Chorus with Grace Renaud
Few things are as inspiring as hearing the soaring sounds of a joyful chorus. Raise your
voice with conductor Grace Renaud in this fun and invigorating chorus class. Grace will
bring in a handful of choral selections that are sure to please: “Cecilia” / Simon & Garfunkel,
“Lean On Me” /Bill Withers, “You've Got a Friend” /James Taylor, the theme from New York, New
York (“Start spreading the news”...), with other selections by Motown artists, the Beatles, and your
Broadway favorites!
Staged Reading Lab: Chekhov Improvised! with Bruce Bierman
Campers will read The Good Doctor—a comedy by Neil Simon based on the delightful short
stories of Anton Chekhov. Then, actors will put down their scripts and begin creating characters and perform improvised scenes based on the play. The class will emphasize creating
character, analyzing scenes, and sharpening improvisation skills—without ever having to
memorize a single line.
Ukulele with Jeannie McKenzie
Learn to tune, play chords, strum, pick and accompany yourself on songs! We'll be playing
the blues as well as some of your favorite songs on ukuleles. This class (and a bit of practice
will give you the foundation you need for countless hours of musical entertainment!

Word For Word with Jeri Lynn Cohen
Read it. Jam it. Break it down. Read a short story and take it from the page to the stage the
Word for Word way. We will play games and stage a short story in its entirety, playing all the
characters and learning how to make the narrative part of the action.
Physical Theatre with Joan Mankin
Create improvisational theatre rooted in the body by expanding your expressive range—
imaginatively and spontaneously to whatever presents itself. Each class will include a
physical and vocal warm up, as well as targeted skill building exercises.
Personal Storytelling with Jeanne Haynes
Learn how to take your personal memories, scattered thoughts and ramblings and turn them
into powerful, bite-size, touching “Personal Stories.” We will first identify the inciting incident
– the “what” of your story. Then working with the basics of who, where, when, and all the
delicious details, we will focus on story structure. We will learn how to “plant before pruning,”
to enjoy the rich experience of story gardening .

Telling Stories to Children with Kirk Waller
In this class we will reach into our magic bag and learn how to tell enchanting tales to young
children (pre-k to school age). Whether it is for your grandchildren or children in a classroom or
assembly setting, this week will be great fun. You can be a kid again and hear stories AND
learn how to tell engaging stories to children. This class will focus on: managing fleeting imaginations!, interactive storytelling, call and response, puppets, finger play stories and more.
Broadway Dance with Bruce Bierman
Put on your dancing shoes, we'll break it down slow and easy and enjoy the classic moves and
grooves from some of the greatest Broadway choreographers including Michael Bennett—
creator of A Chorus Line and Dreamgirls. Also, enjoy an invigorating Broadway dance warm
up to get our joints jumping.
Monologues with Nancy Carlin
In this class we will work on short (1-2 minute) monologues of all kinds. Prepare monologues for
auditions or for fun. Classical or contemporary. Bring in your own and/or I will provide.
Character Development with Andy Sarouhan
Using a wide spectrum of theatre exercises, this class will explore the various "seeds" to
character creation. We will experiment with growing characters externally (posture,
movement, face and voice) and internally (emotions, objectives, and status). Through play,
we'll discover that there are countless different people just waiting within for a chance at
expression!
Vocal Technique for Healthy Singing with Ellen Robinson
Have fun exploring your voice and developing more control while singing. Proper breathing
and support will allow you to hold notes longer without running out of air, enable you to
sing higher and lower, help you match pitch more accurately, and prevent you from getting
tired or hoarse when you sing. Would you like to determine your vocal range or know how
to find the right key for a song so it’s in the best range for you? Get answers to these questions and more as we play with vocal exercises, singing games and group singing.

Scene Work Acting with Marge Betley
Join Stagebridge Executive Director Marge Betley in an investigation of the actor’s process in
scene work. Explore objectives, strategies, text analysis, and how to make strong choices as
you do hands-on work in scenes from contemporary plays. Marge will select scenes and make
casting assignments. All levels welcome!
Life Review with Amy Gorman
Get moving writing down those stories of your life in a safe supportive place and have fun with
prompts, while you challenge your memories and share your tales. Positive comments only;
this is not a writing course, just a jump-start to getting your stories down on paper. Take a
chance and get to know yourself better!
Improv with Andy Sarouhan
A common misconception about improvisation is that it relies on some innate natural talent
bestowed upon the few; many believe that improvisors are simply
born funny or quick or creative. In reality, the skills that allow groups of people to instantaneously create something wonderful onstage are actually some of the most universal of human
traits: awareness, listening, flexibility, empathy, cooperation, and playfulness. In this 4-day
course, we will play games and exercises that help us to hone these skills and give us an opportunity to re-experience the joys of creative play. Students will gain a greater understanding of
the mechanics of spontaneous theatre, as well as how these same skills relate to our day-to-day
lives.
Tap (Beginning) with Debbie Sternbach
Have you always wanted to try tap dancing, but just “never got around to it?” Well, now’s
your chance! Join Debbie Sternbach for a joyous, beginning tap dance class. Learn how to
shuffle-off-to-Buffalo, flap-ball change, and impress your friends!
Learn a Fred Astaire step and an Eleanor Powell rhythm walk. Come be inspired, have fun
and “get rhythm in your feet and music in your sole.”

Learn how to present yourself on stage with hair and make-up tips from a pro in the trades!

Biographies
Marge Betley, Executive Director at Stagebridge, has worked with arts organizations around the country
including Sundance Institute Theatre Lab, Houston Grand Opera, Denver Center Theatre’s New Play Summit,
Arena Stage, the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, Opera News magazine, and the National Endowment for the Arts
(NEA). Under her leadership of their new works program, Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York developed
over 150 new plays and musicals by professional and amateur playwrights and produced more than a dozen world
premiere productions. She has served as a grants panelist for the NEA, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre,
and the Rockefeller Foundation/MAP Fund. A graduate of Washington College, Marge is a former Fulbright Scholar in Dramaturgy.
Bruce Bierman
has been a member of the Stagebridge company since 2007, serving as teacher, director
and choreographer. Most recently, he directed Tomas and the Library Lady. Other productions with Stagebridge include Sylvia starring Joan Mankin with original music by Scrumbly Koldewyn, Chicken Sunday, and City Green. Bruce wrote and directed the award-winning, gender-bending flamenco musical Passion of
Carmen at the Celebration Theatre, and wrote and performed his first solo show, The Blue Dress, for the New
Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco (Dean Goodman Award). Acting credits include St. Joan (South Coast
Repertory), Titus Andronicus (Shakespeare Santa Cruz), Richard in Richard II (Powerhouse), Fortune and
Men’s Eyes (Coast Playhouse), The Snow Maiden and The Nightingale and the Rose (24 St. Theatre).
Amy Bobeda
Assistant Costume Shop Manager / Assistant Designer—Berkeley Rep
Jeri Lynn Cohen has been a Charter Member of Word for Word Performing Arts Company for 18 years,
originating roles in over a dozen of their productions. She has appeared throughout the Bay Area at A.C.T.,
Aurora Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Campo Santo, Marin Theatre Company, Magic Theatre, San Jose
Stage Company, and she has toured internationally with both the San Francisco Mime Troupe and Word for
Word Performing Arts Company.
Nancy Carlin is a director, actor, writer, producer, text and vocal coach, and acting teacher. A former company member of the American Conservatory Theater, Nancy is an associate artist with the California Shakespeare
Theater and a member of PlayGround. She has performed and directed extensively in regional theatres, including
the A.C.T., Berkeley Rep, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, San Jose Rep, TheatreWorks, and the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival. A theatre arts lecturer for UCSC, Nancy holds a BA in comparative literature from Brown University and
an MFA in acting from A.C.T.

Biographies
Amy Gorman Having worked in healthcare and the arts all her life, Amy’s current interests are a dynamic
synthesis of both fields. As a medical social worker in the S F Bay Area and as Director of Kidshows, a non-profit
organization introducing children to live theatre, music, dance and storytelling, she is currently facilitating groups
for seniors in Guided Autobiography, a creative approach to Life Review. She is author of the award-winning book,
Aging Artfully which grew out of four years interviewing dozens of women over the age of 85 who identified themselves as artists. The film, Still Kicking, follows 6 of the women, all over 90. She spoke to many groups about creative aging and toured the country for several years after writing the book, showing the film at 14 conferences and
film festivals.
Jeanne Haynes
could be described as a “Stagebridge Poster Child.” Inspired by a Stagebridge storytelling
seminar 17 years ago, she abandoned her media relations consulting business to become a full time performer and
teacher. Originally a news reporter, she tells both traditional and personal stories. As a solo performer she is
currently at work on her fifth theatre production. Venues include The Marsh San Francisco and Berkeley, Brava!,
SF Theater Festival, Julia Morgan Theatre. Ashby Stage and Bay Area Storytelling Festival. She has taught
300+ adults in ongoing Stagebridge Oakland classes and 3,000 students as a schools artist in
residence.
Joan Mankin
has performed with A.C.T., the Center Theatre Group (LA), California Shakespeare Theater,
San Diego Repertory Theatre, Marin Theatre Company, SF Playhouse, Magic Theatre, Aurora Theatre,
TheatreWorks, in the 2012 Stagebridge premiere of Counter Attack! and as Sylvia in the Stagebridge production of
Sylvia’s Advice on How to Age Gracefully on the Planet Denial. She has been a company member of several leading
Northern California physical theatre ensembles, including the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the Pickle Family Circus, and Dell’Arte International. Film credits include appearances in Bee Season, Made in America, and Desert
Hearts.
Jeannie McKenzie
After a 15-year career as a massage therapist and mime artist, Jeannie McKenzie
found her way into the world of Orff Schulwerk and became a music teacher. She taught at Julia Morgan School
for Girls in Oakland for 6 years, then at Windrush School in El Cerrito for 4 years. She is also a certified Biodynamic Cranial-Sacral therapist and continues her studies in embryology and nervous system “Settling.” Jeannie
plays violin, cello and ukulele for various projects and is realizing her dream of becoming a beekeeper and goat
herder on her urban farm in Oakland. She currently teaches ukes to the Elementary Music Students at CCJDS.
Jeannie is delighted to be offering an ukulele class to the Stagebridge community!
Benjamin Pither
Benjamin is a professional actor and theatre educator. He currently teaches Musical Theatre and Acting at both the New Conservatory Theatre Center and at Berkeley Playhouse. He has worked as a drama
teacher at several schools in the Bay Area, including Park Day School in Oakland and SF School of the Arts. He
served as the Theatre Arts Director for three years at Camp Swig and Camp Newman. Benjamin was trained as a
theatre educator when he was selected as a Steven Spielberg Fellow in 2001 and he has performed with Center Rep,
Berkeley Playhouse, Willows Theatre, 42nd St Moon, Custom Made Theatre, Altarena Playhouse, Berkeley Rep, Cal
Shakes, the Playwrights’ Foundation, and the Playwrights’ Center of SF.

Biographies
Grace Renaud is a Bay Area native with a Masters in Pipe Organ Performance & Literature from Mills College,
Oakland. She is the Director of Music at MCC-SF, which is an inclusive church in the Castro, and has a private piano
& voice studio. She is delighted to be directing the wonderful Stagebridge Chorus. In her free time, Grace loves to
spend time with her four young children.
Ellen Robinson
Jazz vocalist, composer, and educator Ellen Robinson has worked with literally thousands of students
throughout her life. Her musical journey has led her through many genres: folk, rock, bluegrass, cabaret, musical
theatre, a cappella, and jazz. Ellen is a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing and is a gifted and
dedicated vocal coach. In addition to her own jazz performance dates and recording projects, Ellen has been a Vocal
Instructor for adults at U.C. Berkeley Extension, a Choral Director in the Oakland Youth Chorus and a Music Instructor at Walden Center and School (Berkeley) and Beacon Day School (Oakland). Currently, Ellen teaches a beginning singing class for women called Swingshift Singers and is the director of the Anything Goes Chorus, a community chorus that gives public concerts and also free performances at retirement homes and homeless shelters since the
early 1980s. In 2011 Ellen was honored with a prestigious Jefferson Award for her community work.
Andy Sarouhan
is a Bay Area native, having grown up in San Mateo. His improvisation training began in
1992, when he joined his high school improv team; that event started a chain reaction which eventually resulted in
a B.A. in Theatre from UC San Diego, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from UC Riverside. In the last 10 years,
Andy has improvised professionally with Flash Family and the Un-Scripted Theater Company, the latter of which
he is now an artistic staff member. He has coached improvisation since 2001, working with ImprovWorks, BATS
Improv, and helping to found the Un-Scripted Theater Company's School of Improvisation. His most rewarding
work has been with young people in San Mateo, where he is a coach of three different high school improvisation
teams; they never cease to amaze him.
Debbie Sternbach is the owner and producer of Fascinating Rhythm Productions, a company specializing in customized
dance entertainment for corporate events and major hotels. For over 25 years, she has produced shows for both national and international clients, ranging from Visa International to the MIKI Corporation of Japan. She has created opening act shows for such headliners as Julio Iglesias, Little Richard, and Wynona Judd. As a performer, Debbie is most proud of her partnership with tap virtuoso Sam Weber. Her performing credits, including both
duets and solos, include shows in London, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Reno and on the east coast. Locally,
she’s appeared in such shows as Beach Blanket Babylon’s 20th Anniversary Show at the S.F. Opera House,
with Tommy Tune, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Debbie is a former student of the late, great tap
master Stanley Kahn. She also studied privately with Sam Weber for over 20 years. Debbie continues to
produce shows and teach, sharing her love of the art of tap dance. For more information about Debbie, go

Kirk Waller With a lifelong love of story, literature and the performing arts, Kirk Waller has been immersed in
these art forms for over 20 years. He has garnered national recognition for his storytelling, including being awarded
the J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Grant by the National Storytelling Network, receiving a Parent’s Choice Foundation GOLD award for his CD, “But Why? Stories, Music and Songs” and being a storyteller at the Exchange Place
at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tenn. In addition to being the Director of Storytelling at
Stagebridge, he is current chair of the Storytelling Association of California and is on the advisory board of Tell It
On Tuesday at The Marsh in Berkeley. Kirk received his bachelor’s degree in English and his Master’s in Creative
Writing from San Francisco State University.
