Lady Indians Make History
It feels amazing to know that we won state. To see my coach that excited, makes me happy. He said, “Tuck I have never
seen you smile so big before,” which made me feel even better. I love my team and coaches, we’re all family. (A. Tucker)
A Coach’s Pride
Holy Cross makes Super 25
To all Holy Cross Family & Friends:
Still reeling from the sweet taste of victory after
Sunday’s defeat of Allen-County Scottsville, Holy
Cross Lady Indians received yet another tremendous honor when it was announced Monday that
they are a part of the nations ‘Super 25’, a ranking
of the nations top high school basketball teams.
Our accomplishment hasn’t sunk in at all. But I do
know that each of you played a role in our success…what a phenomenal experience. Our kids are
amazing.
A single thank you for your support isn’t
enough…but the attached picture should provide a bit
more of an exclamation.
We are HC….We are #1.
Thank You & Go Indians
‘Super 25’ rankings are compiled by USA TODAY Sports’ Jim Halley, based on results, quality
of players and strength of schedule.

Congratulations!
This honor could not go to a more deserving group
of young women.

Covington Holy Cross Wins First State Championship
By: James Frakes (The Courier Journal)
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the
score tied at 32 and 19.6 seconds left in
the state championship game, coach Kes
Murphy drew up a play to get his Covington Holy Cross girls basketball team
the victory.Senior Abby Hassert, who
had gone scoreless in 25 minutes of
playing time, wasn’t exactly the top
choice to take the shot.
“I was none,” Hassert said of her scoring option on the play. “I knew I had to
get the ball to somebody to score.”
But with no other options open, Hassert
had to move. She got the ball near the
free-throw line, faked her defender into
the air, drove the right side of the lane
and scored the game-winning points
with 5.5 seconds left as the Indians beat
Allen County-Scottsville 35-32 in the
final of the Houchens Industries/
KHSAA Sweet 16 in front of 5,335 fans
at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Hassert was fouled on the play and
nailed the free throw to complete the
three-point play. After a pair of timeouts, Allen County-Scottsville had a
final shot to tie but Morgan Rich missed
from near halfcourt.
Murphy called Hassert – a 5-foot-9 post
who averages 4.9 points per game – a
player who “does all the dirty work.”
On Sunday, she cleaned up well.
“She made plays like that in the regional
tournament, so it wasn’t a surprise,”
Murphy said. “But in that moment, it
was a major surprise. Thank God she
had the courage to take that shot.”
No. 4 in the state in The CourierJournal’s Litkenhous Ratings, Covington Holy Cross (33-3) became the first
Ninth Region team to win a state championship and finished the season with a
22-game winning streak.
Holy Cross became the fourth team to
capture the All “A” Classic state title for
small schools and the KHSAA championship, joining Nicholas County (1993),
Hazard (1997) and Lexington Christian
(2007).
Hassert said the Indians relished their
underdog role, especially in a 41-40
upset of No. 1 Elizabethtown in Friday’s
quarterfinals.
“We wanted to lay low,” she said.
“We’ve been the underdogs our entire
season. That’s how we like to do it.
People underestimate us, and we do
what we do. We win games.”
(cont. on page 8)
Deja Turner, a Wright State University
signee, posted 13 points and five rebounds to lead Holy Cross and was
named the Sweet 16 MVP. Bellarmine
University signee Ally Mayhaus added
10 points and two blocks.
Rich, a University of Kentucky signee,
scored 20 points to lead the No. 12 Lady
Patriots (30-5), who were playing in
their first state final and had the majority of the crowd on their side.
Allen County-Scottsville shot 36.7 percent (11 of 30) and became the fourth
straight team to score 40 points or fewer
against Holy Cross in the tournament.
“The matchup zone is tough, but I
thought we got the scoring opportunities
we wanted,” Lady Patriots coach Brad
Bonds said. “We didn’t hit some shots
that normally we can make, but a lot of
that is due to the way they play. We
were in perfect position to win this basketball game. … They made a play, and
a lot of credit to them.”
The score was tied at 18 at halftime
before the Indians – led by six points
from Turner – opened the third quarter
with an 8-2 run for a 26-20 lead.
But the Lady Patriots battled back and
took a pair of leads in the fourth quarter,
going ahead 30-29 on Rich’s 3-pointer
with 3:09 left and 32-31 when Rich hit 2
of 3 free throws with 2:29 remaining.
Mayhaus hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie it a
32 with 1:09 left before Holy Cross’
Dajah McClendon made the defensive
play of the game, stealing the ball from
Rich with 32 seconds left.
“She’s our heart and soul,” Murphy said
of McClendon. “She has great instincts
and a phenomenal IQ.”
The Indians called a timeout to set up
the final play, which was intended to go
to Mayhaus in the paint. But with Mayhaus guarded and other options shut
down, Hassert had to make a play.
“I knew she had it in her, but I was very
surprised that she took it,” Turner said.
“She believed in herself enough to take
it and go for the win. It was great.”
Rich’s final shot from about 40 feet hit
off the backboard and fell to the floor,
sparking a Holy Cross celebration.
Murphy noted all three of his team’s
losses this season came with at least one
starter out because of a sickness or injury. But one thing that rarely was absent for the Indians was a stingy defense
that allowed just 37.8 points per game
all season.
“What you see with our defense, we
work on that every day to be perfect,” he
said. “People saw what we did, holding
people under their averages. That’s what
we expect to do.”

THE ‘BADDEST TEAM IN THE LAND’
Dan Hassert
You could measure the
unbelievable season of the 2014-15
state champion Holy Cross Indians
using a wide array of metrics: a 33-3
record … 22 wins in a row … wins
in six straight games over the state’s
No. 9, 3, 19, 1, 14 and 12 teams …
one of the top defensive averages in
the state … and of course possession
of the two most-coveted trophies in
Kentucky girls basketball.
But I measure their success
by other things. What was so impressive about these girls is not only
that they obviously scored more
points than their opponents but
HOW they went about doing it. It’s
clichéd to talk about a team’s heart,
spirit and courage. But those clichés
come alive with zest and meaning
when you detail exactly how this
team embodied those principles.
These girls played as an unselfish
team. They fought every second
they were on the court. And with
poise, professionalism and determination, they overcame obstacles all
year long: Injuries … sickness …
half-time deficits … skepticism
from afar … poor refereeing … a
brutal schedule that was the 6th most
difficult in Kentucky … long hotel
stays and bus rides to faraway places
(29 of 36 games on the road, including 16 on the far road) … unlucky
tournament pairings … cold shooting nights … half-court desperation
heaves by opponents … and closingsecond deficits that clenched everybody’s stomachs.
Every stomach, it seems, except for
those of the players.
In the three biggest games
of the year – the Kentucky All A
Classic state championship, the takedown of No. 1 and seemingly invin-
cible Elizabethtown and the end-ofyear Sweet Sixteen State Championship – the Indians hit last-second
shots to win each of those games.
It’s revealing that those three shots
were taken by three different girls.
Seniors. With their leadership …
their team play … their smooth confidence and firm belief … their careful execution of the strategies taught
by skilled coaches … and their willingness to forego the glory of scor-
ing to focus on defense, rebounding,
diving on loose balls, ball-handling
and forceful warfare in the post, the
2014-15 Holy Cross Lady Indians
cemented their reputation in the
memories and history books of not
just this school but also this entire
region as the baddest team in the
land.

A WORD FROM THE FANS
From Bluegrasspreps:
#Hittheboards19
Holy Cross has had an outstanding
year all year, from its very first
game when it went to a running
clock against Assumption in Louisville in the third quarter (58-23 with
half of A’s points coming in closing
minute against scrubs).
(Indiana A semi-finalist) by 9 and
losing to nationally
ranked Lawrence North (4A semifinalist) but giving them all they
could handle for 3 quarters. HC
was WITHOUT Deja Turner and
Dajah McClendon. Lawrence North
has four D-1 commits also.
Bell County averaged 65.6. Against
HC, 33.
6 – … finished 3-1 in the Lexington
Traditional Bank Classic at LexCath, beating Lincoln County, Sacred Heart and Allen CountyScottsville but losing to East
Carter without Deja Turner for most
of the tournament and with Dajah
M. playing hurt and with multiple
girls sick.
Murray, 64.6 a game and 46 against
HC.
This year, Holy Cross:
1 – … is 10-0 against top 20 teams
in the last Litkenhous ratings, and 12
-0 if you include No. 21 Sacred
Heart.
2 – … is 31-3 with ALL three losses
coming with multiple starters and
others hurt, sick and missing.
3 – … won the All A Classic by
beating (then) 17-4 Danville, 21-3
Clinton County, 16-6 Owensboro
Catholic and 22-2 Murray in five
days.
5 – …finished 3rd in the Roncalli
Lady Rebel Tournament in Indianapolis, beating Oregon-Davis
7 – … beat Holmes (No. 3 in the last
Litkenhous ratings) THREE times,
twice on their home court. Holmes
was 30-0 against everyone else.
And the defense? HC held 65.9 ppg
E-town to 40, but that's not unusual.
It holds teams to 38 a game.
Holmes averaged 68.5. Against HC
in three games: 40.
No. 9 Highlands averaged 62.
Against HC in two games: 35.5
Danville, 67.9 and 35 against HC.
Sacred Heart, 56.5 and 38.5 against
HC in two games.
My only point? This wasn’t a onegame performance for Holy Cross.
The Indians have been playing well
all year with a difficult schedule.
Oh, and only 7 of HC's 34 games
have been at home -- 27 "away,"
with 2 in Indianapolis, 2 in Bowling
Green, 5 in Lexington, 4 in Frankfort
and 1 in Louisville.

To the state champs - imagine a get
together of people in their 20s and
30s, men and women, sitting around a
tv watching high school girls' basketball. And not only that, they were on
the edge of their seats cheering on a
team they weren't even acquainted
with, out of a state that they didn't
even live in. WHAT?! Yes, this was
my weekend. Unfortunately I was
unable to watch the games in person,
but you best believe I was tuned in
states away, and it was awesome to
see tiny Holy Cross High School
cause so much excitement! All you
ladies are very talented but more importantly, you played with heart and

Thank you lady's for such a fun filled
and exciting weekend. My wife and
students thank you since I now have no

see you represent the school in such a
positive way weather it was your
sportsmanship, or the way you worked
your way through the tournament on a
mission. You always carried yourselves in a way that made me very
proud of you. You are champions for
what you did on the court and to me
you are champions for who you are.
You make me proud to be an indian

carry this with you the rest of your

I can still remember back in the early

State semi-finals and the papers referred to us as the "little school with
the big heart." We watched in awe
as our Lady Indians exemplified that

way. Every day is a great day to be

your tremendous victories, but you
have brought an entire community

The last 4 minutes in the stands were
excruciating. I was hoping the refs
would be kind to us and not call a ticky
tack foul and give Allen County an
advantage. And I didn't want the ball
in #11 Morgan Simpson's hands. I
thought to myself," No 3's...she was
the one to stop, she had 30 of the
team's 32 points". But when it got
down to the last few seconds and Abby
scored and then swished the free
throw, I had tears in my eyes, I couldn't believe it. I am so happy for the
team and the community of Holy
Cross. I am always proud to be a Holy
Cross Indian and on Sunday 3/15, I
was even prouder!

doubt we came out with two
states championships. Again, I
want to thank everyone for
their support!

Lil D and Hanny, I have enjoyed
watching you two grow from 7 year
old brats to very impressive basketball
players and even better very dedicated
friends and teammates. I love u too.
~Amy Turner
Just wanted to say how proud I am of
all the work these girls have done this
year. You deserve everything you got.
Love you Lexi.
~Kathy Riep
I got chocked up as the time ran out; I
never dreamed our small school could
accomplish such an amazing feat. The
girls made me proud to be a Holy
Cross Indian.
~Jennifer Ives Ehlman, Class of ‘86
From each point on the scoreboard
and to every thrilling turnover, the
Holy Cross’s Girls Basketball team
left all of their fans in awe at their
astonishing performance. The girls
and their coach worked harder that
humanly possible, and went above and
beyond every one of our expectations.
They gave us a championship game
that we can never forget; that the
world can never forget!
There is absolutely no way to put into
words the rush of emotions fans felt as
senior Abby Hassert scored the game
winning points! However it is truly a
no-brainer that this victory was a team
effort. Through leadership, good
sportsmanship, and the bond of friendship, the girls pulled together to bring
home to Northern Kentucky for the
first time ever, the KHSAA Sweet 16
State Title.
~Catherine Ehlman
It was surreal and so exciting. All I
could think was, there is absolutely no
one across the whole state of Kentucky
who is better. I couldn’t believe a
Holy Cross team was the first from
Northern Kentucky to have gone all
the way, and I was so proud to be a
part of this amazing school.
~Holy Cross Alumna
Congratulations on the Holy Cross
Girls State Championship! I couldn’t
believe it when I saw that they had
won. It is truly amazing!
~Randy Ives, Class of ‘78
My experience at the game was crazy.
Especially being able to cheer it and
watch from courtside was amazing.
Being able to watch the girls grow this
season was the best thing ever. Seeing
all the hard work definitely paid off.
