Dear Parents and Guardians:
Our clubs and athletic teams continued in full force during the month of April. Many
students in Gr. 8-11 took the opportunity to campaign for a position on next year’s
student council and approximately 150 students signed up to participate in track and
field meets. Many of our volleyball, badminton and rugby teams have also been
competing in district playoff championships.
M. Ratcliffe
Vice- Principal
With two months of the school year remaining, it is important that students stay focussed
and committed to their studies. Maintaining positive work habits will help to ensure a
strong finish to the school year.

Term 3 Interim Reports should be arriving at your home by mail this week. These interim
reports give parents and students another opportunity to evaluate the educational
goals set for this year and set a plan in place to ensure completion of a successful year.
Parents are encouraged to contact the subject teacher if they have any questions. The
pace definitely becomes a little more frantic, especially for our grade 10-12 students
who have Provincial Exams to prepare for. We encourage students to ensure they
maintain a healthy lifestyle during these busy months by ensuring they eat well, get
enough sleep, and continue to participate in physical activity.

The last day of classes is Thursday, June 18th, with Provincial exams starting on Friday,
June 19 and continuing through to Wednesday, June 24th. Although there are no formal
classes on June 19th, this day has been designated as “I Removal” day for students who
have not yet been able to demonstrate the required learning outcomes in their courses.
Teachers will also have scheduled ‘Learning Support’ hours on June 22-24 to provide
assistance to students who choose to come to school for extra help. Attendance from
June 19-24 is optional for students and learning opportunities are self-directed by
students.
The provincial exam schedule has been set and can be found at
www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams or by viewing the Cambie Parent ‘Week at a Glance’ on
the Cambie website. We ask that parents of Gr. 10-12 students do not make plans for
the students to leave early as this could jeopardize student marks. Provincial exams can
only be offered at the scheduled time and we are not able to adjust the date or time of
the exams.
Please continue to monitor the Cambie website for the most up-to-date information.

Cambie Secondary Newsletter – April, 2015 Page 1 HISTORY CRUSADERS CLUB
Congratulations to the History Crusaders Club for an
outstanding effort at the first ever regional
International History Bee and Bowl Competition at Eric
Hamber on April 25! Kavya Balajepalli, Michelle Chan,
Fendi Huynh, Shaan Lail, and Jasmine Piao competed
on topics encompassing the history of the arts,
sciences, philosophy and religion, 21st century history,
and even a smattering of the history of sports and
entertainment! This group definitely knows that history
is far more than just names and dates, but rather the
story of all human activity. It was a very entertaining
and fun experience!
Who are our First Responders? What is the ‘First Responder’ Program? The Canadian Red Cross First Responder Program
provides our students with Advanced First Aid training. It is
the same training that police officers and firefighters are
given. Our students receive ‘professional’ certification
and are then able to volunteer their services as on-site
medical assistants in our school and at outside
community events. Cambie’s First Responders also act
as medical assistants in the event of a medical
emergency/natural disaster.
Anyone can take the course! The only requirement is that
you have a valid Standard First Aid certificate or a
certificate from an equivalent course. Students who are
interested in becoming a First Responder are certified in
the 44-hour Canadian Red Cross course. Most, if not all,
courses are taught here at Cambie. See dates below ….

Hello Cambie students:
The Cambie library continues to be a busy hub of
the school, with classes and individual students
coming in for assignment-based resources as well
as for recreational reading. In the past month, we
processed 830 circulations, up 200 from the same
time period last year! Our "top borrowers" were
the grade 12s, followed by grades 8, 9, 11 and 10.
The following is a list of some of our more popular
fiction titles:
Cress - Marissa Meyer
Champion: a Legendary Novel - Marie Lu
Insurgent - Veronica Roth
Life of Pi: a novel - Yann Martel
Surfacing - Margaret Atwood
Allegiant - Veronica Roth
Class A - Robert Muchamore
Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell
This is a reminder to all students that most
materials are loaned out for two weeks. If a
student needs a book for a longer period of time,
he/she can renew it. We also carry many titles of
popular magazines and newspapers, and are
constantly updating our fiction and non-fiction
books.
There is definitely something for
everyone.
We have a telephone system set up for notifying
students of overdue materials. If a student has
overdue materials and/or unpaid fines, a message
will go out at the beginning of every month from
now until the end of the school year. Please help
us cut down our overdue lists by continuing to be
responsible borrowers.
We look forward to seeing you in the library.
Thank you to our First Responders for their continued care
throughout the school year … Carmen Lam, Anna Wong,
Derek Lee, Sasha Johal, Kayla Woodley, Maggie Chong,
and Nicole Naval. Welcome: Anita Pan.

Responder Program and/or Health Science Program at

Interested in opening your home up
for a rewarding experience?
The International Student Program allows overseas students
to enter Grades 8 through 12 at selected secondary schools
in Richmond, Greater Vancouver. The program gives
overseas students the opportunity to study alongside
Canadian Students in the BC public education system. As a
Host Family, you will have a profound influence of the
student’s study abroad experience. Both your family and the
students you host will ideally gain a mutual understanding
and respect for each other’s culture and world-view. In
addition to economic remuneration, your reward will be the
realization that your commitment to host international
students will, in some small way, contribute to global
understanding and world peace.
Each member of your family and your student will come to
know each other in depth. Our Homestay program is the
ideal setting for this type of experience. If you are interested
in learning more about our hosting program, please forward
an email for information

With hockey and basketball into the playoffs, baseball
kicking off, and soccer in full swing there is plenty of
athletic business going on. But maybe you don’t quite
get what’s going on. Or maybe you want to actually
go out and play them. Here’s a few books to help
figure it all out:
The Sports Rules Book by Human Kinetics
Just like it says in the title, this is a book of rules for
various sports from hockey to taekwondo and cricket
to speed skating. Confused about which football is
which? This is book to help explain the difference.
Sports: The Complete Visual Reference by François
Fortin
As above, but with even more! It also includes a list of
what potential skills may be best suited to a particular
sport to help pick which might be right for you.
Sports and Games of the 18th and 19th Centuries;
Sports and Games of the Ancients; Sports and Games
of Medieval Cultures by various authors
Regular sports too common for you? You can try to
play stuff from the old days. The really old days. Like,
ancient times.
Come in to the Cambie branch or any library to find
these or anything else you like: we’re here to help.
Steven is a Library Technician at the Cambie branch of the
Richmond Public Library.

See each post secondary institution website for details/updates. Once you have applied, be sure to check your account often for messages! Students need to authorize the Ministry to transfer these marks: this is done by filling in the online PSI Choices form at the Student Secure Website: https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student/welcome Failing to do this may jeopardize a September entry to post-‐secondary education. st
