To Register: www.hknc.org SEMINAR OVERVIEW Interpreting with individuals who are deaf-blind can be a challenging and rewarding experience due to the unique diversity within the population. In order to have successful interactions, the interpreter must possess a myriad of skills in order to meet the individual needs of each consumer. This intensive seminar is designed to enhance learning through the use of online learning tools and face-to-face hands-on activities. Participants will leave with a strong working knowledge of the types of deaf-blindness, common eye diseases, and communication modalities used within the community. Participants will also learn about assistive technology, interpreting strategies for visual and tactile communicators, human guide techniques, cultural awareness, touch signals and Support Service Providers. PROFESSIONAL TRAINING SEMINAR DETAILS LOCATION: The seminar will be held in the Leona and Harry B. Helmsley Conference Center on the campus of the Helen Keller National Center, a beautiful 25 acre facility in Sands Point, Long Island, NY. The Center is convenient to most NYC area airports. Housing is available on campus on a first come/first served basis. REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be working community or educational interpreters. Fluency in ASL and previous interpreting experience is required. COURSE STRUCTURE: This is a two-part seminar. Participation in BOTH sections is required to earn CEUs and a Certificate of Participation. Part I will be an online segment to be completed prior to the seminar. Part II is at HKNC headquarters for hands-on application of skills. Check-out at 9:00AM on Friday, April 24, 2015. ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Susanne Morgan Morrow, MA, CI, CT Susie is a deaf-blind specialist and dually certified sign language interpreter. She has developed educational manuals and multi-media training materials on best practices regarding deaf-blind interpreting strategies. Susie was chairperson of the Deaf-Blind Member Section with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf for a decade and co-chair of the National Task Force on Deaf-Blind Interpreting (NTFDBI). In these roles she acted as the national liaison for deaf-blind related issues in the field of interpreting. Susie is currently the project coordinator for the New York Deaf-Blind Collaborative (NYDBC), a federally funded project that provides technical assistance on behalf of children and young adults who are deaf-blind. She does private consulting work through her business DB-TIP (Deaf-Blind Training, Interpreting & Professional Development).
