Summer Sunday School
Summer Sunday School will begin on Sunday June
7th at 10:00 am. Children up to age 5 will gather in
Miss Vicki’s Pre-school room. Children age 6 to 12
will meet in the big Wild Things room upstairs for
Disney/Pixar movies with ties to Scripture. Youth
13+ are encouraged to assist in Miss Vicki’s class
or with the older kids upstairs.
Adults will meet in Room 101 and will begin the
summer with a study by Adam Hamilton exploring
“Faith as John Wesley Lived It.” The title of the
study is ‘Revival.’ The book to accompany the
study may be purchased, but is optional. It is $12
and is available in a large print or regular print.
Please let Judy know if you would like the book by
May 29th.
We will not have Sunday School on May 24th
(Memorial Day Weekend,) or May 31st.

Plan to attend the FUMC golf tournament on
Friday, May 29th at the Southern Hills Golf Course.
Shot gun start at 10am with registration and a

Thoughts from the Pastor’s Desk:
(Greater love has no one than this, that one lay
down his life for his friends. –John 15:13
Memorial Day was originally celebrated as
Decoration Day and it started at the end of the Civil
War as a day to honor the Union and Confederate
soldiers who died in the war. During the 20th
century, the holiday was set as the last Monday in
the month of May and signals the beginning of
Summer. The intent of this holiday is still to honor
those who sacrificed their lives in wartimes. The
idea of placing flowers on all the graves of those
who are dear to us began when someone
remembered how important the efforts were of
those who remained at home and put together the
instruments of battle for those soldiers fighting the
battles.
I have to admit that I grew up in an era where
serving in the military was not as popular as it had
once been. I have learned how soldiers are still so
willing to sacrifice their own life for the good of
others through news accounts, books and movies.
The times have changed and we find our country in
continuing battles and there are more heroes to
celebrate.
The idea of making a sacrifice out of our love for
those close to us is carried on by most parents. The
love for a child would drive most of us to make
such a final sacrifice for them. Perhaps that is why
it is so difficult for parents who have lost children
too early to overcome their grief.
At any rate, Memorial Day has become the
occasion for everyone to remember and reflect upon
the life of those who remain deep within our hearts.
I am sure to spend time reflecting upon family
members as most of you will do so this year. What I
encourage you to include in your time of memories
is the story that this line of scripture comes from.
Jesus was willing to lay down his life for those who
call themselves his friends. Jesus was not just a
relative or acquaintance or even a soldier. He was
God incarnate, come to earth to make the ultimate
sacrifice. It is that sacrifice that allows us to believe
death does not have the final word.
As you remember those who have made
sacrifices in life for you on this Memorial Day,
consider the One who did it for your ultimate gift of
peace. Remember, It’s all about Jesus! Pastor

Send Kids to Camp
Help FUMC children and youth experience the
wonders of God at one of the UMC camps in
Nebraska. Camp Scholarship donations may be
given to FUMC, and earmarked “Camp
Scholarship.” Currently, we have five youth
registered for camp, with several more hoping to go.
The average cost for camp is just over $300.

What a welcome surprise it was to see Pastor Sam
when I was in the hospital for an epidural. Thanks
much to the quilting ladies, who gave me a surprise
luncheon and to Alene Moore for bringing me
home. Thanks for the signature sheets, it was great
to read all the names, as I love my church family
