Mac's Meanderings
On Tuesday, September 23rd
the Board of Hudson Memorial
Preschool dedicated a beautiful new Playgarden. This is the play
area just west of Westminster Hall. The Playgarden is designed
to be a natural outdoor learning center for the children of the
preschool, the church and the neighborhood. It has been designed
so children can creatively use imaginative play: There is a small
amphitheater where children can be in the audience or be the star
of a show. There is an open wooden tee pee where children can
imagine the family life of Native Americans on the Plains years ago.
There are wooden stump seats around a slate dining room table
where children can pretend they are serving a family Thanksgiving
dinner. Low balance beams give children a chance to imagine
they are a gymnast in the Olympics. There are two front facades to houses where children can
pretend to welcome friends over for a play date. The list goes on and on: A water feature and
stream, a trike track, two sand box areas, a music center, a toddler slide carved into a small hill
and the restoration of a few older pieces of play equipment that still have life in them for the
future.
For over 40 years, Hudson Memorial has
had a vision of developmentally appropriate
early childhood education to meet the needs
of our local community. The Presbyterian
Church (USA) has always placed a high value
on education. This new Playgarden is a very
public reflection of that commitment. We
hope that this outdoor learning center will be
a tool that will draw families into the preschool
and the church because it speaks to our
priority of providing quality education through
creative play.
On the front of the dedication brochure
is Genesis 2:8: “And the Lord God planted
a garden…” The Spirit of God has indeed
used many people to bring about this garden off creative play. The idea for a new Playgarden
emerged a number of years ago just as the church was beginning a Capital Campaign to make
some significant repairs to the main buildings. The Session cleared the way for the preschool
board to raise the funds within the preschool community for the Playgarden project. Over
the past two years the preschool community raised almost $80,000 for the construction of the
Playgarden. $17,000 is still needed to pay off the project. Fundraisers are planned for the
upcoming year to finish paying for the project.
Special thanks need to be extended to church and Preschool Board members Shawn
Jackson and Tripp McDuffie who have worked tirelessly on this project. Shawn spearheaded
the fundraising plans, and Tripp spent much of this past summer checking in on the physical
implementation of the Playgarden. The Preschool Board and Administrative Staff as a whole
dedicated incredible amounts of time and thoughtful energy to this project. Over 70 individuals
made financial donations and many more did so by participating in numerous preschool
fundraisers. It has truly been a community effort. Now it is time to play!
O God we dedicate this Playgarden to your glory knowing that you rejoice in the imaginative
play of your children. May this outdoor learning center be a place where imagination,
relationships and recreation burst forth. Amen.
With Gratitude and Hope,
Mac Schafer

Happy Birthday!
Realizing that each year of life is a gift from God, the HMPC Foundation created the Birthday Offering program
to allow church members to express their gratitude to God through a gift to the church. Traditionally church
members have given a Birthday Gift of $1 for each year of life celebrated. These gifts to the HMPC Foundation help
secure the future vitality of the church’s ministries.
For your convenience, donations to the HMPC Foundation Birthday Fund may be made online at

Kharibino Mayum Mapour A Brief Story Of My Life
My father was called Mapuor. He died when I was only one. My mother is
called Ding. Together, my parents had four children, all boys, so I have no
sisters. According to our culture, the Dinka; girls are a source of wealth. If
you are born with a sister you will enjoy life.
Life was difficult when we were young, although my mother was a strong
and active woman, and managed to put me in school. She used to brew
local alcohol so as to support my education. When I completed secondary
school I knew that was the end of my education because there was no way
mother was going to afford university tuition.
So I thought there was no chance for me to further my studies beyond
secondary education. But I also knew that with God nothing is impossible,
so I started praying for a chance to study further than secondary school.
While I was praying, I decided to help in Maleng-Agok Primary School. I
volunteered for two years. For the two years of honesty, commitment and
service to my community, God answered my prayer. That is why I am here
today in Yei Teacher Training College.
My vision and motto is to develop my full potential through education by
obtaining a diploma or degree in education, if God wills. My second motto
is to change my community by giving quality education to children and
improve the life of my mother and brothers. I want to reflect what has been done to me by also
doing good to others.
I know that one can experience good life if God is the head; so I put Him first.
May God be with you forever.
Kharibino Mayum Mapour, Yei Teacher Teaching Training Scholarship Recipient in Memory of Rev.
Herb Underwood, thanks to the generosity of members and friends of HMPC.

Session Update from August 25, 2014
The Session discussed the goals for the coming year. The Session will finalize the goals at
a later meeting.
Deacon Shirley Hall reported that the Deacons are planning a congregational event on
November 15 entitled “Planning for Independence”. The event will be led by eldercare
consultant, Martha Grove.
Mary Schindo, chair of the Stewardship Committee, discussed the plans for the
upcoming Stewardship campaign. This year’s campaign will emphasize gratitude and
generosity.
Elders John James and Polly Bryant reported on the recent meeting of the New Hope
Presbytery in Smithfield on July 22.
The report from the Finance Committee concerning the review of the financial books
for 2013 was received. The report found the financial books to be in order.
The Session approved the expenditures for the repairs to the exterior of the building to
be funded from the Capital Campaign. Also approved were expenditures to replace
the treads on the stairs in Geneva Hall and replace the fire suppression system in the
kitchen. The “rainy day” fund will be used to fund these needed repairs.
Elder John James will serve as Session liaison to Matt Moorman.
HMPC continues to operate on a faith-based budget.

WELCOMING COMMITTEE
My family, like others at Hudson, recently experienced one of life’s big transitions
when we moved our daughter Maggie into her dorm for her freshman year at
Meredith College. While this was an exciting time, it was also scary and difficult,
as students and parents worried (some more than others) about how this new
chapter would unfold. No matter what your age, entering an established group,
where you do not know the customs, the relationships, and the attitudes of the
people, can be an anxious time.
At Meredith, a huge comfort on move-in day was that there seemed to be an army of
people giving messages of welcome to the freshmen. Students lined the entrance to
campus, banging on pots and pans, cheering and calling out greetings as freshman
families entered with cars full of belongings. Student advisors, “big sisters,” resident
assistants, faculty, student and alumna volunteers were there all day, telling us all how
excited they were that Maggie was joining them at Meredith, how much they loved
their experience there, and how eager they were to do something to help make her
experience just as special. “This is a great place,” they said, “and we’re glad you’re here
with us.”
Visiting a new church is also exciting, and also sometimes scary and difficult. Visitors
wonder if the congregation will be open, warm, and accepting. They wonder if they
can find their own place in an established group. Christ calls us to be just as warm and
enthusiastic in welcoming newcomers as that “welcoming army” on move-in day at
Meredith. We may not bang pots and pans, but find other ways to demonstrate how
great this place is, and how glad we are to have new faces among us, strengthening the
body of Christ.

Global Missions Offering a Variety of Pumpkins, Including one
for Breast Cancer Research called ‘Porcelain Doll’
Global Missions will be offering beautiful mums for sale, as well as a variety of specialty pumpkins
on Hudson’s Day of Service, October 4th. Our hours will be from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm, in the
parking lot next to Cranbrook Rd (Figure 1a).

In addition to having a lovely assortment of mums, we will have an amazing variety of specialty
pumpkins (Fig. 1b), grown by the Rudd Family of Greensboro. This is the same family who
supplies all those wonderful strawberries to Hudson each spring. In the middle left of the photo
(1b), you can see a smaller pinkish pumpkin – that’s Porcelain Doll. Did you know that when
the Rudd’s purchased the seeds for Porcelain Doll, they paid a little extra to support breast
cancer research! The Rudds are also supplying Hudson with Jarhead ale (2a), New England
Cheddar (2b) and some Jack-o-lanterns (2c).
All proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward high school student scholarships at Yei Teacher
Training College (YTTC) in Southern Sudan. The scholarships are for a 2-year course of study,
and each student will received a full scholarship to YTTC (worth $3500/year), plus each student
will receive a stipend of $500/year for travel from their homes near Maleng-agok to YTTC.
The terms of the scholarships require that the recipients teach at the Maleng-agok Primary
School for two years. The scholarships are given by the congregation of Hudson Memorial
Presbyterian Church in loving memory of Virginia Dolby (1924-2008) and Reverend Herbert
Underwood (1925-2011), who were remarkable supporters of the Maleng-agok Primary during
their lives.

Chrismon Crosses
The Cross symbolizes God's great sacrifice,
an offer of salvation to all of
humanity and the promise of
the resurrection. It is the most
commonly recognized and
universally accepted symbol
for Christianity. Crosses have
been used in floor plans
of churches, and placed
on walls to keep away evil. Many styles of
jewelry are made and many graves have
crosses to claim their promise of eternal life.
There are three different styles of crosses
that Jesus might have died upon. The first
style is the Tau cross. It is like the letter T. The
second is referred to as the Latin cross. It is
the most popular representation of the cross
today. It is most likely the form
Jesus died upon. The last style is
the Y-shaped cross. It is known
as the Furca or Upsillion cross. It
is also known as the
thieves cross from
the two thieves who
were crucified on each side of
Jesus.
This symbol of our Faith is hidden
throughout our Church. Have
fun searching, and look into the
history behind their meanings.
The Chancel Guild hopes you will enjoy the
education and the opportunity to join the
Chrismon-making sessions starting soon.
A New Pictorial Directory!
Plans are under way for the publication of a new
pictorial directory! We are partnering with Lifetouch
to professionally produce our 2015 edition. Our goal
is to have every member & regularly attending
guest professionally photographed by Lifetouch.
We ask that you please take the opportunity to be
part of this important connection tool and historical
document for our church.
Portraits will be taken on the following dates and
times:
Tuesday, October 28th, 2:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Wednesday, October 29th, 2:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Thursday, October 30th, 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Saturday, November 1st, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Thursday, November 6th, 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Friday, November 7th, 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Saturday, November 9th, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

and clicking the church directory link. If you sign up online and give us your email address,
you will receive a reminder email with a $10 off coupon. For those who prefer to sign up in
person, you may do so on each Sunday after services.
You may have as many pictures taken as you wish, and select the one you want in the
directory. If you want a separate picture on a Christmas card, that is an option. There will
be brochures each Sunday that you can pick up in the worship service that outline your
options and costs. Pictures should be back in time to give as gifts.
Each member or family will receive an 8 X 10 photo of the picture going in the directory at
no charge. There will be no pressure by Lifetouch to buy pictures. You, obviously, will be
shown all the pictures taken, and should you decide to purchase pictures to gift, you can
pick the package and style you want.

picture to be taken at another location in our area that is using Lifetouch so that you can
be included in our new pictorial directory.
Adopt A Green Space
The Property Committee is looking for volunteers (individuals or groups)
to “Adopt a Green Space” to help maintain the church’s inviting and
hospitable appearance. Our goal is to divide the church’s property into
smaller and more manageable sections to help maintain the trees and
shrubs without being an overwhelming task. Please contact Pat Cash,
[email protected], 787-1086 or Carl Rohs, [email protected], 6766759 for more details.

God is moving and working through this community of faith. During worship this summer people
had a chance to write down what they were grateful to God for on leaf-shaped pieces of
paper. Listen to your fellow church members and their words of gratitude for God’s work in
this church:
“I am grateful for the people of Hudson who serve
Meals on Wheels to Raleigh residents in need.”
“I am thankful for the support of the church in times of grieving.”
“I am so very grateful for the wonderful staff at HMPC who lead and guide us with such love.”
“The close bonds and wonderful influence of my (Presbyterian Women’s) Circle….”
“My youth group & youth council & Frank!”
“Men’s Bible study on Tuesdays.”
“I am grateful for worship and fellowship as always. The love of people through Jesus Christ.”
These are small windows into the stories of live being transformed by the work of God’s Spirit
through this community. We give our time, treasure and talents through the church because
God brought the church into being, and God chooses to work through the church. We give
because of the tremendous generosity of God.
The ministry of this church happens because of God’s faithfulness and your generosity. All
the ministry of this church is funded because of your financial gifts. We now begin turning our
attention to 2015, and we want you to prayerfully begin considering how you will financially
respond to God’s generosity in your life. We ask that you would pledge a percentage of the
income to the ministry we currently do and the ministry God is leading us to add in 2015.
Pledge information will be mailed to you in the coming weeks and will also be available online.
We pray that you continue to commit your pledge to God through this church by Sunday,
November 2nd.
Psalm126:3 - The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced! Thank you for your
commitment!

Deacon Ministries "Meditations from A Simple Path"
The following is taken from Mother Teresa in “Mediations from A Simple Path”
“The password of the early Christians was JOY
So let us still serve the Lord with joy.
Joy is love, joy is prayer, joy is strength.
God loves a person who gives joyfully
And if you give joyfully you always give more.
A joyful heart is the result of a heart burning with love.
Works of love are always works of joy.
We don't need to look for happiness;
If we have love for others we’ll be given it.
It is the gift of God.”
It is my prayer that we fulfill God’s purpose in all areas of our life with JOY!
