We are so excited to welcome Gabrielle Hamilton back to Heart’s Delight for another year! She opened Prune in 1999, “to cook for [her] neighbors,” But her success attracted food lovers from all over the borough, the city and the state, as well as other chefs and food writers. “Enchanted,” wrote Frank Bruni in The New York Times in 2005, “it is easy to see why Prune is so widely and fervently loved. It has mirth to spare, moxie to burn. It listens to its own muse and operates by a credo of whimsical indulgence.” Spend an evening at NBC Studios with two VIP tickets to “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” home to A-list celebrity guests, memorable comedy, and topical monologue jokes. It is hosted by Emmy Award-winning writer and one of the 2014 TIME 100, Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, Seth Meyers. Previously, Meyers served as head writer on “Saturday Night Live” and anchor on the show’s wildly popular “Weekend Update.” An established comedian, Meyers is known for his perfectly-timed wit and off-the-cuff satire. Meyers’ fellow “Saturday Night Live” cast member and friend Fred Armisen serves as lead guitarist for the house band,”8G Band With Fred Armisen.” 273 It has been a few years since Chef Bill Telepan has been at Heart’s Delight and it is such a treat to have him join us this year! The lucky winner of this lot will head to the Upper West Side to this cozy farm-to-table American-style restaurant for a four course dinner with wine from Chef Bill Telepan. In the 2014 Michelin Guide, Telepan was awarded a Michelin Star! One of New York’s first and most acclaimed devotees of “greenmarket cooking,” utilizing the freshest ingredients from local markets, Bill Telepan is committed to showcasing the season’s bounty through his cuisine. You are in for a treat with his simple and balanced approach to cooking! Zac Young is always creative with his auction lots and this year is no exception. This year he presents you with the option for Breakfast in Bed with Zac, a once-in-a-lifetime (most likely) opportunity to have breakfast brought to your hotel by Chef Zac Young himself. Or you can choose dinner for two at David Burke Kitchen located in the James Hotel. The open kitchen and glass-enclosed wine cave allow guests a peek behind the scenes. The carving station, where a variety of meats are carved and whole-roasted fish, lobster and casseroles are plated, sits in the center of the dining room. After dinner, venture upstairs for drinks at the rooftop bar Jimmy with stunning views of all of Manhattan. Either way you can’t go wrong! Continue your time in the Big Apple with a two night weekend stay in a superior room at the New York Palace. With a nod to its illustrious past, The New York Palace has taken an ambitious leap into the future. The Palace – a legendary New York City luxury hotel – underwent a thorough transformation from a historic Madison Avenue gem to Midtown’s premier modern hotel. The hotel’s famed Villard Mansion built in 1882 is recognized as a New York City Landmark and gracefully blends with the contemporary 55-story tower. Chef Jamie Bissonnette is back for his second Heart’s Delight and since the last time he was with us he has opened up Toro in New York in addition to the one in Boston. Sit down for a chefs tasting menu dinner in the cavernous dining room on the outskirts of New York City’s meatpacking district. Rows of cured Spanish hams are hung high in the rafters, and industrial architecture is balanced by simple, but modern rustic décor. Chef Bissonnette is a champion of nose-to-tail cuisine and is wellknown locally and nationally for his exceptional charcuterie and passionate dedication to supporting local, sustainable purveyors. According to USA TODAY Travel, Beauty & Essex is among one of New York City’s biggest secrets. Hidden behind a pawn shop storefront in the Lower East Side, they are known for their pink ladies room with complimentary bubbly and Champagne brunches. While the décor is feminine with features like a massive chandelier, everyone can enjoy the shared small plates from lobster or tuna tacos to red velvet waffles for brunch. They are about as close to viticultural nirvana I have ever seen” -Robert Parker Julie Johnson from Tres Sabores is joining us for her first Heart’s Delight and she is inviting the lucky winner of this lot to join her for a two-night stay at the ranch (two couples) and also a tour & tasting for four guests. Full-bodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). This exquisite as well as prodigious 2010 can be drunk young, but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Bravo!” Donated by: Reginald Brown 2 - bottles Château d’Yquem 1983 estimated value: $1,000 4 The 1983 d’Yquem has racked up some big scores - 98 points from the Wine Spectator, 96 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and 18.5 out of 20 points for Jancis Robinson. Wine Spectator writes, “Super-intense and full-throttled, elegant and stylish.” Robert Parker writes, “The 1983 is enormous, with huge, honeyed, pineapple, coconut, and caramel flavors, massive extract, and an unctuous quality barely framed by acidity and new oak. The wine has changed little since bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2050.” Jancis Robinson writes, “Barley sugar and such life! Vibrant. So fresh... Yummy.” The experts are all in agreement so bid high today! Donated by: Riea and Steve Lainoff 278 Bon Voyage! There are plenty of good reasons to stay at Relais & Chateau hotel member Château Cordeillan-Bages, parts of which date back to the 17th century. There’s the rather funky interior by French-Italian designer Anne-Monique Bonadei. Then there are the individually decorated guest rooms (28 in total) the swimming pool in the garden, and the intimate ambience. As it is just a few miles from Pauillac, CordeillanBages makes a great base for touring the Medoc, visit Château Pichon-Longueville (three minutes’ drive south) or Château Mouton-Rothschild (10 minutes’ drive north). Jean Luc Rocha’s two-Michelin-star food is another good reason! Château Haut Bergey has a long history in Bordeaux dating all the way back to the 15th century. In 1991, Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, the granddaughter of a well-known Bordeaux wine merchant, bought Haut Bergey and turned the Pessac Leognan estate 279 around. Today, the Pessac Leognan estate is managed by Helene Garcin Levesque and they will welcome you for a tour, tasting and lunch. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Château accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth.” Donated by: Riea and Steve Lainoff 1982 Bordeaux from the Cellar of Mark Kuller estimated value: $3,000 7 1 - bottle Château Latour 1982 1 - bottle Château Cheval Blanc 1982 This lot is very special to us as it comes from Max Kuller in honor of his father, Mark Kuller who passed away last year. Mark was a long-time friend of Heart’s Delight and involved since the beginning 16 years ago. He chaired the auction committee a couple of times, donated his beloved wine to the auction and helped in so many ways – too many to count. He was a larger than life personality and a true force. We were honored to have known him for many wonderful years and he meant so much to so many – his loss is felt dearly. The lot that Max selected is perfect to represent his dad because it is the crème de la crème for Bordeaux and a stand out vintage! And many critics panned the resulting wines. The Wine Advocate’s vintage chart gives just 78 points to North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon in 2011. At best, other critics were lukewarm on the wines. I’m certain, though, the Napa Valley’s best offerings from 2011 will one day achieve greatness. The vintage certainly didn’t produce ripe, powerful wines. But I’ve found that over the long term, Napa’s cooler vintages are more likely to produce elegant, balanced, complex wines. And now that these wines have had a few years in bottle, they’re really starting to reveal themselves.” -David White, Heart’s Delight Auction co-Chair and founder and editor of Terroirist.com Donated by: David White, Molly Christhilf, Carly Maher, Joel Kleinman, John Brooks, Maureen Nelson, Gil Guarino, Cyrus Hazzard, and MacArthur Beverages 287 Wine Country Excursion to the Beautiful Willamette Valley estimated value: $6,800 12 American Airlines – Two First Class Tickets Domaine Serene Three Night Stay at their Private Guesthouse for Two Couples + VIP Tour & Tasting Brooks Winery Tour, Tasting and Four Case Custom Blending! This 26 bottle lot includes some of their favorite bottles and why they selected them. It is a very special lot and we are so thankful for their support in so many ways. Grant Baker 1 - bottle Anderson Family Vineyard Pinot Noir 2008 From the great 2008 vintage, this Dundee Hills tiny producer, Cliff Anderson, handcrafts his wines. Enjoy! Sean Ballington 1 - bottle Ventana Cabernet 2000 This is an underrated little gem of a Cabernet and one of my first from California many years ago. It is not a thick fruit bomb but has some of those characteristics. It is drinkable and balanced with a light chalk nose and fruit. It may become delicate so drink up now. Erich Broksas 1 - bottle Cheval des Andes 2008 I first tried this wine in Mendoza and it always brings back great memories of the lovely wines, beautiful scenery, and incredible people. Plus it is fun since it is a project with Cheval Blanc. John Brooks 1 - bottle NV Nathalie Falmet Brut Nature Blanc de Noir My wine resolution is to buy wine from people (not box stores) made by people (not conglomerates). This brilliant wine purchased from a local wine shop is an example of why. James Cahill 1 - bottle Jospeh Phelps Insignia 1997 This is the bottle and vintage of wine where I had my wine epiphany. I was at a celebration dinner for a large real estate transaction that we closed and my boss, who is a xenophile noticed that this highly regarded wine was on the restaurant wine list for a nominal price. He said that it was either mispriced by accident or they did not really have it and they would bring out another vintage of wine. We ordered, the waitstaff brought out the 1997 and the rest is history. It was a fantastic wine and not like any other wines that I have had. 292 Molly Christhilf 1 - bottle J.Lasalle Cuvee Speciale Club Premier Cru Millesime Brut 2004 I am going to do the 2004 Lassalle Special Club Brut 2004 because Kermit Lynch holds a very special place in my heart and there is no better way to celebrate life than popping a cork and sharing Champagne with those you love. I chose Lassalle because of their twenty-eight-year tradition of “une femme, un esprit, un style” (one woman, one spirit, one style) which shows resilience and defeatable spirit which I hope to emulate in my life. In the 1970s, Kermit was the first to begin importing artisanal, grower champagne, and the Lassalles have been in the KLWM portfolio longer than anyone (There are so many great wines that mean so much to me it’s hard to choose one, but the most important thing is to share them with friends, family and those closest to your heart) Lily and Scott Claffee 1 - bottle Battenfeld-Spanier Kirchenstück Spätburgunder GG 2009 In August 2012, we traveled to Germany, visiting the wine regions of the Mosel Valley, the Nahe, and the Rheinhessen. We drank mostly Riesling, of course, but one of the most surprising, and pleasing, wines of the trip was this amazing Pinot Noir (or Spatburgunder, as the Germans call it). This wine is designated a “GG” (the equivalent of a grand cru), and is made using old-school methods, including aging in large wood barrels, allowing the terroir to show through. The young winemaker, Hans Olivier Spanier, is a rising star, and is obsessed with making what he calls “authentic” wines. Please enjoy this little memento of our trip and see for yourself that Germany is about more than just Riesling! Susan Grais 1 - bottle The Ojai Vineyard Melville Syrah 2007 Syrah and Petite Syrah are among my favorite varietals - always wonderful to contrast and compare. Gil Guarino 1 - bottle Château Calon-Segur Marquis de Calon 1995 My favorite Appellation is St. Estephe and like 1995. Great earthiness and depth. Doug Heye 1 – bottle Château Musar blanc 2004 In honor of the recently departed Serge Hochar, a hero, not just for making exciting, idiosyncratic wines (the white is a blend of Merwah and Obaideh), but for making those wines during war-torn Lebanon and missing only one vintage since 1972. William Holby 1 - botttle Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Toscana 2001 This was the first really expensive bottle of wine I ever bought for myself when I got promoted into management at Calvert Woodley. Been saving it for a special occasion and this seems like a good one! Brian Kearney 1 - bottle Bond Estates Pluribus 2006 Bond is one of my favorite wineries of all time and Pluribus was one of the first of their wines I tasted. I immediately realized how amazing California wines could be and was inspired to start my own winery, Addax. 293 Conrad Kenley 1 - bottle Conrad Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Because I made it! Joel Kleinman 1 - bottle Château Lynch-Bages 2000 We drank four vintages of Lynch Bages at dinner the night we got married on the spur of the moment. So this château has always been close to our “hearts.” Tom Madrecki 1 - bottle Domaine Mark Angeli Ferme de la Sansonniere La Lune 2011 While cooking at Noma in Copenhagen, the importer for many of the city’s top restaurants introduced me to this wine and its maker- kick starting a career and dream in wine. It was the “beginning.” Carly Maher 1 - bottle Pol Roger Extra Cuvée de Réserve Champagne This was the wine we used to announce our pregnancy: we featured Pol Roger on the left side of the photo and a baby bottle on the right! “Popping bottles will look a little different in 2015 - Baby Maher joins the party this summer!” Maureen Nelson 2 - 375 ml Château Climens 2003 My favorite Bordeaux. Elizabeth Penttinen 1 - bottle Alex Elman Bin 721 NBM Alex (winemaker) was in my local wine shop in Arnold with her seeing eye dog named “General” she became blind in her 20s and has built an empire – very inspirational. Eric Platt 1 - bottle Santa Duc “Les Grancières” Gigondas 2007 This wine reminds me of my very first visit to France in 1998. I was waiting for French importer Bobby Kacher at the time. This trip and the visit to the small village of Gigondas opened my eyes to the wonderful world of wine. Michael Sands 1 - bottle Château Leoville Barton 1988 I was given this bottle by owner Anthony Barton after having it with a meal at his home. It might not have received great scores from the press, but the wine was (and is) showing beautifully. Jeff Schragg 1 - bottle Bodegas el Nido Clio 2008 This was my first introduction to a wonderful Spanish wine. 294 Jarad Slipp, MS 1 - bottle Dukchorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot 2012 1 - bottle RdV Vineyards Lost Mountain 2010 The Duckhorn is the wine that got me into red wines when I was 17 on a date in Santa Fe. The RdV is the wine that keeps me loving wine as I am the Estate Director there. David White 1 - bottle Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Pomarium Estate 2011 I’ll never forget my first experience with Peay Vineyards. It was November 14, 2008, and I was dining at the French Laundry. When I told my server that I loved wines from the extreme Sonoma Coast, he asked if I’d ever tried the Pinots from Peay Vineyards. When I confessed that I hadn’t, he brought over a bottle Peay’s 2006 “Pomarium Estate” Pinot Noir. It was the purest expression of Pinot Noir I’d ever encountered, and at that moment, I became a lifelong ambassador for the winery. Sebastian Zutant 1 - bottle Frank Cornelissen Munjebel Bianco Made completely natural with no sulphur. This dude is the rebirth of slick, his wines are unique and elegant and full of complexity. A blend of vineyards and varietal, the wine is salty, aeromatic, tannic and incredibly versatile with foods. As well, only 18 bottles came to DC and I own all of them. This wine is unlikely to be seen again. Heart’s Delight Bordeaux Collection 16 295 estimated value: $2,000 24 bottles from the 2012 vintage and select earlier vintages. This is a unique collection of a bottle from the wines that were tasted during today’s Master Class and our friends from Bordeaux. We invited all of the winemakers to bring an older vintage of their choosing (in addition to the 2012 vintage) and discuss both during the tasting - the high bidder on this lot will be the lucky benefactor of some great surprises from the generous winemakers.
