Annual Report_2014 1 - Hanna Perkins Center for Child

2014
ANNUAL
REPORT
Hanna Perkins Center
for Child Development
Dear Friends,
What a year it was for The Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development. Your
contributions of energy, ability and financial support were invaluable to our
organization as Hanna Perkins underwent a wonderfully transformational year.
The Hanna Perkins Board of Directors approved the organization’s new strategic plan
in January 2014. The plan includes a new mission and vision statements, core values,
balanced scorecard and goals, strategies and metrics all of which align with the newly
revised mission of the organization.
In January 2014 the American Psychoanalytic Association approved a collaborative
child psychoanalytic training program between Hanna Perkins Center and The
Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center. Both organizations worked tirelessly on program
curriculum, governance and administration. The program’s first training class began
in September 2014.
The Spotlight on Our Stars benefit in April 2014 raised over $290,000+. The event
honored Debby and Zack Paris with the Hadden Award.
After overcoming several years of financial challenge, Hanna Perkins ended its fiscal
year in June 2014 with a balanced budget.
While we are pleased to share this Annual Report with you and review the highlights
of this past year, we optimistically look to the coming year and the many opportunities we will have to serve the emotional well-being of children and their families.
Thank you for your commitment to The Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development.
You made a difference here this year. With your ongoing support we will continue to
change the lives of the children and families we serve.
With gratitude,
Susan Y. Meisel

Recipients of the 2014 Hadden Award
Debby and Zack Paris, long-time friends and passionate supporters of
the Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development, share a love of helping others. Zack, who recently retired from Jones Day after more than
30 years as a partner with the firm, is now an adjunct faculty member
at John Carroll University, where he is teaching an upper-level political
science course on the founding and development of the American
Constitutional System. Zack first joined the Hanna Perkins Board
in 1991 and served as board president from 2000-2004. His vision
and countless hours of determination led the organization through
its transition to its current Malvern Road location. Debby is a Hanna
Perkins-trained child analyst and clinic associate with her own practice
as a psychoanalyst. She also has served as a member of the Hanna
Perkins training faculty. They are proud parents of Jeremy (Katie) and
Norman (Jackie) and grandparents of 2 ½ year-old Anika and newborn
Lincoln.
Debby and Zack Paris
The Hadden Award honors the passionate commitment of Lainie and
Dr. John Hadden, whose inspired dedication to Hanna Perkins has
enhanced the mission of our Center in countless ways.

Eleanor Weisberger Weintraub
Originally Appeared in The Plain Dealer; July 22, 2014
Eleanor Weisberger Weintraub, a longtime friend, colleague and member of the first
Hanna Perkins Center training class, passed away on July 21, 2014 at the age of 94. Weintraub
worked for years in the division of child psychiatry at University Hospitals and served as an
assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University, where she taught medical students and
residents.
Along with several scholarly articles, Weintraub wrote books about the needs of children and
giving advice to parents. According to her family, Weintraub also taught an undergraduate course with Dr. Benjamin Spock, who wrote the introduction to her first book. She was a regular
guest on local television and radio, including the Mike Douglas show and the Morning Exchange
with Fred Griffith.
She also appeared several times in The Plain Dealer discussing issues such as how parents can
help children deal with upsetting news and the effects of being on their own.
Her book Letters from Nin is a novel about a young mother that doubles as a guide to young parents. Your Young Child and You: How to
manage growing up problems in the years from one to five.
“The story is the mother’s development,” she told The Plain Dealer in 2001. “It offers support for mothers who do it ‘the right way,’ which
she defines as spending a minimum of two years as a full-time mother. “We’re living longer. What’s five years to give to a couple kids?”
A native of Cleveland, Weintraub attended the former Fenn College, graduated from Ohio State University and received her master’s
degree in social work at Western Reserve University’s School of Applied Social Sciences. She was trained in child psychoanalysis in the first
class of trainees at The Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development in Shaker Heights.
Mrs. Weintraub was first married to Dr. Austin Weisberger, chairman of the Department of Medicine at CWRU until his death in 1970. Her
second marriage to Dr. David Weintraub, a neonatologist and long time family friend, lasted 31 years. She is survived by three daughters,
Susan Ratner (James), Betsy Seifert (Julian), and Debby Paris (Zack); two step-children, Jane Weintraub and Peter Enav; eight grandsons
and seven great-grandchildren.

Mission
Early childhood experiences shape a person’s entire life. To foster the emotional well-being of children and their families and to help them
master life’s challenges, The Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development promotes positive early learning experiences through educational
and therapeutic services for children and parents; training and support for professionals;
and community-wide collaborations.
Vision
A world where every child is listened to, understood and helped.
Programs and Services
Hanna Perkins School offers parent-toddler, pre-school and kindergarten programs. What makes the school special is our focus on helping
children understand and manage their everyday feelings. Parents appreciate how the school helps them to understand and deal with their
children’s behavior. Some parents choose Hanna Perkins simply because they want their child to get the best possible start in life. Others
may choose Hanna Perkins because their child is shy, has melt-downs, difficulty separating, or other such common concerns that may get
in the way of learning. Their experience at Hanna Perkins School not only prepares children to go on to elementary school with solid
pre-reading, writing and math skills, but also teaches children to know and express their feelings in age-appropriate ways. Our classrooms
feature a high ratio of specially-trained teachers to children, as well as coaching and support for families.
The Hadden Clinic focuses on in-depth treatment for children ages 3 through adolescence. Its work offers transformative psychotherapy,
psychoanalysis and guidance for children, adolescents and parents. This contrasts with treatments that rely solely on medications which, as a
policy, we do not prescribe. Parents of children receiving help at Hanna Perkins are part of the team, thinking together with a therapist, and
applying the understanding that has been gained at home and in other social environments.
Community Engagement includes Hanna Perkins’ therapists and teachers conducting workshops, symposia and consultations for early
childhood educators, child care providers, counselors, psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, and other professionals working with
young children and their families. These programs address the developmental needs of children and assist participants in understanding what
children are communicating through their behaviors and how they--as professionals--can use this understanding in helping children grow.
The Child Psychoanalytic Training Program is a unique program of local and distance learning for future child psychoanalysts. Clinic trainees
are post-graduate students pursuing advanced study in child and adolescent emotional development.
