Volunteer Posting Hamilton/Burlington SPCA March 31, 2015 Position Title: Commitment: Accountability: Pet Visiting Volunteer 2-8 hours a month (minimum 2 hours/month which is one visit) Reports to Manager of Humane Education and Pet Visiting Pet Visiting volunteers provide children and youth with special needs, students and seniors with the opportunity to interact with animals in ways that promote learning and well-being. Volunteers and their pets or HBSPCA rabbits visit classrooms, student centres, long-term care homes, hospices, and hospitals. Pet Visitors Volunteer(s) with dog(s); the dogs to be assessed for visits at various facilities Pet must be a minimum of one year old and have proof of current vaccinations Pet must be spayed/neutered and be able to respond to basic commands Please visit www.hbspca.com/pet-visiting to view a list of the facilities we currently visit and our visit schedule This position will appeal to people who Are comfortable working with pet companion animals in the community and among strangers Enjoy volunteering independently Are available for a minimum of one visit a month Appreciate the well-being that animals inspire in people of all ages Key Responsibilities Visit designated facilities at scheduled times Acquaint clients with the pet companion animal (name of the animal, age, breed, gender, funny stories or habits) and answer any other questions they may have Engage individuals to meet, touch and interact with the animal Monitor and manage the animal's participation and interaction to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both people and animals Required Skills, Experience and Behaviours Successful pass of animal behavioral screening Understand basic animal behavior and recognize stress signals in dogs/rabbits Able to control pet through verbal command and/or hand signals Provide proof of current pet vaccinations annually 18 years of age or older Driver's licence and access to a vehicle If this position is of interest to you, please join one of two information sessions: Saturday April 11th at 11:00 am-noon Monday April 13th, 7:00 pm-8:00 pm Please RSVP to [email protected] and let us know which date you plan to attend.
