Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade
Hi Hikurangi. We are moving.
By the time you read this we should be in our new (temporary)
fire station. Next month is the start of a new fire station for
Hikurangi, demolishing the current building and rebuilding a
new station on the same site. The construction time of the
building is approximately 9 months. During this time we will
be working out of the pallet factory, we will have no siren, we
will be relying on pager and text messages. We will still be
operating as normal.
At the 100yr centennial we hope to unveil a new station to the
community. The rebuild can be considered as a 100th birthday
present from the fire service.
With cyclone Pam upon us hopefully everyone had prepared
for what might come of this. Despite this the restricted fire
season is still in place.
The restricted fire season in the Whangarei area
means PERMITS ARE REQUIRED for fires. It
is all because Conditions are very dry at the moment. There are some exceptions, but they come
with Strict Conditions. Commercially constructed BBQs, incinerators, and cooking fires such as
hangi and spits are exempt but with the following strict conditions:
An adult must be present at all mes.
You must have a pressurized water supply.
The fire needs to be PUT out as soon as
you are done, not le to burn out.
There needs to be a 10 metre clear area
around the fire.
The fire can be no bigger than 2 metres by
2 metres.
And remember a fire officer can order ANY fire
put out if considered dangerous whether You
have a permit or not.
Persons can be held liable for any Costs incurred
by the fire service coming to your fire.
For more information on the fire ban please visit
havingafire.org.nz. Permits can only be obtained
from Forest Protection Services in South End
Ave on 430-7707. Please don’t contact any brigade members to issue a permit. We are not authorized to grant rights for fires.
The Ambulance service are busy as we are, which is why you
may see us first instead of the ambulance you first called for.
As many of you go on day trips and outings be safe on the
road, take care, be considerate of your fellow drivers and
when tired please rest. Better to take a half hour break than for
us to come call on you in our big red truck.
With the brigade’s 100th Anniversary of service to the Hikurangi Community coming up we want to hold an event to mark
this occasion. We are currently in the planning stage and are
looking for fundraising ideas. As we work on a few ideas keep
an eye out for events you might be keen on.
We will also be hosting two BBQs outside Mitre 10 Mega on
the 21st March and we are hoping for a good day, also again
on the 18th April so if you are around Mitre 10 come and see
us.
Fire Brigade cont: With a few more ideas in the planning
stage we invite you to keep an eye out. We will keep you up to
date with events and dates so you know when and where.
February had a quiet start to the month with our 1st call coming on the 16th having 3 in 3 hrs that night. For the last month
we had 12 calls: 16th Feb MVA Towai, 16th Feb Smoke showing Waiotu Block Rd, 16th Feb Rubbish Fire Whananaki North
Rd, 18th Feb Rubbish fire Hikurangi, 20th Feb MVA Helena
Bay, 22nd Feb Grass Fire Whananaki North Rd, 24th MVA
Kauri, 5th Mar Tractor Fire Maromaku, 6th Mar, MVA Whakapara, 8th Mar Trees on fire Vinegar Hill, 8th Scrub fire Kauri, 8th Bush fire Whananaki North Rd.
That’s all for this month

Never a Truer Word
Another year has passed
And we’re all a little older.
Last summer felt hotter
And winter seems much colder.
There was a time not long ago
When life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand
About ‘Living in the Past’.
We used to go to weddings,
Football games and lunches.
Now we go to funeral homes
And after-funeral brunches.
We used to have hangovers,
From parties that were gay.
Now we suffer body aches
And wile the night away.

Only The Irish
We used to go out dining,
And couldn’t get our fill.
Now we ask for doggie bags,
Come home and take a pill.
We used to often travel
To places near and far.
Now we get sore asses
From riding in the car.
Three Irishmen, Paddy, Sean and Seamus were stumbling home from the pub late one night and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard.
“Come have a look over here,” says Paddy, “It’s Michael
O’Grady’s grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe
old age of 87”. “That’s nothing,” says Sean. “Here’s one
named Patrick O’Toole, it says here that he was 95
when he died.” Then Seamus yells out, “Good God,
here’s a fella that got to be 145!” “What was his name?”
asks Paddy. Seamus stumbles around a bit, awkwardly
lights a match to see what else is written on the stone
marker, and exclaims, “Miles, from Dublin.”
We used to go to nightclubs
And drink a little booze.
Now we stay home at night
And watch the evening news.
That, my friend is how life is,
And now my tale is told.
So, enjoy each day and live it up…
Before you’re too damned old!
A couple had been married for 45 years and had raised a brood
of 11 children and was blessed with 22 grandchildren. When
asked the secret for staying together all that time, the wife
replies, “Many years ago we made a promise to each other: the
first one to pack up and leave has to take all the kids”.

P.S. Those who went, had a great time at the Raft
Race on Saturday March 14th. But very disappointing
that only 2 rafts entered. We had kayak racing and
the Miners Rest Café not only supplied the winning raft
but also some good prizes. Thank you Terry and crew
and those who helped on the day.
