Assistance League Huntington Beach by Diane Dwyer Advocates for the Homeless Lead by Huntington Harbour resident Ralph Bauer, the Huntington Beach Homeless Collaborative, made up of approximately 30 organizations including Assistance League® Huntington Beach, is taking action to address the homeless issue in our community. The Assistance League Huntington Beach’s mission is to improve the quality of life for children and adults in the communities of Huntington Beach, Fountains Valley and Westminster and for nearly a year have been collaborating with the groups to share resources, avoid duplication, and develop a more comprehensive user friendly homeless resource document for referrals. Assistance League Huntington Beach Operation New Beginnings program takes referrals all twelve months of the year from nine different agencies in our community who are listed as homeless providers. In addition to Operation New Beginnings, the DreamCatchers and the Assisteens® Auxiliaries, along with the Thrift Shop committee, also have programs to help homeless issues. After a tour of Interval House, one of our partnering agencies, Operation New Beginnings Chairman Jacki Jones wrote in a report to the Assistance League® Board. “It was fascinating to learn about how they meet the needs of their clients and how diverse the clientele is.” The difficult issue of housing is a reality and for most homeless, there is no solution in sight. Volunteers have been so touched by their experiences providing basics for families living in cars and in a number of less fortunate circumstances, that these caring and committed ladies feel a calling to help address our City’s homeless with Human Dignity and Compassion. Because of the addition of several new partner agencies, the number of referrals to Assistance League Huntington Advertise in the HARBOUR LIGHT For advertising rates, visit www.harbourlightmagazine.com If you wish to advertise in the magazine, phone us at (714) 840-0995 or e-mail [email protected]. 5 Beach between June and the end of 2014 exceeded last year’s referrals. In order to cover the increase in clients, Chairman Jackie Jones requested the Board take action and call a vote of the chapter membership to approve additional funds to the current budget. The Huntington Beach Homeless Collaborative has stated that one on one mentoring, along with temporary housing and transportation in the form of bus passes, as well as storage for personal items are now tops on the list of needs. The Collaborative feels strongly that feeding, clothing and bathroom accessibility although necessary, such services are not enough and such alone may well sustain the homeless life style. There must be a system in place whose resources will encourage a change in homeless behavior. If you would like to know more about the Huntington Beach Homeless Collaborative, contact Ralph Bauer. Huntington Harbour Art Association by Jackie Dvorman Quilt Exhibit, Bottom Row: Dorothy Johnson, Donna Vogel, Carol Persons, Marcene Galli – Back Row: Pam Smart, Ginny Eide, Karen Peoples, Linda Stevens, Lieelle Kennedy, Kathleen Moore, Marsha Hendler, Dottie Reed. Dorothy Johnson guided Needles and Friends members through the Museo in Anaheim viewing historical quilts. The idea of antique quilts may seem quiet and quaint, but instead there was an explosion of color on the walls facing the group. Needles and Friends includes may members who have created and designed marvelous quilts they have gifted to their families and have won many prizes in competitions. Luncheon followed at the Anaheim Packing District where groups chose among different booths. Marsha Hendler, Linda Stephens, Dottie Reed and Pam Smart chose their sandwiches from the Butcher Shop. The long table was filled with family treasures brought in by members to be displayed and evaluated by Valeria Bates, Estate Appraiser, at the winter luncheon held at the Old Ranch Country Club. Mrs. Bates gave entertaining and professional assessments of the items much as they do on “Antiques Road Caffe Gazelle COCKTAIL AND WINE BAR Delicious Italian Food In A Neighborhood Restaurant With Excellent Pricing Corner of Edinger & Bolsa Chica in Seagate Plaza 16041 Bolsa Chica, Huntington Beach (714) 846-2694 8 Show”. Betty Viers brought an antique pearl and old stick pin belonging to her husband’s great grandfather. She also brought a Buffalo Horn ashtray from her great grandmother that interested the appraiser very much. Mrs. Bates also recognized a painting brought in by a member as being a fine example of 19th Century landscape painting from a well known artist. It was great to share these treasures from the past. JoAnn Rossi, with the help of her assistant, Bea Tao, has organized the Annual Fine Arts Show to be mounted for the month of March in the Corner Gallery in the Central Library. Diana LoSchiavo, well known local teacher and artist will judge the entries in six categories which include watercolor, oil/acrylic painting, sculpture, mixed media, drawing/pastel and photography. A champagne reception catered by Victorian Catering will be held where prizes will be awarded for Best of Show, Viewer’s Choice, and prizes in all categories will include ribbons and gift certificates to a local art supply store. Marsha Hendler will organize a quilting workshop to be held in her home in March. Each quilter will bring her own machine and materials to learn to make the pattern, “Interlocker, Over and Under.” Quilters will make a few pieces of the quilt and finish it at home. These are always days of great fun as well as of learning. Looking forward to the Spring Luncheon, Rhea Black and Barbara Simone have planned a luncheon at S Restaurant in Westminster Mall when members will have their annual “Show and Tell” where they display and speak about their work during the year. It is a memorable afternoon as members model their work, explain the process of creation and admire each others’ skill. Congratulations to Rhea Black, Board Member, who has been honored by Cerritos College to be placed in their Hall of Fame. Rhea taught for 47 years at the college in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. She coached volleyball, tennis and badminton for 25 years bringing three state championships to the college. She also taught in the classroom until she retired at the age of 75. We are proud of her. A Land Lover’s Garden Club by Eustelle Bosler In February, the ALL Garden Club members traveled by carpool to the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach for lunch, guests of Linda Axel who is a member there. Following a delicious lunch, we carpooled again to Balboa Island for an afternoon of walking, shopping, and even enjoyed dessert. Terri Feterik had a chocolate coated banana, shades of childhood! Tony Acquino did a great job of making all the arrangements for a perfect Southern California day. The March 18 meeting featured a delightful speaker who gave us so much important and timely information on the growth and nurture of African Violets. The speaker, a fifty year veteran of growing the little beauties holds several positions in the Southern California African Violets Council and other organizations. He currently grows about 150 varieties of the violet and its cousins. A short meeting was followed by a catered lunch. April 15, for some a difficult day, will not be for us in ALL this year. Linda Axel has made plans for us to visit Rancho Los Alamitos, a historic garden in Long Beach. Jonelle Wiley shares flower arranging techniques. She has planned an exclusive guided tour of the garden by one of their docents. We will enjoy lunch, either chicken or salmon salad, in the garden. The May meeting, our final one for the 2014-2015 season, will be an installation luncheon at a location yet to be determined. The final meeting gives us a chance to celebrate the members who helped make the previous year a fun-filled and rewarding year of new information and experiences. We also thank in advance members who have volunteered to work towards making the 2015-2016 season just as rewarding and fun-filled. As usual, we extend a warm invitation to any who would like to join us in these kinds of activities, or might just like to visit once to check us out. Schmidt, Vice Commodore Aerial view of the club. Mardi Gras at the HHYC. Thank you for stopping by from all of us at Huntington Harbour Yacht Club. So much has happened since our last article, and we have been excited to share it with all of you. Our Club continues to grow by leaps and bounds as more and more in the community realize all that we have to offer. We are no longer the hidden secret of the Harbour. Open 7 days a week with an incredible menu nightly, plus an amazing bar with music every week and on all special occasions. A major sailing program for both youth and adults alike, so come out and give us a try. Don’t have a boat, that’s not a problem for our Yacht Club, we are just looking for people young and old that have a love of the water and aren’t afraid to have a little fun, while giving back to the community. We have a host of events, many to support our harbour as well as Huntington Beach. Since our last write up we have filled the Club for Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day dinner and dancing and Mardi Gras. We are well into our “make your own” Bloody Mary Bar on selective Sunday brunches, as well as our newest addition - Karaoke on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Our first “cruise out” of the year comes up on March 27th to Marina Pacifica, a shakedown cruise to get rid of all the spiders in our bilges and get ready for the true boating season. Shortly after that we will be upon the main event of the year, our 50th Opening Day on April 12th. This is the day we invite dignitaries from far and wide as well as other yacht clubs to come join in the festivities of the “official” opening of the club for the season. There are typically well over 300 hundred members and guests that revel in this event which includes a parade of boats past the current Flag Officers and throughout the harbour. The military is involved as well as many politicians and celebrities, and we can’t wait for this exciting Huntington Harbour Event. This will all be officiated by our 50th Commodore, Kimberley Harrison and orchestrated by our Jr. Staff Commodore Phil Ventura. In one of my earlier articles I mentioned our Sailing Foundation. This is the Crown Jewel of our organization. To lift a small section of our mission statement: The Huntington Beach Sailing Foundation was established to promote the sport of sailing among youths. By doing so, the Sailing Foundation seeks to create an interest in, and develop youth enthusiasts of, local, national and international amateur sailing, competition, maritime education and stewardship of the environment. More to come on this subject as we get into our sailing and training season. So in closing, this is but a small look into what we are and who we are. So what are you waiting for, pick up the phone and call me. I will personally provide an in-depth tour of our facility, explain the depths of our commitment both to the boating community as well as the Harbour, and perhaps you will find a new home. You can email me [email protected], or call my cell phone at 714-334-1962. I look forward to hearing from you. Carolyn is one of our most enthusiastic and knowledgeable members. She distributed a list to each of us describing the six most common succulents and passed around succulent samples, several of which, senecio, agave, and aloe Vera, are in our Edinger parkway. She provided echeveria, colorful aeonium, and different varieties of sedum for our arrangements. Several members brought plants from which we broke off samples to add as well. Her information was insightful and relevant due to the drought conditions in Southern California. Succulents are easy to grow, good for those who want a drought resistant landscape, but still desire a great garden. A special Valentine’s lunch followed the Workshop. On a bright Sunday morning two years ago, my doorbell rang unexpectedly. Looking down from my balcony, I saw an attractive couple standing on my front porch with a large camera. I yelled “Good morning Dorothy and Boris!” Dorothy replied “Bob, get dressed and come down so we can take photos for the next issue of Harbour Lights Magazine!…Hurry, we have a 9:00 tee time!” I quickly pulled a couple of classic cars out of the garage. Boris and I pretended to be racing down the street while Dorothy snapped amazing photographs of us Big Boys driving our Toys. The Huntington Harbour Car Club was born! Within hours of the April 2012 publication my phone was ringing with new Harbour club applicants. WOW! What a journey it has been! The journey has included a 73 car Harbour Christmas parade, a 67 car run to Ruby’s in South Laguna, a 93 and 31 car photo shoot at my home, a 67 guest picnic in the park, 2 trips to Pebble Beach, and 43 Super Car Sunday Meet Ups. Last year we started our “Super Car Sunday” gathering every Sunday morning at Starbucks on PCH at Peter’s Landing from 7:00 - 9:00 am. We welcome all types of cars and emphasize developing new friendships among the Harbour residents (many ladies show up driving their adored autos!!) Some of the comments we received… Gerry Hutchinson, (Seacliff ): “Super Car Sunday is a great place to meet people with amazing machinery and automotive history. There is pride in the marquee they drive and a story behind every one. It is also great father and son event that kicks starts young interest in a life–long passion….” Ken Conner, (Davenport Island): “There is always a great mix of cars there ranging from exotics to roadsters. My classic little Nash Metropolitan seems to fit in just fine. I’ve been pleased to find the extremely friendly owners are Our featured brand for the day, Ferrari. happy to tell you about their pride and joy regardless of their station in life or the value of their car.” Sheryl Molstad, (mainland): “What a wonderful morning car gathering! Fantastic cars, great conversations. Lots of wives and lady car owners to meet up with. Bob & Emily made us feel very welcomed.” Michael Scafuto, (Sunset Island): “I recently started attending the Super Car Sunday meet up and I have really enjoyed meeting new people and Huntington Harbour neighbors. It’s worth seeing all of the beautiful cars in the Harbour. What a great way to start my day. Looking forward to more.” Lou Staller, (Humbolt Island): “Could life get any better? A sunny Sunday morning with great people, great cars, and a Starbucks within 100 14 feet! In a short time I’ve been attending the gathering I’ve met and formed some warm and friendly relationships with numerous other car guys & gals. Naturally we talk about our cars but we also talk about other personal interests, family and life events.” Jon McGee, (Seabridge): “Why go to Sunday morning at Starbucks? Because you can talk with other friendly people that share your passion for cars. What ever your passion, new cars, old cars, exotic Ferraris, Woodies, Hot Rods and more… Come and join the fun with our group and share the excitement.” Art Sandoval, (mainland): “One of the delights about the meet up is that it’s so casual. No pressure, just join in when you can. The other great feature is that you meet such nice friendly people that share my passions.” Dave Berman, (Coral Cay): “Great bunch of guys and gals to get together with on Sunday mornings. You just never know what’s going to show up, from world class concours cars, exotics and nasty mean machines.” Miss Sloan Molstad- President Los Al Cruisers, (High School Car Club): “I love Super Car Sunday, it has a super friendly, fun feel to it! I can’t wait to tell my school car club members about it. See you Sunday!!” Join us as a spectator or dust off your pride and joy. New members welcome, no membership fee, no dues, no fuss, just fun. Cathy Thomas I admit it. At my house, canned black beans are often the cornerstone of weeknight, spur-of-the-moment meals. The whoosh-whirl sound of lid parting can means that dinner is just minutes away. It’s a welcome tune to a frazzled cook’s ears. Burying the empty can in the compactor, I dwell on the rich, earthy flavor. My conscience considers their high protein and fiber content. My hunger pangs praise their practicality. Raven-wing black and rather small, these kidney-shaped wonders pack tight in the can’s syrupy bean juice. Bean experts say that many varieties aren’t really black but a very deep purple. Except when used for pureed soups or dips, I rinse the canned beauties to remove the murky liquid. Plopped into a colander and doused with cold water, they glisten like polished pebbles. Purists might argue that cooked from scratch black beans are better, insisting that canned beans are saltier and more expensive. True, but dried beans can take more than two hours to cook, eliminating them as a candidate for super-fast dinners. For a quick-to-prepare meal in a bowl, try this pureed black bean soup. It’s ready in about 20 minutes (or less than that if you forgo the pureeing and serve it over a scoop of rice). Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or olive oil in pot on medium-high heat. Add 1 large onion (chopped), 3 cloves garlic (minced) and 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme; cook 3-4 minutes. Add 3 (15-ounce) cans black CALL OUR AWARD WINNING TRAVEL PROFESSIONALS Special Cruise Pricing, 2 for 1 and Free Air Deals! HHPC: Trinidad Group by Mike Novak Did I tell you about our wonderful Trophy? We won Best of Harbour and are very proud We love our Trophy and take it with us all the time. It has a permanent spot in the back seat of President, Ellen Martin’s car. The first trip for our Trophy was to the Anaheim Packing Company. About 20 members attended our traditional monthly outing on January 30th. If you haven’t been to this venue, it is really fun. We sampled a variety of foods from the various restaurants and a few glasses of wine later we were really celebrating! Sheree Novak was seen drinking beer from our trophy! Come on Mr. Trophy, let’s go on a cruise. Our February 2nd cruise aboard the spectacular Crown Princess was planned by Pam Meyers. Our Trinidad Group and Trophy enjoyed a four day cruise to Catalina and Ensenada. We ate at the specialty restaurants, sang, and danced until very late each evening. The highlight was lounging in the Tranquility Spa. Oh yes, Pam slept with the trophy. The Trinidad Ladies get to hold the trophy. Then it was Happy Valentine’s Day at the beautiful home of Bob and Linda Axel. Bob and Linda greeted the Trinidad guests at the door with glasses of champagne followed by Valentine’s kisses. About 50 members enjoyed the evening with wonderful food by TGIS Caterers. A decadent chocolate fudge cake was the topper to a real sweet event. Ellen Martin gave a Philharmonic update and outlined the Trinidad events for the future. Then Mark Arizemedi held the trophy while 19 Ellen Martin jumped off the dock after her speech. For March we are focusing on the Grand Marshal Gala. Churee Kakimoto is hosting our pre-Gala party and it will be great fun. The Trophy will be there and we can all drink champagne from it. See you all at the Hilton Hotel. Trinidad Group is the best! New members are welcomed with open arms! If you would like to join our great group call Linda Axel at 714-325-6111. SeaGate Yacht Club by Jackie Sands and Cindy Allen The wonderful group of SeaGate Yacht Club members who volunteered to be 2015 Event Hosts. The 2015 Event Hosts’ Brunch held on January 11th was well attended. The event was hosted by Commodore Gil Morris and Chris and the SGYC Board. Special thanks go to all the Board Members for the deliciously prepared brunch. It was a casual event that allowed review of the 2015 scheduled events with the event hosts. The backbone of the SeaGate Yacht Club social calendar is the event hosts. These are the members of your club who volunteer to create, plan and host the events we all enjoy throughout the year. Your club, and I emphasize the words “YOUR CLUB,” is always in need of members to help with putting on these events. Usually members who have not done this before team up with experienced members to learn the ropes. Most “newbies” progress to hosting an event on their own (or with the help of friends). All you need to do is let the Commodore or anyone on the SGYC board know that you are willing to help. You will then be guided on how best to do that. Hosting not only helps the club succeed but enhances getting to better know and socialize with your fellow members. In no small measure you get the satisfaction of knowing that you contributed to your club’s success. It’s really more fun than you realize. So, come on, STEP UP this year and volunteer for the upcoming 2016 season. The Sea Gate Yacht Club’s Annual New Member Brunch was held on January 18, 2015, at the Acapulco Restaurant in Long Beach, and hosted by Staff Commodores Les and Cathy Kelly and Jim and Lyn Senske. Eighty three members and new member prospects traveled by boat or car to the annual event. Special thanks go to the following Captains and First Mates who sailed from Huntington Harbour with members and prospective members: Fin-Tastic, Robin and Jean Clark; RO III, Floyd and Mira D’Angelo; Staff Commodore Dale and Susan Giali, Senza Bambini; Lucky Change II, Richard and Judie Kappes; and HattR’US, Robert Sanabria and Lucy Maks. Commodore Gil Morris, accompanied by First Mate Chris, addressed the group and welcomed potential new member prospects Raelene and Gary Downs and Fred Neidner. Chris and Melinda Johnson-Pasqua and Kim Weddon were also introduced as prospective members and became members after they attended the New Members Brunch. The Commodore was held in the SeaGate clubhouse on February 1, 2015. Members enjoyed delicious appetizers, great food, desserts, and camaraderie. The game was very exciting all the way to the last minute. Everyone enjoyed the half-time show and all those great commercials! The hosts would like to thank everyone who came to support their club. Special thank you to Les Kelly and Cindy Allen who took numerous pictures of our members having a great time. As always, Rob and Cindy Allen were there to provide the spirits for all of us. Deborah and Guy Fairon ran the Ship’s Store. And let’s not forget Bob McCormick who took charge of the football pool. Thank you Sharon Courtway for running the first 50/50 raffle which raised $85 towards Enthusiastic SGYC members departing for the New Members Brunch from SeaGate. presented Member Burgees to Marlene and Stan Sholar and Brent Friedland and Linda Webster. Everyone had a great time! The members of the Seagate Yacht Club have had yet another successful event, the Superbowl party hosted by Vice Commodore Mark Monroe and Lina. On Saturday, April 25th, Junior Staff Commodore Josef Davydovits and Kim will be hosting the SeaGate Yacht Club Opening Day. FINS by Barbara Devlin & Pearl Holmes FINS Gourmet, L to R: Barbara Devlin, Marian Galanis, Betty McCarthy, June Ascolesi, Mary Johnston. FINS Members gathered at the home of Maggie Flavia in February to celebrate their annual “Dump It Party” where members bring one of their unneeded or unwanted holidays gifts to share with members. Members numbers are called and the first person to choose a “gift wrapped package” keeps it for a short time until the next person’s number is called and the next person can either “steal the package” or chose a new one. This was a busy “stealing from another member” this year. Lois Fults chose a package with a lovely blue necklace and it was stolen right away by Marge Mitchell and then Barbara Devlin stole it from Marge. After two “steals” the package is dead and Barbara gets to keep the necklace. Bob Longman received a bottle of Bristol Cream Sherry in his gift package that was stolen right away by Tom Mitchell. Mary Johnston, one of our “gardeners in the group” ended up with garden gloves and garden apron. Marge Mitchell “stole” a decorative plate from a member and it is now in her hutch with her plate collection. Betty McCarthy one of our great cooks ended up with a quilted cooking apron! Prior to the “exchange” of gifts members enjoyed a catered luncheon from “Buon Gusto” Following the exchange of gifts members enjoyed a dessert “Make your own Sundae” with ice cream with Carmel Sauce Made by Mary Johnston and Chocolate Fudge Sauce made by Pearl Holmes. Also seen enjoying the evening supper and entertainment were June Ascolesi, Jon Fults, Carol Gallagher, Bernie Herron, Donna Longman and Barbara Simone. Daytime Gourmet held a Valentine Gourmet Celebration Luncheon at the home of June Ascolesi with Betty McCarthy as cohostess. The hostess made the most delicious broiled Cheese Stuffed Dates wrapped with bacon secured with a toothpick which was a big hit with every one! The menu consisted of Roasted Beet Soup with Crème Fraiche, Herb-Brined Pork Prime Rib Roast, Apple, Potato and Onion Gratin, Sauteed Asparagus and Snap Peas. Dessert was Cherry Tartlets with Ice Cream. Members cooking and enjoying Valentine’s Day were June Ascolesi, Barbara Devlin, Marian Galanis, Mary Johnston, Betty McCarthy and Pearl Holmes. Huntington Harbour Republican Women, Federated by Dianna Gadberry, President The HHRWF are pleased to announce that Dr. J. David Lehman will be their guest speaker on Wednesday, April 22nd at Meadowlark Country Club. Dr. Lehman is well versed in many subjects. Among the topics that he speaks on are: America’s Heritage, The Government takeover of American Schools, The United Nations and Understanding Islamic Terrorism. Dr. Lehman has been a guest speaker at the Eagle Forum on many occasions. On May 27th the club will be hosting a tribute meeting in honor of Memorial Day. This meeting holds a special place in the hearts of our club members. It is an honor to show respect to the men and women in our military that have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. We are honored to have Navy Lt. Joseph Brocato as our guest speaker. Lt. Brocato gives a very informative presentation on former battles that our military has engaged in on foreign soil. He shares a very touching slide presentation featuring World War II historical facts as well as the photos of those that have fought in historical battles. To make the evening extra special, he brings with him a few World War II Veterans. The HHRWF is the educational arm of the Republican Party. We raise funds to sponsor high school aged students to attend our Advocacy Program that is 24 held in Sacramento in April. The trip gives these students the opportunity to learn about local government. The students visit their local elected legislatures, get a tour of our State Capital, as well as attending many educational workshops. To raise monies to support our Advocacy Program, the club has a Waterfront Home Tour Fundraiser Event on September 26th. For information in regards to the above programs please contact club President Dianna Gadberry at 714-6580284. For membership information contact Membership Chairman Charlotte Christiana at 714-846-4841. California State Lands Commission Taxing Docks by Frank Singer As you have gleaned from the last article, the fight is far from over. Yes, we lost round one. The fight is still to repeal SB 152 and we are not in this fight alone. Lake Tahoe and, to a lessor extent, Sacramento Delta waterfront property owners are in this fight too. Lake Tahoe has 800 waterfront property owners who are also fighting mad that their docks are under attack by the Lands Commission. Just like our docks are a refuge for the boating public in Huntington Harbour, Lake Tahoe docks are refuge in case of forest fires which might block exit roads. I have been in touch with Lake Tahoe’s property owner’s representative Jan Brisco as well as some of the property owners. Here is where there is some major differences between us and the others. The Lands Commission, for the present, is charging us $4.50/sq ft annually for our docks. They are charging Lake Tahoe property owners $.79/square foot and the delta people $.19/square foot. My plan is to convene a meeting with legislators from all our communities in the coming months to lay out a strategy to repeal SB 152’s illegal tax. When I get a meeting set up I will let everyone know to see who might want to attend. Our options are to Legislate or Litigate. The Legislative route would be more cost effective, however with Sacramento’s huge money appetite Litigation might be more affective. I have already met with our new State Senator Janet Nguyen and will soon meet with others to get their take. The fight is far from over. Frank Singer, 3552 Venture Drive (Trinidad Island), phone: 714-840-6476, email: [email protected]. Trinidad Ladies Club by Jan Mcknew Ruth Proodian and Sandy Gallaugher. Our February meeting for the Trinidad Ladies Club, which is one of two evening meetings a year, was held in Sunset Beach at Roman Cucina. Vikki Morrison graciously agreed to host the cost of the meeting. Thank you Vikki! We had beautiful pink paper flower decorations, candy and table decorations to celebrate Valentine’s Day. With no corkage fee at the restaurant, we had plenty of wine to help get us in the party mood! Our March meeting was sponsored by Debbie Cervantes and held at the lovely waterfront home of Sandy Gallaugher. Sandy had every room decorated for St. Patrick’s Day! Little Leprechauns, Debbie Wood, Betty Dolinoy, Lucille Mascoli, Debbie Cervantes, Jan McKnew, Joanne Verhoeven. four-leaf clovers, and other bright green decorations were everywhere! A lovely luncheon consisting of three different salads, a special egg casserole, rolls, wine, coffee and desserts of lemon and cinnamon bundt cakes, chocolate covered brownies and cups of ice cream. After our business meeting, Martha Baumel, Programs Chair, introduced the club to a makeup artist who demonstrated the lastest cosmetics on two of our members and shared some beauty secrets. If I tell you what they are, they wouldn’t be secrets any more! Plans are underway for our Installation of Officers at the May meeting, with a special location to be 25 announced at our next meeting which will be held at Sherrill Lander’s home. In September we will have a trip to the Los Alamitos Race Track with a ladies and gents hat contest. Our regular meetings are usually held on the first Tuesdays of September, October, December, January, March, April and May from 10 AM - 1 PM for lunch. In November and February, we have an evening meeting from 5:30 PM to 9 PM with dinner served. If you live on Trinidad Island and would like information on joining our group, please contact our Membership Chairman, Jan Little Carone 949-887-2791. They are a philanthropic non profit whose “mission is to provide contributions to aid in accomplishing the social, cultural, educational and charitable needs of our local community.” Their President Gayle Winnen invited us to their monthly meeting to discuss the history and relevance of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. What a delight it was to meet such an accomplished group of women. As luck would have it my best friends Brad and Angelina were out of the country and my supersonic jet was in maintenance so I was available. It was a 7:00 PM meeting and I was the “headliner”. I was specifically told by Gayle she was looking for an energetic presentation. I told her she had the right person. So, I did what I love to do, I grabbed their attention and then proceeded to wow them with the fascinating history of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and the impressive accomplishments of the BCC. I think from their questions and responses they were enjoying our time together. Here are a few of the questions from some of the ladies: 1. Are crows a problem at the Bolsa Chica? Yes they can be. 2. Could the cogged stone have been used for grinding or money? Probably not. No evidence of any wear or tear. Archeologists think cogged stones were used for ceremonial purposes. 3. How does carbon dating work? I don’t have a clue and I don’t want anyone knowing how old I am. I referred them to Molly. 4. What’s the future of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve? We discussed the constant maintenance, restoration, education and the hopes of the BCC building an Interpretive Center. 5. Who is in charge of the BCER? Fish and Wildlife. 6. Who do we call for a tour? You can call me! I’ d love to show you around. 7. Does the BCC have a wine bar at the Center? Yes, we can arrange that quite easily. What’s your pleasure? Red or White? It was such an honor to get to meet these ladies who thoughtfully get together with the intention of wanting to make a difference in our community. If your group would like to learn more about the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve or the BCC then please contact Donna at: [email protected] or 818-512-6865. Majorie serves as the Co-chair of the Guilds’ umbrella organization that serves all the local groups. Members of the Flying Dutchman, the Huntington Harbour Chapter of The Guilds of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, celebrated love and each other at their recent Valentine’s Day luncheon held at the Mile Square Golf Club. A delicious repast and their annual “white elephant” swap provided members an opportunity to celebrate their own valentines while supporting the efforts of the Center. Their next event will feature a changing of the guard as Chair Carol Kirkwood passes the gavel and new officers are installed. The Flying Dutchman is a very active and successful chapter among the Guilds, and their fundraising efforts help to support the educational programs of the Center. They plan quarterly events at homes and local venues, and over the years have earned their reputation as a group that enjoys the fun in fund-raising. If you would like to know more about the Huntington Harbour chapter, contact membership chairs Jim or Joy Connors, at 562-592-1290. Guests are welcome at events. What is the status of repairing the bridge and re-establishing public access to the marina? The County has been working daily on efforts to expedite bridge repairs and coordinate with other agencies to re-establish public access. We understand access to the marina is very important to Sunset Aquatic Marina visitors and boat owners and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Working with engineers and contractors during the past several days, the design has been completed for a temporary repair in order to open the bridge with two lanes to accommodate most trucks/trailers with boats. The County is finalizing details in an effort to begin construction the week of th March 16 . Please note that while the County is trying to initiate and complete this work as quickly and safely as possible, the schedule could change depending on adverse weather or other factors. Am I able to get to the marina side of the bridge? The County will only escort people to/from the marina side of the bridge if there is an emergency or if there is risk to life or property. While the County is preparing to initiate repair work, it is also working with other agencies to identify if other access alternatives are feasible as soon as possible. Can the dirt access road north of the Bolsa Chica Channel be used to access the marina? The access road north of the Bolsa Chica Channel is on property owned by the U.S. Navy. It is not a public road. The U.S. Navy has restricted use of the access road to emergency or service vehicle use only. How can I get more information or updates? If you have questions, please contact Shannon Widor, Strategic Communications Officer at Orange County Public Works at (714) 438-9707. We urge you to leave your name and phone number or e-mail address to receive updates when available. Updates, when they become available, will also be posted on our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ocpublicworks. For life-threatening emergencies, please call 911. Background information about the bridge closure: Why a closure? The recommended closure results from a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) bridge inspection of the supporting structures under the roadway. The County of Orange, which owns bridge, verified the need to close the bridge through an independent expert engineering analysis that concurred with the findings by Caltrans. What agencies are involved? The County is coordinating with the Cities of Huntington Beach and Seal Beach, the Army Corps of Engineers, the California Coastal Commission and the U.S. Navy (which owns the property north of the Bolsa Chica Channel). 28 29 +XPEROW,VODQG:DWHUIURQW 'UDPDWLF %5%$ RIIHUV IRUPDO OLYLQJ URRP VWRU\ FHLOLQJ VWRQH ŹUHSODFHODUJHNLWFKHQXSVWDLUVORIWKXJHPDVWHUVXLWHZLWKZDWHUYLHZV :DWHUIURQWHQFORVHGSDWLRZLWKEXLOWLQV+XPEROW %HDXWLIXO&UHVWPRRU(VWDWH+RPH /RFDWLRQ/RFDWLRQ/RFDWLRQ *RUJHRXVO\ XSGDWHG %5 %$ RQ RYHUVL]HG LQWHULRU ORW *UDQLWH FRXQWHUV VHDWLQJ DUHD IRUPDO OLYLQJ GLQLQJ URRPV )UHQFK GRRUV WR\DUGVLGHGŹUHSODFHLQPDVWHU%RQXVURRP2& (QMR\ZDWHUYLHZVIURPWKLV%5%$6HD%ULGJHWRZQKRPH2SHQźRRU SODQZLWKOLYLQJURRPDQGGLQLQJURRPUHFHVVHGOLJKWLQJEULFNŹUHSODFHDQG JDUGHQZLQGRZ3ULYDWHGHFNRIIRIPDVWHUEHGURRP2& 2FHDQ9LHZ3HQWKRXVH &RQWHPSRUDU\7UL/HYHO7RZQKRPH &RPSOHWHO\UHPRGHOHG%5%$UHFHVVHGOLJKWLQJYDXOWHGFHLOLQJV FHUDPLFWLOHźRRUVDQGSODQWDWLRQVKXWWHUV/LYLQJURRPZLWKŹUHSODFH )UHQFKGRRUVOHDGWRSDWLR&HQWUDODLUKHDW2& 30 /LJKWEULJKW%5%$KRPHIHDWXUHVIUHVKSDLQWWUDYHUWLQHFRXQWHUVQHZ WLOHDQGFDUSHW0DVWHUVXLWHKDVDŹUHSODFHEXLOWLQV6SDFLRXVOLYLQJ URRPZLWKDWULXPFDUDWWDFKHGJDUDJH2& If the car in your dreams is not the car in your garage, we should talk.
