Frequently Asked Questions
What is Air Force ROTC?
Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is a three- or four-year program that prepares
college students to become officers in the United States Air Force. For the most part, Air Force ROTC cadets
are just like other college students. They may live in the dorms, join a fraternity or sorority, participate in
college sports, etc. The difference is in the elective courses that ROTC students take. These elective courses
will translate into a minor in aerospace studies for OU students.
Am I eligible to join?
To enroll in Air Force ROTC, you must be a full-time undergraduate student at OU or one of our
crosstown schools and have a CGPA of 2.0 or greater. You must be able to complete your undergraduate
studies and commission before age 30 (up to age 35 with waiver - restricted to high quality cadets). You
must be of good moral character and in good physical condition, and be a US citizen or in pursuit of US
citizenship.
What are the weekly time commitments?
Freshmen and sophomores will attend Air Force ROTC classes three hours each week. The onecredit academic class will provide an introduction to aerospace studies and a background on aerospace
history. It can be taken on either Tuesday or Thursday. The two-hour Leadership Laboratory occurs once a
week on Thursday afternoons. Cadets are required to wear their uniforms to Thursday classes. Cadets are
also required to attend Physical Training (PT) twice a week at the Houston-Huffman Center from 6AM-7AM.
PT is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Will the Air Force pay for my school?
Air Force ROTC offers many scholarship opportunities, although you do NOT have to be on
scholarship to participate in Air Force ROTC. High school students can apply for a four-year Air Force
ROTC scholarship online during the early part of their senior year at http://www.afrotc.com. Once in college,
ROTC cadets may be nominated for scholarships of varying length, up to three-and-a-half years. Students
earning technical and science degrees fill the Air Force’s greatest needs and therefore are among the most
sought after.
What is the difference between joining Air Force ROTC and enlisting in the Air Force?
Air Force ROTC is one of three commissioning sources for the USAF. Upon completion of a
bachelor’s degree and the Air Force ROTC program, a cadet will be commissioned as an officer, and will
report to an Air Force base for training in a specific career field. Officers are trained to be leaders. Rank,
pay, and career opportunities for officers are commensurate with their elevated level of responsibility.
Enlisting in the Air Force is done through a local recruiter followed by basic training and prospective
technical training. This avenue does not require a college degree.
What is the service commitment after completing Air Force ROTC?
Most officers have a four-year active duty service commitment. For pilots it is 10 years after pilot
training, and six years for Combat Systems Officers after training. Air Battle Managers have a six-year
commitment.
