HENDON NEWS LANGUAGE COLLEGE Dear Parents and Carers, The Hendon School Sponsored Walk will be held on the 22nd of July, the last Wednesday of the term. This second ever whole school walk will be the same as last year, a section of the Capital Ring from Hendon to Highgate. Students will have the choice to walk one way (getting the tube to Highgate to start) or to Highgate and back. The shorter walk will take up to 2 hours (5.5 miles), the longer one 4 hours (11 miles). Last year’s walk was great fun and a really nice community event. Students will be back at school for lunchtime and in time for the ‘Hendonbury’ Music and Drama event on the afternoon of the same day. The students have all voted and decided that the money raised should be spent on outdoor play equipment, the more money we can raise, the more equipment we can buy. Sponsor forms and letters will be out in the next couple of weeks. Please help us with this day by returning the permission form quickly and helping your child with sponsorship. Sponsor money can then be handed in on the last day of the term. We expect all students to take part in this whole school activity, if there is a valid reason why any student cannot, please contact me at school - [email protected] or 020 82029004 ext. 253 Thanks for all you support, Tom Mann – Assistant Headteacher WE NEED YOUR HELP! With clear skies, searing temperatures and a flat wicket the scene was set for a high scoring encounter between the two powerhouses of Barnet cricket. Hendon captain Hamza Khan won the toss and elected to bat which led to his team posting a reasonable total of 61-5 in 12 overs of play. Again it was Sami Noor who showed glimpses of his batting prowess with a quick fire 5 runs from 4 balls before being run out. With Compton’s bowling attack not offering too much in terms of pace and variety and Hendon’s running between the wickets still leaving a lot to be desired Khan will probably feel that his batsmen were 20 short of a really strong total. For much of their innings Compton were well below the required run rate; with Jayakody Arachchilage and Noor proving once again that they have both the pace and accuracy to thwart even the strongest of batting line ups. A flurry of extras in overs 9 and 10 however left Compton requiring a reasonable 5 runs to win from the final over. Khan gave Noor the responsibility of seeing Hendon over the line and despite conceding just the 1 run from his first 2 balls, Hendon were to lose in the cruellest of fashions as one of Noor’s trademark full pace bowls took an inside edge before heading for a 4. Despite another loss it is clear that Welch and Richardson are building a team that will no doubt be challenging for championships in years to come. The curtains will close on the league season next Wednesday as the Red shirts travel to Mill Hill County, the school which ended the Year 7 football team’s pursue of silverware earlier in the year in what will no doubt be another gruelling encounter. Year 7 London Youth Games @ Lords Indoor Cricket Ground (Tuesday 9th June) Result – Semi-Finalists Star Batsmen – Sethum Jayakody Arachchilage Star Bowler – Hamza Khan Star Player – Cody Smullen A perfect over from Jayakody Arachchilage in which he hit 4 sixes from 4 deliveries was not enough to see Hendon through to the final of the London Youth Games Plate. They were eliminated on ‘wickets lost’ after drawing with Barnhill Academy (Newham) in their 8 over semi-final at Lords Cricket Ground. Apprehension soon turned to excitement as Khan (C) and Varsani (VC) took the team through their warm up at the famous Lords Cricket Ground. The team were taking a much needed break from the regular league season to represent the Borough of Barnet at the prestigious Kwik Cricket tournament featuring some of the most feared Cricket programmes in London. Chasing down a realistic total of 39 from 8 overs, Hendon would have fancied their chance to take all 3 points from their first group game of the tournament. After reaching 20 from their first 3 overs courtesy of some quick running between the wickets by Holmes and Smullen Hendon were all set for the perfect start to the competition. It was ultimately a cruel spell of run-outs (each wicket lead to a 5 run deduction) in the final 2 overs which led to Hendon falling 5 runs short in their run chase and with it all to do if they wanted to escape a tough group and reach the semi-finals. With Khan in the form of his life with the ball in hand and Smullen pulling off superb catch after catch, The Red Shirts went unbeaten in the remainder of their group games to make the semi-finals of the London Youth Games Plate. Standing between this Year 7 Hendon team and a maiden final were Barnhill Academy, a school with an illustrious cricket history in the Borough of Newham. Varsani, Khan and Noor did wonders with the ball to limit Barnhill to their lowest total of the tournament (35 runs). Jayakody Arachchilage then followed this up by producing a memorable 24 runs from 4 balls in the first over of the innings and Hendon were poised to make history and make it through the final. Unfortunately after Jayakody Arachchilage had completed his allocated 2 overs Hendon recorded just the one boundary and lost 5 wickets in the proceeding 5 overs. With 6 balls remaining and Hendon 3 runs to the good, the stage was set for Gallagher and Karimi to play themselves into Hendon folklore, but it was a Barnhill wicket with 2 balls remaining which led to Hendon requiring 3 runs to reach the finals. A brave and valiant effort saw Gallagher hit a 2 from the last ball, however it wasn’t meant to be for Hendon as they were eliminated on ‘wickets lost’ after recording the exact same number of runs as Barnhill. www.hendonschool.co.uk Page | 2 12 June 2015 Despite the obvious heartbreak amongst the ranks at being eliminated by the finest of margins in such a prestigious competition, Khan and co were able to reflect on what was a once in a lifetime experience for the team as they were able to emulate their heroes at the home of English cricket. We hope to make it a fun and exciting day for the whole family, so that we can raise much needed money for the school to purchase external gym equipment and towards a new dance studio. We will be having a range of activities including Aqua zorbing, Classic Cars, stalls selling a range of goods, sporting events and performances throughout the day. However the success of the day depends on all students (past and present) families and friends attending. Please put this date in your diary. If you are able to support the fair by donating food and or tombola/raffle prizes we would be very grateful. We also need more helpers to assist on the day to help with setting up, manning stalls/activities and serving refreshments. We really would appreciate your help in this as we very much want to make the event a highlight in the school calendar and raise money to help the school and our current students.
