Lisa, a native Vermonter, has dedicated 36 years to education. After graduating from Castleton State College, she returned to her Alma Mata, Williamstown High School, in order to “give back”, a theme that guided her career – demonstrated by both her own community contributions as well as by the manner in which she influenced others to do the same. Lisa received her Master’s in Counseling from Johnson State College, and after serving two years as a school counselor at Spaulding High School, she was named the Director of Counseling – a tribute to her natural affinity for leadership and her commitment to service. She stayed in this position for 13 years where upon she was hired to be the Director of School Counseling here at Harwood Union. In her 10 years at Harwood, Lisa transformed the School Counseling Department; she updated the systems and re-focused services to be student-centered and family friendly. Lisa put her energy to ensuring every student had access to an educational program that fit his/her needs, promoted the successful completion of high school and prepared students for entry into college or career. Lisa was a scheduling wizard, who collaborated tirelessly with internal partners and outside agencies as necessary, to creatively schedule students and provide them, as needed, with opportunities to support both academic and personal development. In the words of one student, “Lisa inspired me to come to school at a time when I thought it had no purpose for me.” Lisa looks forward to riding her bicycle – perhaps across the country, and then to continue her identity of “giving back” by becoming a certified mental health disaster counselor and volunteering for organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Bon Voyage to Harwood’s Cultural Captain Article Adapted from Kianna Haskin’s Common Ground Interview Bonnie Westwater – Harwood’s Cultural Captain, lived in Spain until she was 8; her love for language and travel began at a very young age. She started her teaching career in Seattle, and then moved shortly thereafter to Flagstaff, Arizona, where she taught for fifteen years. Arizona was where she began to teach both French and Spanish at both the middle and the high school levels. Before Harwood, she taught at Montpelier Middle and High School. Bonnie has been teaching at Harwood for thirteen years. Bonnie has enjoyed teaching a wide range of students; however, she has a special place in her heart for 7th graders. She states, “When they come in everything is so new to them and they’re so excited. Sometimes I tell my colleagues that it’s almost like having kindergarteners.” She also enjoys her seniors and advanced Spanish classes too, “I like the maturity and I like the advanced material of the upper level classes. I can communicate with them, and vice versa, and I get excited to see them graduate, where they are going to go and where life is going to take them, and if they are using language in their studies. Most of these students I have taught for four years, so there is a strong connection.” Bonnie loves it when students get excited about language. “It is such a great feeling when students are able to communicate in a different language,” she adds, “Students are fortunate to have so many electives and core classes. I think they have wonderful opportunities here. Bonnie will miss her students and her colleagues the most, but is looking forward to her new life phase. Over the last few years, Bonnie has extended her learning and shared her professional language expertise with others. She has traveled to Cuba and Costa Rica with educators from Vermont. “I would like to keep traveling and learning when I retire. Her plans expand a horizon of opportunities including working for a travel company, or an organization that sponsors travel for seniors or gap year students. She may also tutor at GMVSI, continue exploring her interest in the Comprehensible Input methodology (story telling) and teaching it to adults or teach English in a Spanish speaking country. For Bonnie, it is a world wide open. Fall Sports Registration: Registration for all Harwood High School and Middle School fall sports is now open! All signups are online at FamilyID.com.
