on June 6 and 7, and with more than
120 buildings opening to the public free
of charge, this year’s event promises
to be one of the best yet.
Doors Open Ottawa is the region’s largest heritage event, unlocking over 120 of the area’s most architecturally
interesting and historically significant buildings, many of which are not normally open to the public.
From Carp to Cumberland and everywhere in between; embassies, places of worship, museums, artist’s studios, architectural
firms, and science labs are yours to explore free of charge! From architectural buffs to those looking for a weekend full of free fun,
Doors Open Ottawa allows everyone to learn something new about their local heritage, architecture and design.
The FREE Ottawa Citizen-Doors Open Shuttle Bus will travel within walking distance
(approx. one km.) of nearly 50 participating buildings.

to Pinhey’s Point Historic Site. Are modern commercial and
government buildings more your speed? Tour the University of
Ottawa’s Advanced Research Complex. Doors Open Ottawa offers
something for everyone, from municipal facilities to places of
worship to embassies and high commissions from across the globe,
including Algeria, Armenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France,
Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, the United States
(pre-registration required) and Vietnam.

A superb example of decorative Queen Anne Revival architecture,
the house was built in 1889 for Robert J. Davidson of Davidson
Lumber Co. as a wedding gift for his wife. He hired his best
craftsmen to install ornate oak walls, doors and ceilings. Today, it

Located at the corner of King Edward Avenue, this $70-million
University of Ottawa facility designed by architect Stephen Jones
of Cole and Associates opened in 2014. Its impressive lobby puts
science on display by showcasing a 44-tonne accelerator mass
spectrometer through a two-storey viewing window. It also contains
world-class photonics laboratories, nestled into the hillside to

The Carleton County Courthouse was built in 1870-72 for $48,000.
By the 1940s, the Courthouse was also being used as the County
Council Chamber. It underwent renovations in 1950-63. In 1987,
the site was designated for use as a local arts centre. It now hosts
25 art organizations, theatres, dance studios, a media hub group

7.Ayers Building – Rural Ottawa South Support Services

Built in 1902, the former Union Bank known as the Ayers Building,
is part of Dickinson Square in the heart of Manotick Village. The
current home of the Rural Ottawa South Support Services features
a beautiful red brick exterior, high baseboards, original window
trim, and authentic banisters and spindles, and is a City of Ottawa
Unique Heritage Site and has an Ontario Heritage Designation. W,

8.Barry Padolsky Associates Inc. Architects, Mercury Court Building

Originally built in 1923 as Larocque’s Department Store,
Mercury Court was renovated and expanded by Barry Padolsky
Associates Inc. Architects from 1989 to 1993; it is now home
to this architectural firm. Features include the “flying Mercury”
weathervane, which adorned the Sun Life Building at Bank and

9.Bethany Hope Centre

Bethany Hope Centre is a reinvention of an old barracks-type
building. What was once mostly bricks and mortar is now a space
full of light, colour and beauty. This renovation was intentionally

10.Billings Estate Artefact Collection Storage

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Billings Estate National
Historic Site collection, listen to the stories these treasures tell,
and learn how the City of Ottawa cares for historic artefacts. Guided
tours will begin in the lobby of the Routhier Community Centre

The AIDS Committee of Ottawa (ACO) has served the HIV/AIDS
community for 30 years, providing education and support services
around HIV/AIDS. Built in 1961 and overlooking the Rideau Canal,
the home of the ACO features a drop-in centre known as the Living
Room – a place of comfort and care that pays tribute to the origins
of the HIV/AIDS movement in Canada in the early ‘80s. W, D, P, F,

11.Billings Estate National Historic Site

Braddish Billings, the first settler of Gloucester Township, built
Ottawa’s oldest wood-frame house from 1827 to 1829. Learn about
the architectural details as you tour from basement to attic, and

12.Bridgehead Roastery

Bridgehead restored the beauty and character of this original
structure, which was a carriage stable built in the 1920s, to use as
the roastery that supplies fair trade and organic coffee to all 15 of

13.Britannia Yacht Club

Established in 1887, the Britannia Yacht Club was built from an
old sawmill. The newly renovated club house boasts the beautiful
Dragon Lounge where visitors can see a unique bar fashioned out
of a dragon sailboat. Visitors will notice a large stone tower that is
part of the original structure. Despite additions, the clubhouse still
retains its historic appearance. It offers one of the best views of the
Ottawa River that is enjoyed by our members year round. W, D, P,

14.BYTOWN MUSEUM: Commissariat Building

Explore Ottawa’s oldest stone building—the Commissariat. Home
to the BYTOWN MUSEUM, the building was commissioned by
the British Military and completed in 1827 as a storehouse during
construction of the Rideau Canal. Explore our largest artifact

home to one of Canada’s most impressive aircraft collections. Join

18.Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind National Training Centre

Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind has provided professionally
trained guide dogs to visually impaired Canadians since 1984, and
assistance dogs to individuals with mobility-related disabilities since

In 1960, NATO and the Canadian Department of National Defence
built this satellite communications (SATCOM) station. Supporting
a 68-ft. diameter metal space frame radar dome on its roof, it
provides environmental protection for the 50-ft. diameter SATCOM
antenna it houses. The antenna provided satellite communications
between all NATO countries until 1999. It is now headquarters for
the Canadian Space Services Ltd., CSS Wind Inc., and Rocky

The original lodge was built in 1904 as a church, but was destroyed
by fire in 1920. Accentuated by original stained glass windows,
it has been the Village of Carp’s Masonic Lodge since 1925. The
lodge’s interior features beautiful oak furniture used by a military

The red painted frame building with white trim remains a focal point
in the Carp area to this day. One of the few remaining octagonal
fairground buildings once so popular in Ontario, it continues to

The Saunders building holds a complete collection of all plants
found in Canada. In the state-of-the-art greenhouse, you can see
how crops are grown indoors. Outdoor exhibits will also focus on
the agricultural research done at the CEF, the many crops grown

24.Christ Church Cathedral

The first Christ Church was erected in 1832 on land donated by
Nicholas Sparks. In 1870, architect King Arnoldi was commissioned
to build a Middle Pointed style of English Gothic. In 1932, a
Modern Gothic chancel replaced the original. Christopher Wallis
designed the stained glass narthex window above the gallery for

25.City of Ottawa Archives, Rideau Branch

Rideau Archives is located in the former Township of North Gower
hall, built in 1876, a one-storey, brick-faced example of a modest
town hall with fine proportions, careful detailing and a cupola. The
archival collection is a treasure trove of material from the southern
rural part of the City. The new exhibition features the “corners” of

CKCU is Canada’s oldest campus community radio station,
broadcasting live 24 hours a day to a 100 km radius on FM 93.1

27.CNA House

The Canadian Nurses Association’s national headquarters, also
known as CNA House, is an Ottawa landmark with its distinctive
lantern tower and “international style” architecture. The building was
designed by Ottawa architect James Strutt and opened in 1966. In

28.Connaught Building

Built in Modified Norman style and designed by David Ewart,
Connaught opened in 1915 and was named after the Duke of
Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria and Governor General of
Canada 1911-16. Designated as a “Classified” federal heritage
building, primarily for its architectural significance, the structure
is considered to be the “Crown Jewel” of the Canada Revenue

29.Cumberland Heritage Village Museum

Cumberland Heritage Village Museum offers historic and
reproduction buildings clustered on picturesque grounds depicting
rural life in the 1920s and 1930s. Tour an operational sawmill and
blacksmith forge, a one-room school house, a train station and
telegraphy office, a 1927 Imperial Gas garage, a 1904 church

30.Diane A. Gagné Financial Services

Constructed in 1905, the building was home to WWI aviator
Billy Bishop, was used as office space by the Italian Embassy,
and was national headquarters of the Victorian Order of Nurses.
This building was also the headquarters of the Heritage Canada
Foundation between 2000 -2009. Queen Anne Revival details
include the steep, cross-gambrel roof, decorative brickwork,
classically inspired porches, and use of slate, stone and corbelled

31.Dickinson House

Dickinson House was built by M. K. Dickinson, the founder of
the village of Manotick. From 1870 to 1972, the house was the
residence of the Dickinson, Spratt and Watson families, the owner/
operators of the grist mill across the square. The house was visited

This National Historic Site of Canada is best known as the home
of Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. Built of
local limestone between 1855 and 1857 by John MacKinnon, this
Victorian manor is nestled between the Ottawa River and Sussex
Drive. It has been home to successive British High Commissioners

innovative research projects being conducted behind the old stone
walls. As Bruyère Continuing Care celebrates its 170th anniversary,

36.Embassy of Algeria,

The house was built in 1901 by J.R. Booth for his daughter,
Gertrude Fleck. The house remained Mrs. Fleck’s private residence
until her death in 1940. It was then purchased by Senator Norman
Paterson, who lived in it until his death in 1983. The house was
bought by the Algerian Embassy in 2002 and is now used as

The Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum is a four-storey
Cold War bunker built to protect the government from a nuclear
attack on Ottawa. Once top-secret, this underground facility is now

The stone structure of Dominican University College displays the
vaulted ceilings typical of neo-Gothic design. An interior courtyard
visible through large windows opens onto elegant gardens. The
highly reputed library is distinguished by its stained glass and the
Wilson Room, dedicated to antiquated books dating back to the

Built in the 1890’s by a wealthy local doctor, the building is an
example of late Victorian vernacular architecture. The club for the
Liberal Party of Canada moved into the space in the late 1940’s,
helping launch the political careers of Prime Ministers Pearson
and St. Laurent. It has been home to the Embassy of the Czech
Republic since 2000. In 2006, portions of the Embassy were

Designed by James Mather in the Gothic Revival style, the
cornerstone of the church was laid in July 26, 1877 by then PM
Alexander Mackenzie who was a regular worshipper. The church
was designated a civic historic building in 1985. The sanctuary
features interesting stained glass windows - one with an Ottawa
Valley theme. Open for Sunday worship June 7, 10:30 a.m. to

Constructed in 1913, Ottawa architect J.P. MacLaren designed the
church in Classic Italian style. Using Ohio sandstone, Corinthian
columns, pediments, a recessed doorway and a temple plan, it
features a spacious auditorium and three-manual Casavant pipe

Known as Toller House, it was built in the Domestic Gothic Revival
style by Henry Horsey and J. Sheard, architects in 1875. The
building was home to many dignitaries including Frederic Toller,
Auditor General of the Dominion’s Currency in the 1880s. In 1999,
it opened as the Embassy of Croatia after an award-winning

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa was completed in 1999 and replaced
the original Wellington Street facility. Designed by the U.S. firm
Skidmore Owings and Merrill, the building has a distinctive
architectural style featuring a central atrium. The building also has
distinct exterior themes reflecting the architecture of the Byward

former Standard Bread Company building. The building, opened

commercial architecture and first served as a hotel, a women’s
residence, and a primary school. In the late 1990s, the National
Capital Commission took possession of the building to preserve

51.Goulbourn Museum

Built in 1872, the building currently known as the Goulbourn
Museum used to be the old Town Hall. It was originally home to
council meetings, parties, and dances. The adjacent History Centre
building was built in 1961, and was the former Clerks building.

52.Greek Orthodox Church “Dormition of the Virgin Mary”

Built in 1975, and designed by architect Konstantinos Zourdoumis.
A fine example of Neo-Byzantine style with its domed structure.
Highlights include hand-painted Byzantine icons on the domed
ceiling and walls, the hand-carved wood “Iconostasion” wall of
icons in front of the Altar, and mosaic tiles. Photography permitted.

and Tobago. The exterior features gray Ohio sandstone trim and

Knox was completed in 1933, and combines elements of English
Gothic and Norman Church architecture. The Sanctuary is simple

The oldest school in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board,
Lisgar Collegiate Institute, named after Canada’s second Governor
General, was designed by W.T. Thomas and W. Chesterton as

66.Maplelawn Historical Garden

In the 19th century there were many fine houses in Ontario, but
few were graced with walled gardens, and fewer still have survived.
The walled garden at Maplelawn is a rare example and is also

Walkley Yard was built by the NCC in 1955 so CN Rail freight trains
could vacate the lands needed to build the Queensway. In 1967,

has handled the indoor maintenance of the O-Train Trillium Line’s

The permanent exhibit on the second floor of the Richelieu Vanier
Community Centre focuses on the development of the Eastview
township that later became Vanier and its population. During Doors
Open, the museum will offer free 20-minute bilingual interpretation

Built in 1913, the house is a low, sprawling structure and was
Noffke’s first design in what was to become the architect’s favorite
idiom of Spanish-Colonial Revival. The house has been designated

126.Watson’s Mill

Watson’s Mill is a unique 1860s grist and flour mill located on
the Rideau River. It has a remarkable history linked to local politics,

127.Waupoos Family Farm

The land grant was awarded to Andrew Spratt in 1832. The
farmhouse was built in 1891. The barn and house addition were
built after 1946. In 1956, the Oblates purchased the property to use
as a Novitiate. The Waupoos Foundation leased the property in
1980, offering vacations to families in need. Cottages, lodge, chapel

128.Westboro Masonic Hall

Built in 1924 for the Masons of Westboro, the two-storey red brick
Edwardian structure houses an elegant Victorian banquet hall
featuring high ornate ceiling hardwood floors, Austrian crystal
chandelier, among other features. The top floor is dedicated to
the Lodge Room where the Masons hold their meetings, opened

Located in the former St. Pius X School of Le Conseil des écoles
catholiques de langue française du Centre-Est, this building has
been customized to function as a school for young mothers (age
14 to 21) and their children (age 2 months to 3 years). It is a bright,
modern and friendly building. Experience the energy and life within
