Burke Concedes Levy, But Not Giving up on
Foiled Again

Foiled Again will not make the April 25 final of the George
Morton Levy Series at Yonkers.
Trainer Ron Burke all but guaranteed that when he failed
to drop his name in the entry box for tomorrow's fourth leg
of the series.
Even if he
races the

week, which
is no
certainty, it's
highly
unlikely he
will have
accumulated
enough
points to

"He just
needed the week off," Burke explained. "Things aren't
really right with him right now. The last few weeks he's had
some minor physical ailments shows up and I thought I
could ‘BS' my way through it, but when forced to make a
decision I did what I did. He's the least sharpest of my four
left in the series right now, so I figured I might as well not
race him.”
This will mark the first time since 2008 that the
11-year-old gelding has not raced in the Levy final, a race
he won in 2009 and 2010.
"I knew when I did this he wasn't going to make the final.
It is what it is,” Burke said. “You have to do what's best for
the stable as a whole and, to be honest, what's best for
him. His week off should make a big difference. Now that
we're conceding the final we'll even discuss whether or not
we'll come back the following week.
"We might pass on it and restart his year like we did with
Sweet Lou last year. Things didn't work out for him in the
Levy and then giving him some time off we were able to get
him turned around. (Foiled Again) will let me know if he
wants to come back next week or if we want to restart the
year and move on."
Foiled Again began his year with a second-place finish in
a Levy leg and was third a week later. Last week, as the
6-5 favorite he finished a dull fifth.
"That was the most disappointed I have ever been in
him," Burke said.
Burke described Foiled Again's problems as minor and
said none are related to his age. He knows people will say
the veteran is finished, but he disagrees.
“More and more, I don't worry about it, what people say
about him," he said. "There will come a day when he's over
the hill. It's just not yet . What's wrong with him, it's the
same stuff any horse, any age, could have. There's nothing
serious wrong with him but I knew there was a problem.
The other day, that was the worst he's ever raced for us.
Then we found some things and saw that the bad race was
no big deal."
It has not been a good Levy series for Burke, who,
entering tomorrow night, has only one horse among the top
eight in the standings in Bettor's Edge. Ironically, he moved
Beach Memories, who is second in the standings, to the
Scott Di Domenico barn, because he felt he was
overstocked for the finals. He said he picked that horse to
move because he was not a part owner and is with his
other Levy horses.
"The Levy has been a disappointment so far but we've
got two more weeks," he said. "We'll get it going."
With a handful of horses having already clinched spots in

Gural Responds to Corey Johnson Story
In last week’s HRU, trainer Corey Johnson said he did
not use cobalt with his Breeders Crown starters Voelz
Hanover and Traceur Hanover and said, among other
things, that Gural’s saying he was guilty of using the drug
was merely a publicity stunt. Below is Jeff Gural’s reaction
to Johnson’s comments:
Corey Johnson shared his opinions on the high levels of
Cobalt detected in his 2014 Breeders Crown starters in last
week's Harness Racing Update. I felt I should respond to
some of them in the interest of transparency.
Out-of-competition samples were taken by my
investigator on a total seventeen horses that raced in the
Breeders Crown at The Meadowlands last fall. All samples
are identified only by a number, the testing lab has no
information on who the trainer might be. The USTA and I
shared the cost of having those samples sent for evaluation
to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) where they use the
finest equipment available in the world. Johnson’s two were

Mr. Johnson has a history of positive tests in Canada for
TCO2 or milkshaking, which he categorized in the HRU
interview as “not major offences”. These offences were
major enough by the Ontario Racing Commission to have
resulted in a 13-month suspension starting November 17,
2014, a $5,000 fine and put on probation for two years. He
was also fined $1,000 for breaching his probation, as he
was serving time for a prior TCO2 violation. Johnson chose
not to appeal.
Those are facts.
Beyond that, he accused me of a number of
transgressions. I won’t respond to those other than to say
that I have been abundantly clear that cheaters are not
welcome at my tracks. The fact that his horse won a
Breeders Crown at my track made me feel sick, as I
imagine a horse injected with a toxic substance might feel.
For the record, since we began to test for Cobalt we've
taken samples on 121 horses resulting in 18 horses
returning levels above what the HKJC considers
acceptable. Several of those were over 100 nngs/ml and
one came back 1,100 (yes, that reads eleven hundred).
Eleven of those eighteen high readings came from the
same trainer, who is excluded from racing at my tracks.

A handle of $4,696,209 on Saturday, April 4 was the
largest handle of the Fall-Winter meet. The significant
handle was powered by a record-setting Jackpot Hi-5 pool
of $2,581,505 wagered into a carryover pool of $847,458
for a total of $3,428,963. More than $3 million was paid out
to horseplayers who had the winning Jackpot Hi-5
combination.
The single-race handle on the Jackpot Hi-5 dash on the
April 4 card of $2,966,808 set a new industry record for
largest single-race handle, while the Jackpot Hi-5 pool set a
record as the largest total for a single-pool.

Muscle Hills Tops Sires of Hambo Hopefuls
Muscle Hill hit a home run with a Hambletonian winner
Trixton in his first crop and he has a line-up of 34 male
eligibles to this year's Hambo that will try to make it two in a
row.
Muscle Hill, now only nine years old, leads the list of male
Hambletonian eligibles with the son-and-father team of
Donato Hanover, with 25 eligibles , and Andover Hall with
23, ranking in second and third place respectively.
After the top trio comes Cantab Hall, leading trotting sire in
North America least year. He has 18 Hambo hopefuls. He
is followed by Muscle Massive(14), Credit Winner(11), and
Yankee Glide(10). They are the only trotting stallions in
double figures.
Of these top stallions, Muscle Hill, Andover Hall, and
Yankee Glide are the only ones that have sired
Hambletonian winners. Muscle Hill sired Trixton; Andover
Hall sired Donato Hanover; and Yankee Glide sired
Glidemaster.

Matzka compiled a separate list of the leading sires of 2015
Hambo Oaks fillies. The leading stallions are the same
three: Muscle Hill, Donato Hanover, and Andover Hall---all
ties for the lead with 10 filly hopefuls.
Consider that Muscle Hill had 82 registered foals in 2012
and that 44 of them have been sustained to the sport's
greatest trotting events. That's a remarkable feat
considering that some of those 82 foals have surely been
exported and that five of his 2012 foals died before last
July.
In addition to Trixton 3, 1:50.3 ($947,057), Muscle Hill's
top first-crop stars were E L Titan, Southwind Spirit, and
Muscle Network.
His top colt from last season was Muscle Diamond, a
1:53.4 winner last season for popular trainer Brett Bittle. It's
not surprising that Bittle would take a shine to this colt
since he trained Muscle Diamond's mother Windylane
Hanover, winner of the Hambletonian Oaks and more than
$1.1 million in her career.
Ironically, perhaps the two most dangerous Hambo
hopefuls sires by Muscle Hill are the fillies Mission Brief
and Jolene Jolene. Fillies can, of course, cross gender
lines by skipping the Hambo Oaks and challenging the
males in the big dance. (Additional payments must be
made to make up the difference between the payments for
male and female Hambo eligibles.)No filly has won the
Hambletonian since the meteoric Continentalvictory in
1996.
Mission Brief, of course, startled the world of trotting last
fall when she won in 1:50.3 at Lexington with a 16 length
margin over her pursuers.
Like the little girl with the curl, when Mission Brief was
good, she was very, very good: she later won the breeders
crown by almost five lengths.
But when mission brief was bad she was horrid: she
raced in the goldsmith maid at 1-5 odd and she was
distanced after breakimg stride.
The muscle hill filly jolene jolene is another product of the
team jc trotting kindergarten as trainer jonas czernyson
developed and campaigned her to a promising season,
including a 1:52.1 score at the red mile.
(Jolene jolene is, of course, named after the wonderful dolly
parton song about an evil woman who tried to steal dolly's
husband. Trainer jonas czernyson's wife christine says
that the four-legged version has her evil ways, too.

background as his dam emilie cas el is a sister to the
famed "band of brothers" (conway, angus, and andover--all
with the surname hall).
Emilie cas el is a member of the vast maternal family
known as medio. This family is closely associated with the
early success of hanover shoe farms, and a half-century
ago this family was often casually called the "hanover
sisters" or the family of miss bertha c. The "hanover
sisters" designation stems from the fact miss bertha dillon
foaled daughters in 1926-27-29 and each one took a 2:00
trotting mark, an incomprehensible accomplishment during
