HANOVER AREA COUNCIL OF CHURCHES ONE BODY • ONE SPIRIT P.O. Box 1561 136 Carlisle St. Hanover, PA 17331 717-633-6353 FAX: 717-633-6219 COUNCIL NEWS APRIL 2015 www.hanoverareacouncilofchurches.org From the desk of Carol Hinkle (HACC Director) From the desk of Nancy Werner (Council President) As I was preparing my article for this month’s newsletter it was brought to my attention that there seems to be some misinformation in the community regarding the future of the Hanover Area Council of Churches. The Number One thing to know is that we are NOT moving any of our ministries from their current locations. Number Two is that we are NOT eliminating ANY of our Ministries; in fact the exact opposite is true. We are actually expanding some of the ministries we have been operating. We have just added a bilingual caseworker who is available during the day as well as to our shelter clients on Tuesdays (8AM-4PM), Thursday evenings, and Fridays (8AM-4PM). Jillian is fluent in Spanish and will assist with computer skills, resumés and job applications. She will also help those who need guidance through various assistance programs as well as assisting in other areas. Our Community Health Ministry is expanding. We will now be able to provide two evenings a month to our Medical Clinic schedule. Along with the first and third Tuesday mornings from 10:30 AM until Noon we will be open the second and fourth Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00PM. Our Diabetes Education and Support Group will now meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month starting at Noon until 1PM. Our clinics are open to those who are uninsured or under-insured. Our Diabetes Education/Support Group is open to anyone in need. We are also looking for ways to contribute to the general good health of the community starting with gardening. This program will also be expanding as we seek community partners. Included in this newsletter is a copy of our brochure. In it you will find all the ministries we oversee as well as those we collaborate with other groups. As we look to continue being I do not remember her name, yet I remember her love and devotion. I am still able to picture this woman sitting in the pew with a few canning jars at her side. Her love and devotion surprised and touched me deeply. So in my memory she will always be the “butterfly lady.” Each canning jar was a temporary home for a Monarch caterpillar chrysalis. The butterfly lady knew the emergence of each Monarch butterfly was near. “Timing the release from these temporary homes is key,” she informed me that Sunday morning. She would not leave any chrysalis at home nor would she miss worship. So there she sat with a few canning jars at her side. The butterfly lady loved the Monarch caterpillars and the Monarch butterflies. Did she love one stage of the butterfly’s life more than the other? I do not know. However she was committed to care for each caterpillar during its chrysalis stage until it became a butterfly. A sentence in a recent Bible study sparked my memory of the butterfly lady and her canning jars. “The One who is Resurrection and Life works on both sides of the grave.”1 The chrysalis and the grave, a comparison often made. This image of dying and rising is so central to our understanding of Easter for Jesus and for us, his followers. Jesus promises, and we trust his promise, to be with us each day of our lives. We trust his Continued on page 4 Continued on page 4 1 Weekly Prayer Requests Each week we ask you to take a moment and say a prayer for one of our important ministries. Since we have been able to offer actual medical services (midAugust) Dr. Shute has seen 113 patients for both vital signs and office visits. Our Thursday evening clinics (starting in April) will be done by Dr. Charles Kovalchick. We welcome him and thank him for this valuable donation of his professional services. Clothing Bank Seeking New Coordinator It is with very mixed emotions that I announce the resignation of Mary Ellen Pennewill as the chairperson of our Clothing Bank. We are sorry to see her leave this position, but we totally understand the need for it. We wish Mary Ellen a full and speedy recovery and thank her for eleven years of faithful leadership in the Clothing Bank. We will certainly miss her and the tireless devotion of her service. We ask that you keep Mary Ellen in prayer. We are seeking someone to step up and lead this worthy ministry. Actually co-chairs might also be an option. Division of labor always makes the work easier. If this is something you wish to examine see us in the office for a job description. We accept Clothing Bank donations Monday-Saturday between 8 am—12:30 pm or by appointment. Call 633-6353 to schedule a drop-off time. Thank you for your support! 2 SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY In a continuing feature for our Newsletter we will highlight a ministry from a volunteers’ experience. It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do! Stote Scholarship Fund The Stolte Scholarship Fund was established in 1974 in memory of the Rev. Robert H. Stolte, pastor of Lohr's Memorial United Methodist Church in Hanover from 1963 to 1973. Because of Reverend Stolte's dedication to youth ministry, a scholarship fund (providing a one-time grant of $500) was administered to support college and seminary students studying for the ministry or other church-related vocations. The Fund also honors his wife, Jean K. Stolte, and his son, Drew C. Stolte, who was a Treatment Supervisor at The York County Prison. Scholarship applicants must be high school seniors, college students, or seminary students; residents of the Greater Hanover area; active in their congregation and of good moral character and scholastic ability. Scholarships applicants are required to complete an application form, submit an essay, and be available for an interview with the scholarship committee. In 2014 six applications were received. What a blessing it was to see the devotion and call to serve the Lord shown by each of these applicants! The committee was pleased to select Aaron Smith as the recipient of the 2014 Stolte Scholarship. A 2010 graduate of New Oxford High School, Aaron plans to graduate from Moody Bible Institute in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biblical Studies. He then plans to attend seminary to pursue a Master's of Divinity Degree with the hope of becoming a professor of Biblical Studies at the undergraduate level. The deadline for applications this year is May 1, 2015. Application forms can be obtained from local high school guidance offices, local church offices, and at the Hanover Area Council of Churches office. The offering taken at our Good Friday Service on April 3 will go toward the Stolte Scholarship Fund. Before I close I do wish to thank the Rotary Club of Hanover for the wonderful experience of the First Annual TasteFest which chose our Ruth’s Harvest Ministry as the beneficiary. Congratulations Rotary for a job well done! commitment even as we take the last breath of our earthly lives and the first breath of our eternal lives. If the actions of the butterfly lady, simply a follower of Jesus, display such love and devotion, imagine the depth, height, length, and width of Jesus’ love and devotion. Happy Easter! Healthy Hanover Community Garden Will you, your organization, or your congregation help with a community garden? The Greater Hanover Healthcare Committee, a task force of the Community Needs Committee of the Hanover Area Council of Churches, is looking at a program to improve the overall health of the greater Hanover community. A logical first step in this endeavor is to establish a community vegetable garden. What is a community garden? A community garden is a piece of land shared by the community to grow vegetables. What benefits would we gain from having a community garden? Garden plots would be offered to members of the community. A common use garden area would be established to specifically teach gardening techniques and provide produce for the Provide-a-Lunch program and local food banks. There would be the opportunity for positive social interaction between master gardeners, the gardeners, the helpers, and the people living in the garden neighborhood. A supervised gardening and nutrition program could be established. This will be especially important for youth activities but applies to all ages. The opportunity to grow and donate food to the Provide-a-Lunch and local food banks would be provided. Food preparation and cooking of home grown vegetables can be taught. This will establish a gardening educational landmark in the Hanover community. Volunteers are needed to serve on the garden committee, help manage the garden program, teach gardening, work in the common areas of the garden, create a community garden procedure guide, and mentor those who are new to gardening or the youth who are interested in learning to garden. We also need to know who is interested in gardening in a personal community plot. If you and/or your organization/congregation are interested in getting involved please complete and submit the lower form. If you have questions, please contact the Hanover Area Council of Churches at (717)633-6353 or email Carol Jo Hinkle at [email protected]. Please complete and mail or email to the Hanover Area Council of Churches, 136 Carlisle Street, Hanover, PA 17331, email: [email protected]. Responses are requested by April 10th, late responses will be accepted. _____Yes, I (we) want to volunteer for the Healthy Hanover Community Garden. Black Rock Church of the Brethren HOLY WEEK Events Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Black Rock Church of the Brethren invites you to join us on Thursday, April 2, at 7:00 pm for a Tenebrae (tehn’uhbray), or “Service of Shadows,” as we share scripture and sing hymns focusing on the suffering and death of Jesus. Including a ritual hand-washing, communion, and anointing, the service recreates the deep sense of loss felt by the first disciples so that we can more fully receive the joy of the resurrection on Easter morning. (Black Rock Church is located at 3864 Glenville Rd, Glenville PA. For more information or directions call 637-6170 or go to www.blackrockchurch.org.) EASTER—April 5 7:00 am SonRise Service (at Chestnut Grove Meetinghouse) Black Rock Church of the Brethren invites you to join us on Easter Sunday, April 5, at 7:00 am, as we gather at the historic Chestnut Grove Meetinghouse to remember the Easter story in scripture and song. The service culminates with a “Flowering of the Cross” symbolizing our change from death into life through Christ’s resurrection. Please bring fresh flowers to transform the plain wooden cross into a beautiful centerpiece for our Easter worship.
