As always, there will be special events and celebrations, including our 3rd Annual Summer Solstice Party, holiday parties on the lawn, the 29th Annual Teddy Bear Picnic, Oktoberfest, and Dinners in the Dahlias. One of the strong attributes of High Hampton is our long-time staff, who eagerly await your arrival each season. Most have been with us for at least five years – and quite a few are second, third, or even fourth generation employees. How remarkable! Greetings from the McKee family! We hope that you had a happy holiday season and that 2015 is off to a great start! Our 93rd season will be beginning before we know it. Spring is just around the corner. 2014 was one of the best years in High Hampton’s history! Much gratitude is owed to our loyal guests who return year after year, and to our new guests, many of whom discovered High Hampton by attending a wedding or a family reunion. So many families and couples appreciate what makes High Hampton unique – there is truly something special here for everyone. High Hampton Realty also had a banner year in 2014! Several existing homeowners started building new residences here, while others experienced High Hampton home ownership for the first time. Before the Inn closed its doors after a “white” Thanksgiving last year, our winter projects were already underway. In 2015, you’ll enjoy a newly refurbished and redecorated lobby and remodeled ladies restroom. The children’s swimming area at the lake is now larger, as is the deck surrounding it. All the boats will be under cover, with a roof added over the outer dock. New patio furniture will enhance your lakefront enjoyment. We will open the 93rd season with a very special program, a Writer’s Retreat, held April 24th to April 26th. Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump, has assembled an excellent group of today’s top authors. The retreat includes intimate coaching sessions, speakers, and panel discussions. It promises to be an amazing weekend for writers and readers alike. Some unique, exciting recreational opportunities await you this year: falconry, llama walks, and a new nearby zip line canopy tour! These are in addition Clifford Meads 2 Clifford Meads returns for his eighth year as our General Manager. His daughter, Caroline Grogan, our Special Events Coordinator, is also in her eighth season. Your wedding, family reunion and other memorable occasions are in very capable hands. 2015 will be a big year for our family! Will and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary, my mother’s 90th birthday, and our daughter, Liz’s, 21st birthday. It is amazing that thirty years have passed since Will and I said our vows at High Hampton. It’s now been more than sixty years since my mother and father first vacationed at High Hampton in 1952. When they first visited, I am sure they never imagined how High Hampton would become such an integral part of their lives. The continuity of our family’s shared experiences and traditions here, like those of so many other families, is what sets High Hampton apart from other resorts and communities. We are so thankful to enjoy this beautiful place together with both our own family and our “extended family” – our guests and homeowners. We are looking forward to a successful 93rd season! We hope to see many familiar faces, and to get acquainted with those experiencing High Hampton for the first time. As many of you know, the High Hampton estate boasts a number of world, national, and state champion trees and bushes. There are indigenous as well as exotic flora that were planted here in the early 1900’s. The estate’s previous owners, Caroline Halsted, niece of General Wade Hampton, and her husband, the famous surgeon, William Stewart Halsted, traveled the world collecting specimens of trees and shrubs and planted them here. Mr. and Mrs. E.L. McKee, Sr., grandparents of the current owner, added to the Halsted’s collection. Of particular note is the world’s largest specimen of Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri). Large examples of the following species are also noteworthy. Each is on the Champion Tree Trail and has a marker: European Copper Beech, Weeping Beech, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Bald Cypress, English Elm, Gingko, European Larch, Black Locust, Umbrella Magnolia, Sugar Maple, Princess Tree, Norway Spruce, Tulip Tree, Bottle Brush Buckeye and English Yew. Self-guided nature walks have been designed to impart a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural world and highlight the area’s historical, botanical, and zoological diversity. Bird watchers, too, could have a field day. Over 147 types of birds have been sighted on the estate. Historic Dahlia Garden High Hampton is involved in conservation programs and works to balance the pressures of the millennium with a goal of preserving this precious natural resource for future generations. High Hampton Is Not For Everyone Over the years, it’s been found that not everyone likes it here, especially those who want plush accommodations rather than mountain rustic. Fortunately, many people do like it and come back season after season. High Hampton is a special place where time seems to stand still and very little changes, except the seasons. While there are enjoyable daytime and evening activities for guests, there are no neon lights or casinos. Commercialism is not part of the scenery. 11 Visit High Hampton ~ It’s Captivating Distance in Miles Distance in Miles Asheville (60) Asheville Airport (49) Atlanta (150) Augusta (178) Birmingham (295) Charleston, SC (275) Charlotte (140) Chattanooga (140) Chicago (663) Cincinnati (358) Cleveland (601) Columbia, SC (180) Gatlinburg (90) Greenville, SC (70) Highlands, NC (10) Jacksonville (400) Knoxville (140) Lexington (287) Louisville (353) Mobile (509) Nashville (305) New Orleans (610) New York City (790) Orlando (540) Palm Beach (675) Raleigh (285) Richmond (450) Sarasota (620) Savannah (280) Tampa (575) Washington, DC (530) Winston-Salem (195) Real Estate Assistance For information on purchasing property or homes in the Cashiers or Highlands area, contact Will McKee or Manuel de Juan at High Hampton Realty.
