Transit Oriented Development & Economic Growth WIKI: A transit-oriented development (TOD) is a mixed-use residential and commercial area designed to maximize access to public transport, and often incorporates features to encourage transit ridership. A TOD neighborhood typically has a center with a transit station or stop (train station, metro station, tram stop, or bus stop), surrounded by relatively high-density development with progressively lower-density development spreading outward from the center. TODs generally are located within a radius of onequarter to one-half mile (400 to 800 m) from a transit stop, as this is considered to be an appropriate scale for pedestrians, thus solving the last mile problem. In Hampton Roads, we have lots of opportunities with various forms of surface transportation intended to reduce the amount congestion on our roads, bridges and tunnels. People (with a focus on the younger generations) will often times look to live, work and play near public transportation connectivity exists. Virginia Beach is now looking at light rail (TIDE) coming to Town Center as are other cities (Norfolk and Chesapeake) evaluating TIDE extensions as well. With all this in mind, ULI would like to announce an event scheduled for April 2nd 2015, in partnership with the City of Virginia Beach and TBD (other sponsors). The location will be in the Miller Studio Theatre, Sandler Center, Virginia Beach Town Center. The event will run from 3-5pm, with a social and network event from 5-6pm. Event Hosts 1) City of Virginia Beach 2) TBD 3) TBD The content of the program will be an interactive panel discussion with Marilee Utter (Urban Land Institute), Ray Amoruso (Hampton Roads Transit), and representatives from Urban Design Associates, thus far.
