamilton Health Sciences while gaining experience in the treatment
of ABI. This is especially beneficial, as there is a shortage of ABI training in many
developing nations.
Dr. Gillett earned a Master’s in speech pathology from the University of Toronto and
worked with stroke and traumatic brain injury patients. In 1984, she graduated from the
university’s medical school and later became a neurologist. In 2001, Dr. Gillett came to Hamilton
to take on the director position and was dedicated to the most profoundly injured patients.
This generous gift enables Dr. Gillett’s legacy to live on through the work of the fellowship recipient.
“Jane was a wonderful clinician,” said Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Chief of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. “She practiced medicine with a commitment to a holistic approach. Her legacy continues in the
work of the Hamilton Health Sciences Acquired Brain Injury team.”

Study takes steps
toward slowing
down frailty
Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation
supported a post-doctoral fellow carrying
out a frailty assessment study at the Geriatric
Education and Research in Aging Sciences
Centre (GERAS). The study was aimed at
enhancing optimal aging.
Since slow gait speed and poor lower body strength
can lead to further illness and loss of independence, PostDoctoral Fellow Janet Pritchard and her team explored novel
ways to slow down frailty. Researchers assessed frailty in more
than 150 patients and results of the study were presented at the 2013
and 2014 Canadian Association of Gerontology meetings.
Another of Dr. Pritchard’s projects assessed intramuscular fat, which is fat
inside of the muscle groups. The study found that women with type 2 diabetes
have a greater amount of fat in their leg muscles, possibly resulting in
greater difficulty walking and a higher risk of falls.
The Foundation is pleased to have been able to support
Dr. Pritchard’s important work in these critical areas of study.

The foundation For
Tomorrow’s Care
Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is proud
to support a diverse range of research initiatives
throughout the year, including the funding of seven
academic research chairs, fellowships and grants for
research studies and clinical trials.
Today’s advances in medical care are built upon a long legacy of
research; investments that were made in years past are influencing the
quality of care that patients receive today. For a sense of the short-term
impact of our research funding, we provide an update on the projects featured
at our 2014 gala:
• With The Foundation’s support, the McMaster Pediatric Surgery Research
Collaborative was able to hire a full-time research assistant for pediatric surgery and
a full-time research coordinator to oversee the collective activities of the Collaborative.
According to Dr. Luis Braga, “these valuable additions have enabled our first collaborative
project to study the efficacy of Interactive Tablet Distractions in reducing perioperative anxiety
for pediatric patients surrounding surgical procedures in the specialties of urology, surgery and
ophthalmology.”
• Dr. Rosalyn Juergens sums up the impact of Foundation support on cancer research, “Lung cancer is
no longer one disease. Molecular testing can define numerous different subtypes of lung cancer. This
information helps select more personalized treatment options for patients. These funds will provide
the Lung Cancer Disease Site Team with the ability to pilot the newest technologies which
identify these molecular subtypes. We will be one of the first cancer centres in the province
Hamiltonian Sean Jones
to use next generation platform testing as part of our routine evaluation for lung cancer.
entertains guests at
These funds are keeping Hamilton at the cutting edge in oncology.”
2014 Gala.
• The GERAS team’s efforts have been focused in three key areas: Frailty, Falls
and Fractures, Dementia and Delirium, and End of Life Care and our many
educational activities have been aimed at moving research into practice,”
says Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou. “Foundation funding has supported a
number of scientists in Frailty, Falls and Fracture research, including
a longitudinal study of older Canadians (aMos) which identified that
frailty was reversible and could improve regardless of age.”
• The HIP ATTACK Trial will provide us with the opportunity to
understand, and to clearly answer the question of whether
accelerated access to surgery compared to standard care
for hip fracture patients will improve post-operative
outcomes and quality of life. “Ultimately, the funding
will be crucial to supporting our recruitment
goal of 1,200 patients internationally by June
2016,” says Dr. P.J. Devereaux.

Dr. William James Deadman, Pathologist
and Bacteriologist, Hamilton General
Hospital circa 1947.
An Endowment for
the Future
Dr. John Deadman and Beatrice Deadman have made a
one-time gift in addition to establishing a permanent fund to
honour John’s father, Dr. William James Deadman.
The Dr. William James Deadman Endowment Fund will pay tribute
to Dr. Deadman, who established the largest forensic medicine lab
outside of a university teaching centre at The General and served as its
pathologist from 1919 until 1956.
The endowed fund has a goal of $100,000 and will support continuing
education and training for students, fellows and clinicians in the pathology
program. It also helps Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation in our goal of doubling
our existing system-wide endowment to at least $20 million by 2020. At the end of 2014,
we were at nearly $13.4-million or 67% of our goal.
Our 20 by 20 Endowment Campaign was launched in 2012 to ensure our long-term ability to
provide essential support for patient care, equipment and research. Endowed funds are crucial
for The Foundation as a way to provide a sustainable revenue source regardless of the
economic climate.
The gift of an endowment is a donation that will truly serve patients and families for
generations and leaves a lasting legacy.
Legacy Gifts Keep on Giving
Even when he fell ill, Tim Conroy, the humble founder of the multi-national
organization KUBRA, firmly believed in the spirit of philanthropy. In 2007,
Tim was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Under the care of
Dr. Graeme Fraser, Tim was treated at Juravinski Hospital and
Cancer Centre.
Sadly, Tim passed away in December 2013 at the age of 53.
Tim lived his life by “paying it forward” to those in need, and
as a testament to his generosity and in appreciation for
the high quality of care he received, Tim left an initial
bequest gift for $1-million to Juravinski Hospital and
Cancer Centre Foundation. In recognition of Tim’s
remarkable gift, the Intensive Care Unit at the
hospital will be named in his honour. Tim
will be missed by the patients and staff at
Juravinski Hospital, but his generosity
will live on for generations.
The late Tim Conroy paid it forward with
a sizable bequest gift.

In 2003, Dianne B. began
experiencing excruciating
headaches. After visiting several
doctors and not finding a solution,
Dianne’s optometrist referred her to a
specialist in Niagara who discovered that she
had a benign tumour behind her right eye. After
her diagnosis, Dianne was sent to Juravinski Cancer
Centre, where, under the excellent care of Dr. William
McMillan, Radiation Oncologist, she underwent radiation
therapy, which successfully shrunk the tumour.
Grateful for the care she received, the Niagara Falls resident
Dr. William McMillan’s
care inspired Dianne to

Although she believes her contributions are modest, Dianne feels her
donations, along with those of others, can make a big difference.
“A lot of people need support and quality care,” says Dianne. “I hope I can
inspire people to consider giving a donation.”

Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation is deeply saddened by the loss of long-time
friend and supporter, Murray Hogarth.
The founder of Pioneer Energy and executive chair and CEO of The Pioneer
Group Inc., Murray grew up in Napanee, Ontario and graduated from Queen’s
University. He opened the first Pioneer gas station in Hamilton in 1956. Now
with more than 400 gas stations, Pioneer is Canada’s largest private
independent retail gas station chain.
While Murray was an outstanding businessman, he was also
extremely passionate about giving back to his community. We
are grateful for Murray and his family’s long-standing support
of McMaster Children’s Hospital and Hamilton Health
Sciences Foundation.
The Hogarth Family and Pioneer Energy
Ophthalmology Centre was constructed and
equipped with a $1-million donation from the
Hogarth family and with contributions from
Pioneer’s Give What You Can campaign.
This is just one example of the
tremendous support from Murray, his
family and Pioneer Energy. Murray
will be missed, but he has left a
lasting legacy to those who
were fortunate enough to
have known him.
The Donor All-Star Team Event
On October 9, Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation was pleased to
welcome donors to our “All-Star Team” donor appreciation event.
More than 120 individuals came out to hear patient Stephanie
McManus captivate donors as she recounted how her life
had been saved three times at the various Hamilton Health
Sciences sites. Her inspirational story resonated with
many donors in the room. Those in attendance were
also able to hear Dr. Salim Yusuf, Chief Scientist,
as he recounted the many advancements in
medical treatment that have been pioneered
at Hamilton Health Sciences as a result
of medical research. In 2014, Hamilton
Health Sciences was recognized
as one of the 25 most influential
research communities in the

New Walkers Help Get Patients Back on Their Feet
Bump, Set, Raise! That’s what happens when
you mix FUSE and beach volleyball. The winners
are patients receiving post-surgical care following
a total joint replacement procedure, specifically
those on ward E2 at Juravinski Hospital.
Essential to the recuperation of all orthopedic
patients, 50 “4-point walkers” were purchased
with the $2,500 raised from this exciting event.
While seemingly a basic piece of equipment,
these walkers are crucial to enabling a safe
recovery for patients.
FUSE is a group of young professionals
dedicated to promoting philanthropic involvement
and volunteer leadership in support of the
Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation through
fundraising and networking. They host events
throughout the year in their passion to support
the critical needs of our sites.

support of Hamilton General Hospital’s Burn Unit through
several fundraisers, by matching $1 for every coat donated to the
Hamilton Back Clinic Winter Coat Drive and constructing a “Giving Tree”
where customers and employees purchased leaves, flowers and birds to
place on the branches.
B. On November 1, 15 cancer survivors and nearly 400 members of Hamilton’s
Portuguese community gathered for the inaugural “Angariaccio De Fundos Para A
Luta Contro O Cancro” dinner-dance in support of Juravinski Cancer Centre. With
special guest and Canadian Idol winner Brian Melo in attendance, the event united
local businesses and individuals in their fight against cancer.
C. In memory of his mother who passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital, Luke
Fillion walked from Hamilton to the CN Tower on May 2, raising nearly
$2,000 toward the purchase of a pressure mapping system at the site.
D. The Thompson family continued to fundraise for McMaster

How Doug Downie
Inspired Me
“Simplify, simplify, simplify!” Doug
told me. These famous words written
by Henry David Thoreau may not look
like much when glanced at, but they burst
with meaning and inspiration. Just like Doug
An Essay by
Downie.
Holly Dear
Doug’s father was his biggest inspiration. He taught
Doug to be a doer, and not a thinker. He told me that
this has been helpful for him throughout his life, and I think
it’s true. Since he told me this, he has inspired me to also be
a doer. It has already been helping me, because I was always
a thinker. I thought so much, and said so little. It got me nowhere
except wrapped up in my own thoughts. The majority of the time, I
would have an opinion on everything, but I would never speak my mind.
To be honest, I was afraid of being wrong. Doug showed me that opinions
are never wrong, and that having the ability to speak bluntly is a great thing to
have. I thought about what it would be like to have that ability, so I started working
towards it. I began to make change right away, because why waste time?
Doug also taught me to make changes when necessary. He had always wanted
to be a famous actor. He started to take theatre classes, and at the time, he thought
he was chasing his dreams. Little did he know, it was nothing like he expected. He
dropped the classes, because he wasn’t about to study something he didn’t enjoy, and
be unhappy. This taught me to change my mind whenever I feel it’s necessary, and not
to stick with something you don’t like because you think it’s too late to change your mind.
It’s never too late to figure out what you love, and what’s right for you. Life is too short to
waste time being unhappy.
Doug was an advanced student. This man always had that extra touch of wisdom and
knowledge that makes you happy. He didn’t slack, because he was a great student, and
he wanted to maintain his marks and not let them fall. Being that this year is my first,
and sadly last year at Adelaide Hoodless, I could have decided to act, however I wanted
to, because at first, nobody knew me or my past. At the three other schools I’ve been
to, I’ve decided to keep myself the same. I didn’t fall into the wrong crowds, and I have
maintained my marks at a great stance, and ascending pace. I feel like now, it’s really
paid off to have a positive attitude about education, because even though you can have
your own opinion on school, you still get the work. What you choose to think of it, is up
to you, and only you. In my opinion, the better your thoughts are on school, classwork,
and education, the less of a drag learning becomes. You start to think of it as an
opportunity, and not a task.
I asked Doug that besides education and all, “What advice do you wish to give
me for a great life?” His answer was simply, “Take it slow, if you go too fast in
life, you can get really hurt”. You can choose to rush through life, or to take
your time. I know that for sure, I’m taking my time.
Thank you Doug Downie, for inspiring me so much. It has been
such a great opportunity for me to interview you. I will try my best
to hand down this inspiration, and make you proud.

Our Creed
Health Care, Transformed
Each dawn brings into our world a new mosaic of people, patients, staff, and critical needs. Needs for
funding to support patient care, medical equipment, specialized programs, education and research. It is a
unique blend of needs that inspires us to do our very best.
While we are a mosaic, each one of us unique in our skills and talents, we are united in our desire to make
a difference as we bring our own passion and commitment to our roles. It is our desire to inspire those
we encounter on our daily journey to join with us, as we raise funds to support our region’s health and
well-being.
We seek to inspire by telling the stories of our patients and our staff. They are the friends, families and
loved ones of people who rely on the care we support. It is their stories that have the power to influence
and transform an idea or thought into a gift.
Gifts come in many forms, each has its own unique value and role in supporting our Foundation. We
remain focused on inspiring the confidence of the community as their charity of choice. A charity that
welcomes all contributions great and small that will provide for the needs of our hospitals. A contribution
that enables each hospital in our family to have the equipment and environment that enables caring and
compassionate health care.
An environment, where through funding for world-leading research, the next treatment, cause or
cure can be found. Each day we remain focused on those who can help us to transform a life.
The life of today’s patient or tomorrow’s.
Together, we are united as we commit to our goal of achieving health care, transformed.
