No Longer Cast Offs, In The Arsenal and Betting
Exchange Seek Rooney Win
By Bill Finley
This business of buying yearlings, it's a funny game.
Sometimes they look great, have an impeccable pedigree
and go for seven figures and it turns out they're slower than
a slug. And sometimes they go through the sales ring,
unwanted, cast aside and already labeled as sure-fire bums
and they turn out to be sensational on the racetrack. No
one can figure out why it happens that way.
The connections behind In the Arsenal and Betting
Exchange, two
horses who
definitely fell
through the
cracks at the
2013 Harrisburg
yearling sale,
don't have the
answers to why
some yearlings
turn to gold and
some to dust. But
they're not going
Despite being a $7,500 buy back at the to worry about it.
sales In The Arsenal has flourished
Right now, all
they're focused on
is winning the $380,000 Rooney tomorrow night at Yonkers
with horses that were plucked out of the proverbial yearling
trash bin.
In The Arsenal, who will be heavily favored in the race,
was among the best 2-year-old male pacers in the sport
last year. He won six of 11 starts, beat Artspeak and made
$396,318. He's 2 for 2 this year and is heading into the
Rooney off a win in last week's elims.
That's obviously not what buyers were expecting at
Harrisburg when the bidding stalled at $7,000 and breeder
White Birch Farm bought the American Ideal colt back for
$7,500.
"He was a little on the small side and he is a later in the
year foal," said W hite Birch Farm Manager Steve W illiams.
"He is a mid to late May foal . And probably the biggest
knock against him, which a lot of yearling buyers don't like,
he was the 15th foal out of the mare. But I've seen the
majority of her foals and this was by far and away the best
looking colt she had had in a long time. The colt had an air
about him that I've always liked. W hile on the small side, he
is very well put together and had nice way of going. I
honestly really liked him, which is the reason I bought him
back."
W illiams knew he was rolling the dice. W hite Birch owner
Michael Parisi decided to take a vacation during that
particular sale and left W illiams in charge. W illiams knew
that Parisi doesn't usually like to buy back colts and wasn't
sure how his boss would react. Parisi later admitted to him
that had he been attending Harrisburg himself he would
have let the colt go for the previous bid of $7,000.
"W hen I bought him back, I was a little worried what
Michael's response would be," W illiams said. "After all, we
knew what the buyers knew, that he was small and the
mare's 15th foal."
Now, W illiams looks like a genius. But he says he doesn't
deserve all the credit. The horse has flourished under the
care of Kelvin Harrison and W illiams said that the trainer
has made a huge difference. W hite Birch had never before
given a horse to Harrison, but the trainer just happened to
be in the right place at the right time.
"W hen Kelvin came to (W hite Birch's training center) he
came with five horses," W illiams said. "Kelvin is an old
friend of mine; I've known him forever. Michael said who
should we give him to give him and I recommended Kelvin.
He was down on horses a little bit, but we know he can train
a horse. I was trying to help Kelvin, trying to help an old
friend, so I told Michael he should get the horse, to give him

to Kelvin. Now he's up to 17 horses in his stable because of
what he's done with this horse."
It was at the very same sale that Tom Fanning thought he
had discovered a nice prospect in the Bettor's Delight colt
Betting Exchange. He paid $22,000 for the yearling on
behalf of an undisclosed owner. Then the owner got cold
feet and said he didn't want the horse after all. Fanning
believes one of the reasons may have been that the dam
was also old. Betting Exchange is the 12th foal from
Cheeky Hanover.
Fanning was liable to get stuck with the horse and all the
training expenses, but convinced owner Howard Taylor to
buy half and his accountant Stan Kajfasz to buy 25 percent.
He kept 25 percent for himself. The early signs were that
the two new owners had wasted their money.
"Training down as a 2 year old he was horrible," Fanning
said. "He trained like a slug."
"Every time he told me the horse wasn't doing well I told
him you'll work it out, that's what you do," Kajfasz said. "I
have all the faith in world in Tom as a trainer."
As the year went on, Betting Exchange, who will race
with In The Arsenal as part of an entry, started to show
some life. He won three of seven starts at two and made
$83,188. He lost his first two races this year, one when his
equipment broke in a sire stakes races at Tioga, but turned
in a powerful performance when second by a neck behind
Sonofa Sizzle in his Rooney elim.
"He finished the year great and this year he's looking to
beat horses," Fanning said. "Usually, it doesn't turn out that
way."
Despite Betting Exchange's strong showing, In the
Arsenal is very much the one to beat. He has the class, the
talent, the right driver in Brian Sears and drew post two.
"You do not want to underestimate the other horses or be
overly confident, but, yes I am confident in the horse, in
Kelvin and the way he came back this year and the way he
is coming into the race," Sears said. "I feel pretty good
about it. I think he's going to be the type of horse who will
show up in those races like the Meadowlands Pace and
North America Cup and be heard from. He might not win
every one, but he'll get his share.
"I'm really happy to see the way he came back mentally.
He seems a lot more mature. He had a few issues where
he would get a little rambunctious in the hole, but he has
been a total gentleman since I qualified him at the start of
the year. That was my main concern. As far as gait goes,
he's always been slick gaited. The main thing is how he
grew up mentally."
Sears chose In the Arsenal over the other elimination
winner, Sonofa Sizzle, a decision that looks all that much
smarter now that that horse drew the eight post.

Traceur Hanover Owner Nearly Quit Game
By Perry Lefko
The owner of
Traceur Hanover
said he almost quit
the business
earlier this year
after 45 years in
the sport and
spending $1 million
a year to buy
yearlings because
Traceur Hanover is pointing to the
of the fallout from
Somebeachsomewhere
last year's tainted
Breeders Crown win by the two-year-old pacing colt.
Quebec businessman Richard Berthiaume told Harness
Racing Update on Thursday he came close to leaving the
business because of the grief he endured over a matter in
which he feels he was personally wronged without being at
fault.
"I spend $1 million a year (buying horses) and I never
know what I have on my hands when I buy a colt or a
yearling," he said. "Last year was a really, really bad year. I
was so disappointed I was going to go out of the game. But
I have a passion racing horses and I've had Normand
Bardier and his brother Claude with me for 30 years
(managing the operation), and before that their father was
my trainer."
Berthiaume was prohibited from racing his horses at the
Meadowlands in the off-season as a penalty for standing by
trainer Corey Johnson, who had one of his horses test
positive for excess levels of total carbon dioxide at
W oodbine Racetrack a week before Traceur Hanover and
stablemate Voelz Hanover had already qualified for the
Breeders Crown, and Meadowlands owner Jeff Gural felt
that Berthiaume should have scratched the horses from the
races rather than disgrace his track and the Breeders
Crown. Neither Gural nor the Hambletonian Society or the
New Jersey Racing Commission had any jurisdiction to
scratch the horses after the state attorney's office pointed to

a precedent that ruled a trainer could not be banned until
having a hearing.
Traceur Hanover won his final, while Voelz Hanover was
a non-factor in the Open Mare Pace. Johnson had only
been training the two horses for a month because
Berthiaume needed someone to condition the horses in the
U.S. The Bardiers, who are based in Montreal, were
unavailable due to family commitments.
Traceur Hanover had shown little initially in Johnson's
care, but came to hand for the Breeders Crown, winning his
elimination race in a career best time at over 22-1 odds,
and the final at just under 4-1 odds. Johnson told Harness
Racing Update earlier this year he worked hard to correct a
problem he had with Traceur Hanover, specifically one leg
kicking another leg, known as crossfiring. He claimed
shoeing the horse differently and icing made a major
difference and it all came together with a victory in the
Breeders Crown elimination race, followed by the final.
Johnson, who was only in his fourth season as a trainer,
was suspended 13 months for violating terms of the
probation for a positive drug test (also for TC02) he had
less than two years before. He did not contest the
suspension in a hearing with the Ontario Racing
Commission.
Pat Lachance trained some of Berthiaume's horses in the
winter in the U.S.
In January, Gural announced that blood samples taken
from Traceur Hanover and Voelz Hanover a few days
before the Breeders Crown finals and sent to Hong Kong for
analysis revealed cobalt levels five times higher than the
threshold level typically found in a horse's system.
In addition to banning Berthiaume's horses from racing at
the Meadowlands, Gural is refusing to allow Traceur
Hanover to be entered in the Meadowlands Pace. Gural
returned the sustaining payments Berthiaume had made to
keep his horse eligible for the race.
"W hen I tried to explain to him, he said 'I don't want to see
you or your horses," Berthiaume said. "That's his decision.
I'm not a gambler, I just like (racing horses). I've never had
problems with anybody.
"I didn't understand the reason why Gural (did what he
did)," Berthiaume added. "He said 'you need to know who
you do business with', but I have four different trainers and I
can't know what they are doing (all the time). How am I
going to know what they do with my horses? All the trainers
that (work) for me, they never know me. I don't go to the
races. I watch the races on television in Montreal. I just
send them the horses and they call Normand Bardier. The
only (trainer) who knows me is Ben Baillargeon. He trained
14 horses for me for two or three years and we won a lot of
races in Toronto.
"I really like the Meadowlands Pace and I don't know why
they refuse to let me race (in it). It's not the fault of the

horse, it's not the vault of me, the owner. After racing in
Toronto, I have to send Traceur to some other trainer in the
United States? W ho am I going to (hire)? Do I have call the
FBI to take a survey on them?
"I really don't know (who will train the horse in the U.S.).
Pat Lachance did a good job for me in December, January
and February. I'll probably send it to Pat Lachance. But
there's one important point for me: I like the same driver. I
want the same driver to drive Traceur Hanover all year. It's
best to have the same driver. It's not an easy game to race
horses."
Randy W aples drove the colt for all of his
Canadian-based races last year and is slated to drive him
in a qualifier Friday at Mohawk Racetrack. Traceur Hanover
is being pointed to the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes June
6 as his first start en route to the North America Cup, which
begins with the eliminations June 13 and is followed by the
$1 million final June 20.
Earlier this week, Berthiaume sold five-year-old pacing
mare Request For Parole, a winner of nine of 45 career
races and almost $200,000, to trainer Ron Burke for an
undisclosed amount. She has won four of 12 starts this
year and $40,250.
Voelz Hanover was retired in the off-season after failing
two in four races and bred to Mach Three.
Go Daddy Go Returns To Racing: Go Daddy Go,
Canada's top two-year-old colt pacer, makes his season
debut Friday night at W estern Fair Raceway in London.
John Campbell drives for trainer/breeder Bob McIntosh,
who owns the colt with Dave Boyle and Diamond Creek
Racing, which bought into the partnership earlier this year.

races, schedules, driver and team bios etc. It does more
than that, however. It also includes all on-board telemetry,
cameras, and heart rate monitors. You can also watch the
race live.
Horse racing, and harness racing particularly, has, had
and will have more money to promote itself than Indycar
has. W ith eleventy trillion dollars (only a slight exaggeration)
in slots money, the cash has been there and still is there,
but it's like this sport is run in a vacuum. That is simply
astounding to me.
Six Things That Astound Me In Racing
Horse racing, especially of the Standardbred variety,
rarely ceases to amaze me. Something, somewhere, at
some time, tends to be more than interesting; some of it
good, some not so good, but it is never boring. I thought I
would jot down a few things that amaze, surprise or utterly
astound me from time to time.
1. Ron Burke, Your Friendly Neighborhood Stable
Management Master: Often times a trainer gets nabbed
with a dreaded 'overage'. Most times it's a one and done
thing; the trainer or vet made a mistake, and everyone is
more careful next time. Other times it happens three, four,
five or six or more times. In Thoroughbred racing there
have been a few high profile trainers with a handful of
starters blow up a black box more than once, which
sometimes involves legal action, where we hear a "test is
flawed". Sometimes the press runs to these trainers
defense as well. You'd think cut off times are like a Rubik's
cube, blowing up a black box is simply random bad luck.
W ell, maybe they should meet Ron Burke. Since 2008,
Ron has started horses 25,870 times. His horses have
paced or trotted at dozens of racetracks, in jurisdictions
from Illinois to Ontario, from Pennsylvania to Prince
Edward Island. His horses have been tested more than any
other trainer in harness racing, or Thoroughbred racing,
and it's not really close. Despite that, you don't even need
one hand to count the number of times his horses tested
over for an 'overage'; to my knowledge he's never blew up
a black, red or blue box. People can rumor-monger about
Ron as much as they want, but for your average every day
therapeutic drug that some find impossible to manage
properly, he runs a tight ship.
2. Apps, W ith Some W ork, They Got Apps! - In the early
2000's, Indycar racing, after a breakup and in-fight with the
IRL, went downhill fast. Sponsors left quicker than people
sold their 1978 Pinto, revenues took a major tank and the
sport was (probably still is) deader than dead. Despite that,
and almost no capital, the Indycar league - a disparate
group of car owners - did enough work the past year to sell
Verizon as a new sponsor. They didn't just want money for
purses, though, Indycar worked with Verizon to create an
Indycar App, and the advertising of it ($5 million worth) was
a major part of the deal.
This app has everything you need, including historical

the narrative that horses are somehow physiologically

different at age four from five and six year olds, you'd think
the Gural Rule was the death of racing, or the New York
Times will write a feature about how cruel it is to animals.
What a load of hooey.
Horses at three can make some serious money, because
the stakes cash for them is spread out, and big. It's
probably tantamount to a college football QB with other
worldly stats; there's a lot of those. But because a horse is
a stakes winner at three does not mean he is good enough
to be a stakes winner outside the age group, just like plenty
of quarterback's with huge stats won't even get drafted to
the pros. Most horses don't fail at four because they were
four, they fail at four because they weren't fast enough
horses in the first place. In fact, many horses who 'fail' at
four, fail at age five or six too.
Bolt the Duer excelled at four. He was fast. He wasn't as
good at five and had a bad year. His opposite was Sweet
Lou who was good at four, but better at five. Lucan
Hanover was not very good at four, but A Rocknroll Dance
was. Doo W op Hanover just set a track record at Tioga in
147.4 at four, besting the old track record of Pet Rock,
another four year old. Bee a Magician might be better at
five, yes, but she was just handily beaten in the Maxie Lee
by Father Patrick, who is four.
Sense a pattern? No? Good, because there isn't one.
I get there was a time when a star horse turned four, and
having to face older vets, it was very hard. It's not 1960
anymore. Horses are better gaited, easier to break and
faster than ever. They season faster, too. If your stakes
winning three year old turns four, he might be an overnight
horse for the rest of his career and not a stakes horse. It's
just the way it is.
4. A Schedule, My Kingdom for a Schedule - I read that in
week one of the upcoming NFL season, the Titans play the
Bucs, which will (should) feature Marcus Mariota and
Jameis W inston - the top two draft picks - squaring off.
Cool. W hat we won't have to do is try and figure out when it
is, or where I will have to watch it.
In harness racing, it might be the exact opposite. Races
aren't scheduled, and neither are meets. If they were, a big
race would not be going off at the same time as six others,
and surely a meet like Pocono would not be overlapped by
a meet at the Meadowlands. W hen will tracks get together
and do something tangible with scheduling for the good of
the sport, and handles? I am not holding my breath.
5. Is the Meadowlands the Only Track that Spends
Money? - With the aforementioned eleventy trillion dollars of
slot money, it never ceases to amaze me that the big
spender on marketing tends to be the Meadowlands, a track
without even $1 of slot money.
6. The History and Uniqueness of Harness Racing - I was
fortunate enough to read Bob Marks' and Victoria Howard's
"Meadow Skipper - The Untold Story" this week. The book
was interesting, filled with incredible stories, but to me it
HarnessRacingUpdate.com
• 5/29/15 PAGE 8 of 14
was much more than that. It really reminded me how much
I respect the sport of harness racing.
The people who bred, raced and stood Meadow Skipper's
sire and dam and grandsire and dam; the two year olds at
Ben W hite; the tantalizingly told stories of the Meadow
Skipper and Overtrick battles; the Palins, the O'Briens, the
Dancers, the Haughtons; people taking chances on
dreams; the advancement of the breed; the state fairs, the
big dances; the crowds, the horsemanship, the vision of a
horse that could be a super-sire for a 100 years.
W e - well, I know I do in this column - get lost on the day
to day machinations of the sport. But when I take a breath,
and study the past, this sports' history astounds and
amazes me. I think I, and maybe some of you too, need to
remember that more often.

Can State Treasurer Overcome The Eight Post?
There’s nothing State Treasurer loves quite like the
Molson Pace at W estern
Fair. He’s won the race in
each of the last two years
and comes into the 2015
Molson in good form. He
won a Preferred at Mohawk
in his last start.
But tonight he’ll have to
overcome more than seven
State Treasurer seeks his
rivals. He drew the dreaded
third straight Molson win
eight post, which means, at
tonight
W estern Fair, that he is a
trailer. Fifty horses out of 548 have won from post eight at
this meet for a percentage of 9.1 percent.
In 2014 State Treasurer had the one post in the Molson
and he had the three the year before.
Because of the draw, All Bets Off looks like to horse t
beat. Coming off a win at Flamboro in the Confederation
Cup against fellow 4-year-olds, he drew post one. Matt
Kakaley will drive for Ron Burke.
Race 7, Claiming $10,000 Pace
PRINCE SHARKA won on the drop last week and it was a
pretty well meant win for a horse selected here last week.
He owns a class edge over most of these, moves inside a
few slots and there isn't any reason he can't compete the
mini-series sweep. ACELO HANOVER was claimed away
from Russo last week but I'm sure will be just as good with
Virgil Morgan; beaten favorite looks to bounce back.
CROCADILE CANYON was good last week upon arriving
from Plainridge and was claimed out of that race; is
certainly capable of beating these with the hot barn.
STORMIN RUSTLER parlayed a perfect trip last out to
victory and will need similar luck from post 10; ASTREOS
FLASH is bound to be firing early right to that one's inside.
HURRIKANE JON PAUL had every chance last week but
couldn't reach. Let's see if ANDY BARAN can repeat.
Race 8, N/W $7,500 L5 Trot
IN NOMINE PATRI was one that I liked last week and he
just missed at nearly 10/1 to the resurgent Lauderdale. He
now goes from post 9 to the pole and is the one to beat at
this reduced level; Hanney has been driving him well here.
DOUGH DOUGH makes her fourth start back on the year
seeking the right level for Borden; this is a giant drop on
paper. DREAM ROCKER can continue to be used
underneath. ROYAL MALINDA has been here before and
is better than those recent distance races at Yonkers show;
I think we'll see some type of turnaround. B YOYO was a
winner at this level two back but then faded last out when
he had to go first over; tall task from out here. ITZAZIAM
drops in need of a wakeup; he was good at times here last
year.
Race 9, F&M N/W $8,500 L5 Pace
SET ME UP lands the post edge on a couple of her key
rivals and is better than those recent lines indicate. This
one raced in the Open here three back and was won by a
mare that just beat the FFA's at Philly and the Burke trainee
has won here before. BEACH STORY makes her third start
back on the year and has been up against vastly superior
mares in her last two; she'll show more in this spot. BEACH
GRANNY has been racing gamely in a number of her recent
tries but this post is a killer; that winning sweep from her
four back was against considerably lesser. RIVER RUNS
THRU IT was wicked two back in her first start for Russo
but didn't have the same pop last out; may not be as classy
as some of these. HIT BY LIGHTNING drops.
Race 10, Claiming $10,000 Pace
NORTHERN PRIZE was a game winner two back and
immediately drops back down to the level he belongs at.
He's the scourge of this group and should be played even
from post 10. W HITTAKTER was second here a couple

races ago in a 1:50:2 mile; any repeat of that try would give
him a big shot. TOUGH LOVE enters here from Freehold
where he was second last out to the once classy horse
Macraider; we saw a Freehold invader blow up the board
here last week too. CAJON HOT SHOT hasn't lasted on
the front in any of his recent tries but his speed may go a
bit further with this group.

Another Big Day for Brian Brown in PASS Action
By Mike Bozich
There were three divisions of PASS action for 3-year-old
colt and gelding pacers at Harrah's Philadelphia on
Thursday (May 28). They were each going for a purse of
approximately $70,000.
In the first division, it was Brian Brown trainee Rise Up
Now (Scott Zeron) surviving a furious stretch challenge
from W akizashi Hanover (Tim Tetrick) to win. The son of
Somebeachsomewhere remains undefeated in 2015, now a
perfect six-for-six. Rise Up Now was able to seize
command just beyond the quarter, taking the lead from Ron
Burke trainee Cooperstown (Yannick Gingras). After rating
the second quarter, Rise Up Now squared off against
Wakizashi Hanover. These two battled the rest of the way,
with Rise Up Now winning by a neck in a final time of
1:50.2. Tomy Terror (Corey Callahan) finished third. Rise
Up Now is owned by Strollin Stable, McNamara, Robinson,
& Country Club Acres. He paid $6.40.
The second division was taken by Don Emond's Allbeef N
Nobull (Brett Miller). The son of McCardle went right for the
lead, getting the quarter in :27. Co-favorite Yankee Bounty
(Yannick Gingras) brushed to the lead shortly after. The
other co-favorite Mcardles Lightning (Scott Zeron)
challenged first-over at the three-quarter pole, but faded in
the stretch to finish third. Allbeef N Nobull closed up the
open stretch to beat Yankee Bounty by one length, stopping
the clock in a career best 1:51. It was his sixth win of nine
lifetime starts. The Monte Gelrod trainee paid $7.00 to win.
Trainer Brian Brown picked up his second PASS win of
the day in the third division, this time with Lost For W ords
(Dave Miller). The son of W ell Said left hard from the gate
along with Jimmy Takter trainee Blood Brother (Yannick
Gingras). These two battled to the quarter in :27.2. Lost For
W ords took over just after the quarter and went on to a
convincing score, stopping the clock in 1:49.3 for his eighth
career win. It was a lifetime's best. Blood Brother settled for
second, while Lyons Levi Lewis (Matt Kakaley) finished
third. He paid $6.20 to win. Lost For W ords is owned by
Country Club Acres, Robinson, Lombardo, and Strollin
Stable.
