Cooking with Numbers: The Magic Recipe for Donna
Donna Cook is a long time middle school math teacher, recognized for both her compassion and
her ability to make students learn math. Donna’s career has spanned over 30 years. It began as
a series of position around the Eastern United States while her husband finished his education.
After moving to Vermont, she took a hiatus from teaching to raise her children. She returned to
Harwood as the 7th grade math teacher in 1994. In 1996, she was re-assigned to Crossett Brook
Middle School, and after 9 years there, she was back at Harwood Union Middle School for her final
10 years.
Donna is a true middle level educator; that is she loves teaching math to this age group. After a
moment of looking out the window, she turned and looked at me with a sparkle in her eye, “I love
math – it has purpose, and when I see the student (s) making sense of it, then there is no better
moment; its magical.”
Additionally, math learning keeps Donna “alive”. She feels learning and discovery – at any stage
of life, gives one “permission to never be done.” Undoubtedly this was never so true as it was
several years ago when the Supervisory Union adopted the Math Best Practices, a researched,
standards-based math program designed to engage learners in the conceptual understanding of
math. “It rocked my world,” she said. Despite the challenges of teaching math differently, Donna
embraced the methodology stating it liberated students, providing opportunities for them to take
charge of their math learning in a very collaborative and supportive environment.
Detail Donna, as her team knows her, also highlights the team approach in middle school, which
makes teaching this age group so appealing. My team is like family. It creates a nurturing, safe
environment, and every person contributes in his/her special way.
Donna looks forward to the next stage of her life. She won’t quit math; she intends to continue to
be a teacher mentor, while seeking opportunities to tutor or consult. In addition, she is looking
forward to spending time with her own family – especially her grandsons.

H Block: How Sweet It Is…
H-Block – the opportunity for students to pursue an interest, try something new and
connect with teachers in an alternative learning environment has been a great
addition to the Harwood Academic Program.
“Sugaring” is an H-Block activity that formed second semester. Students with various
degrees of interest and prior knowledge of the sugaring processes came together to
scout out sugaring locations on Harwood’s vast property. In addition, they have
been problem solving, designing and fabricating a sugaring arch. Students who had
taken Metals 1 and 2 previously at Harwood were able to apply their knowledge and
help younger students learn to weld and fabricate metal.
Using all donated parts, or whatever was laying around the shop, the group built a 2pan boiling unit that will be put into use during next year’s second semester HBlock. Upperclassmen will continue to lead the group next year through the sap
gathering and boiling process. It is the perfect opportunity for students with the
interest or desire to learn about the sugaring process, and other transferable skills.
And maybe, just maybe, there will be an H-block Cooking group willing to cook up
some pancakes for Harwood’s own syrup!

The Harwood Assembly band, AKA Nothing Quite Yet has won the 7 Days
contest - they will be playing at Grace Potters Grand Point North Festival
September12th 2015.
The band members are:
Nina Sklar, Eli Leppla, Colin Holter, Ben Burr, Ben Reed, Enzo Cormier,
Merrill Woodruff, Trevor McNeish, Harrison Russell.
With 1432 votes, they were 500 votes beyond the runner up.
They won over 50 bands that had entered, mostly professional Vermont acts
with well-established followings.
They are also performing at the fabulous Warren Vt 4th of July Street dance,
immediately following the parade, on the porch of the Warren Store. They are
splitting the bill with the Grippo Funk Band (GFB)

6K to Raise Money for Water.org

Harwood’s Interact Club will be sponsoring the Water.org 6K Trail Run or Walk to
raise money for Water.org. Water.org is a nonprofit organization whose mission
is to provide water and a toilet for all. Many countries around the world are in
need of a clean, safe water supply. Water.org goes into communities all over
the world to help educate people about the necessity of sanitation, build wells
with local community members, and teach the community how to maintain the
wells. Come Join Us...

The College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont

on Friday, June 12.

We are excited to announce that we are now offering the convenience of online Athletics and
Activity registration through our partner company, FamilyID (www.familyid.com).
FamilyID is a secure registration platform that provides you with an easy, user-friendly way to
register for our programs, and helps us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally
responsible. When you register through FamilyID, the system keeps track of your information in
your FamilyID profile so you enter your information only once for multiple uses, multiple family
members and multiple programs.
Before any student can participate in athletic programs (including tryouts) the following
requirements must be met:

A copy of the student’s most recent physical, signed by a physician, must be on file prior
to the first day of practice. Physicals expire 24 months from the date of the exam.
Students with expired physicals will not be permitted to participate in practices or games
until a new physical is turned in.
The parents/guardians are responsible for filling out the online form completely and
ensuring that any and all medical information concerning your child’s health, medical
concerns, injuries, medications and allergies are reported to the Athletic Department &
coaches
ALL students participating in athletics or activities must provide proof of insurance. If you
do not have insurance, contact Sue Duprat ([email protected]) for information on how to
obtain school insurance.

2. Sign Up for your secure FamilyID account by entering your family name, email address
and password. You will receive an email with a link to confirm your new account. (If you
don’t see the email, check your spam or junk folders.)

3. Click on the link in your email confirmation, which will log you in to FamilyID, and then
complete the information requested on the registration form. When you have completed
the form, click the "Save & Continue" button.
4. Review your registration summary and click "Confirm Registration" to submit. Once

also view your completed registration on your Dashboard. You can log into
https://www.familyid.com at any time to update your information and to check your
registration(s).
