Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade
Hi Hikurangi.
Welcome to February, a very good February to date. We are
enjoying the quiet few weeks we have had. We are yet to have
a call this month which is great news, it shows to us that the
community is being safe on the roads and thinking about the
conditions before lighting any fires.
The weather is still warm so With the hot weather we have had and are continuing to
have there is now a restricted fire season in the Whangarei
area and PERMITS ARE REQUIRED for all fires. It is all
because Conditions are very dry at the moment and there
does not appear to be much relief on the horizon. Long
range forecasters predict a very fine February and March
ahead of us.
There are some exceptions, but these come with Strict
Conditions. For Commercially constructed BBQs, incinerators, and cooking fires such as hangi and spits are exempt
but with the following strict conditions:
•
An adult must be present at all times.
•
You must have a pressurized water supply.
•
The fire needs to be PUT OUT as soon as you are
done, not left to burn out.
•
There needs to be a 10 metre clear area around the
fire.
•
The fire can be no bigger than 2 metres by 2 metres.
Please remember a fire officer can order ANY fire put out
if considered dangerous whether You have a permit or not,
and persons can be held liable for any Costs incurred by
the Fire Service coming to your fire.
For more info on the ban visit havingafire.org.nz.
Permits can only be obtained from Forest Protection Services in South End Ave on 430-7707. Please don’t contact
any brigade members to issue a permit, we are not authorized to grant rights for fires.
With the heat of the summer please keep yourself and those
you love well hydrated. The heat of the day can creep up on us
and heat stroke takes affect quickly. The Ambulance service
are as busy as we are, which is why you may see us first instead of the ambulance you first called for.
As many of you go on day trips and outings, be safe on the
road, take care, be considerate of your fellow drivers and
when tired please rest - better to take a half hour break than to
use us to come call on you in our big red truck.
With the brigades 100th Anniversary of service to the Hikurangi Community coming up we want to hold an event to mark
this occasion. We are currently in the planning stage and are
looking for fundraising ideas.
We would like to thank Tod for the use of the barbeque and to
the community for your support at the recent Market Day. Last
month it was said there was a plan to have another car wash.
Due to the donation of the BBQ at the markets it has been
pushed back to a later date yet to be confirmed.
As we work on a few ideas keep an eye out for events you
might be keen on. We will also be hosting two BBQs outside
Mitre 10 Mega in March and April. We have a few more ideas
in the planning stage so keep an eye out, we will keep you up
to date with events and dates so you know when and where.
We have had 10 calls: 15/1 Med call Whananaki, 17/1 tanker
to help Kamo bbq fire, 20/1 House fire Ngahau Bay turned out
to be fire in drum, 22/1 MVA Russell Rd, 25/1 tanker to shed
fire Pipiwai, 25/1 fire in area Rockell Rd, 25/1 Rubbish fire
behind house Whananaki North Rd, 29/1 MVA Whakapara,
29/1 Grass fire SH 1, 31/1 MVA Whananaki.
That’s all for this month.

War Memorial Stone.
The Hikurangi R.S.A. were concerned because we had no
Memorial Stone for those whose lives were lost during WW1,
(this stone was washed away in the 1926 floods and it was
never recovered or replaced). The WW2 Memorial was also
incomplete, some names were omitted. The names in the War
Memorial Hall were different to the ones on the Memorial at
the Hikurangi School and the Hikurangi Museum, so a new
Memorial was proposed and donations were sought. When the
money was raised and all the names were verified and missing
names added, the Memorial was commissioned.
The unveiling of the New Memorial Stone will take place
at the Hikurangi Primary School, Valley Rd, at 9.30am on
Thursday February 26th 2015 and then on to the Hikurangi Memorial Hall for the unveiling of the Hall Plaques
of the 1st and 2nd World Wars. The relations of the families and members of the public are welcome to attend.
We wish to thank the following Sponsors:
Fonterra,
Oxford Sports Trust,
Hikurangi Lodge,
Hikurangi Mountain Lions,
Golden Bay Cement,
Croft Poles,
Herman Timber Ltd,
Hikurangi Business Association
and Downers,
for their generous donations. Without these donations the
project would not have taken place.
Thank You Alan Riceman President.
If you have any stories you would like to share
with the rest of the community about social
activities-interesting or humorous people or
events please email Friendship House or drop it
into us by the 15th of each month.
Thanks.

Hikurangi Police
There have been a few burglaries around the area
where sheds have been entered and property taken,
along with other properties where houses were entered.
It’s a timely reminder that everyone be more vigilant and
any suspicious activity in and around where you live
needs to be reported via Crime Reporting Line. Getting a
good description of any persons and also getting registration numbers helps a lot. Lately the public have started videoing from their phones and forwarding to Police.
That is technology at its best. A lot of crimes and footage
are being shared on Facebook and the results are amazing.
We've had a bit of graffiti around town especially using
marker pens. This is damages to property and the penalty is around $2000.00 per item or property.
I have attended a crash at the intersection of George St
and State Highway 1 where a vehicle failed to give way
when turning into George St, Hikurangi. Thankfully there
were no injuries but it has the potential to be serious.
A reminder that Stop signs are there for a reason. Plenty
of vehicles are not stopping or just rolling through, there
are no excuses for this especially around King St/Valley
Rd and the highway.
Family violence is on the rise again, as I have attended
many incidents mostly all are alcohol related, by both
parties too.
You would have read in the media about a young man
who was the main hero in rescuing a swimmer who was
washed off the rocks at Matapouri Bay. I was there and
yes he was an amazing young man, who swam him
around from Mermaid Pools to the rock at the Matapouri
Bay, then swam back to shore to raise the alarm which
was already in progress. He suffered a little as his body
temperature fell very low but what a brave deed for such
a young man. The other swimmer was very thankful. I
too praised this young man as he did save a life, and no
one drowned.
Lately we had an armed incident in Hikurangi, nothing to
be alarmed about as Police received information that a
wanted person was probably in Hikurangi, and that is
what was going on. Not sure of the result as I was only
on outside cordon.
But it was kind of exciting albeit a plane was hovering
around making noise, which disturbed a few people.
Russell LM Rawiri Senior Constable Hikurangi.
A Never Failing Recipe.
Equal parts of healthy, honest work, rest and recreation, mixed
together most carefully with diligence, contentment, cheerfulness and even temper. Sift the above through a sieve of determination to get rid of any hard lumps of idleness, covetousness, or despondency and bring the whole to a cream by adding the milk of kindness and spirit of consideration and sympathy, stirring each in with an unsparing hand. Add to the
whole a light sprinkle of smiles and colour with laughter.
Keep where it can it can be seen in season at all times.

VILLAGE CHURCH
Hi Hikurangi.
This is the first of our regular reports in the Bulletin. I
pray that the report will be of use to you in this unstable
world we are living in. There is so much that we have to
struggle with just to survive. We have broken marriages,
dysfunctional relationships, family turmoil, no jobs and
not enough money and so it goes on. This is not how
God planned it all. He loves us and only wants the best
for us, but we so often choose to do it our way.
In the Bible Jesus was asked “How should we pray”?
He told us in Matthew 6:9-10 “Our Father who art in
Heaven hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”. God’s
plan was that we should have Heaven on earth. That’s
His Kingdom. His Kingdom is a lifestyle which has everything we need. It’s not religion.
God is the King of the Kingdom. He said that to get into
His Kingdom is not by going to church or by doing good
to man, being generous etc. You can only get into the
Kingdom through the door. Sin cannot enter into the
Kingdom, so Jesus died on the cross for our sin. Jesus
is the door. John 10:9 “I am the door, by me if any man
enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and
find good pasture”.
Jesus is the Key to entering into the Kingdom Lifestyle.
God Bless You
