Position Description Washington Monument Site Manager Start Date: June 15, 2015 (on or about) Employer: Mount Vernon Place Conservancy (MVPC) 901 S. Bond Street, Suite 400A Baltimore, MD 21231 The Mount Vernon Place Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2008 whose mission is to restore, maintain, and manage the Squares of Mount Vernon Place and the Washington Monument in partnership with the City of Baltimore. As part of a capital campaign to create an enduring public space, MVPC oversaw the restoration of the monument which will reopen to the public on July 4, 2015. Position: Washington Monument Site Manager 600 block N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201 Type: This is a part-time hourly position. The position is “at-will” so either party may terminate at any time given reasonable notice under the relevant circumstances. The first three months will be considered a probationary period during which MVPC will evaluate how the employment arrangement is progressing and determine what, if any, changes might be necessary and appropriate. Hours: 26 hours per week, as follows: Thursdays, 3pm-9:30pm; Fridays-Sundays, 11am5:30pm. (The Site Manager will be paid for staff training sessions, and for all meetings scheduled outside regular work hours.) Hiring Rate: $25 per hour Details: Duties Manage and supervise all aspects of the Washington Monument (site) operations during open hours, including scheduling two Site Assistants (who will share hours), supervision of staff and volunteers, guest services, visitor flow and access to tower, attendance tracking, security, safety, resource protection, cleanliness, operating procedures, and opening and closing. (Public hours: Thursday, 4-9pm; Friday-Sunday, noon-5pm.) Welcome and orient visitors; act as ambassador for the site and MVPC by providing excellent customer service and positive visitor experiences; promote MVPC mission. (Site Manager will be expected to become conversant in Monument history and comfortable answering basic questions, but will not be expected to give guided tours.) 1 Position Description Washington Monument Site Manager Ensure that the site (including exterior area inside fence) is a safe environment for all visitors, general public, staff, and volunteers, and that the exhibits, equipment, and site are properly maintained, clean, and free of vandalism. Manage staff and volunteers, ensuring a high level of visitor services at all times. Provide feedback to MVPC regarding the performance of staff and volunteers. Advise MVPC of any problems, maintenance needs, vandalism, supply shortages, and personnel problems, as necessary. Assist MVPC with evaluation of operations, visitor services, and interpretation. Other duties as assigned by MVPC to support Conservancy operations. Reports to Cathy Rosenbaum of MVPC. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to manage facilities, supervise staff and volunteers, solve problems, think independently, and handle multiple tasks and the unexpected with a calm demeanor and good sense of humor. Ability to engage visitors of all ages, provide exceptional customer service, and deal effectively with a variety of issues to ensure their successful conclusion. Possess friendly, active listening habits, good conversational and public speaking skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to form effective working relationships with subordinate staff, volunteers, staff of local organizations, and colleagues. Reliable and committed to the position, the site and other staff, and the MVPC mission. Flexibility to work on weekends, and one weekday evening. Certification in Red Cross Adult/Child First Aid/CPR/A-E-D (automated external defibrillator). MVPC will provide training. Proficiency with computers, mobile devices, and Microsoft Word and Excel. Physical Demands & Work Environment Must be able to walk to the top of the Washington Monument tower which has 227 steps at least once per day, sometimes more frequently. The work will involve extensive periods of standing and walking on marble surfaces in a work setting that has moderate discomforts, e.g., confined space, high or low temps. Education and Experience Supervisory and customer service experience required. Experience working at an historic site or museum preferred, but not required. Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required. 2 Position Description Washington Monument Site Manager Preferences: Hospitality experience Knowledge of, and comfort with online ticketing systems. Knowledge of Baltimore history and experience in interpretation.
