Lot # 3178 1860’s Union Flask
1860 Aqua Union flask, pint, clean,
mint condition; these are very
popular. 100-150 different varieties,
according to McKearin. During the
1860’s and 1870’s various Pittsburgh
glass houses turned out vast
quantities of the “union” flasks, having
on one side a shield with hands,
presumably clasped in reconciliation, and above the shield, the word
“Union” and 13 stars and on the other side, an eagle, wings raised and
parallel with the body which rests on the shield, from the lower sides
of which the thunderbolt and olive branch extend. In the eagle’s beak
is a long ribbon or pennant. Some say it has developed into a “Dove of
Peace” and is no longer an eagle. The clasped hands and “Union” are
assumed to lend color to this transformation and it must be admitted
that the outline of the bird’s body and head do appear more dovelike
than “eaglish.” However, the typical thunderbolt seems an incongruity
in connection with the dove of peace and traditional olive branch,
which is always shown in the bill of the dove of peace is missing. [From
“American Glass” by George S. and Helen Mckearin, p.479] Est. $100 ~ $200 FHWAC# 27033

Lot # 3182 Washington / Jackson
Flask 1840’s Aqua, quart size, mint
condition. G.I-42 . “It is interesting to note
that the legend ‘The Father of His Country’
appears in connection with Washington’s
portrait only on flasks produced at the
Dyottville Glassworks, Philadelphia,
beginning with the candidacy of Zachary
Taylor for president. It may be a reflection
of the growth of hero worship that on
the earlier flasks Washington’s military
prowess is emphasized by depicting him
in uniform whereas by the 1840’s it is
Washington The Statesman, elevated to
the Hall of Fame as the ‘Father of His Country,’ and appropriately
represented by a classical bust.” [From “American Glass” by George
S. and Helen McKearin] The Jackson side of the flask depicts him in
military uniform and lettering: “A little more grape Captain Bragg.”

business items
from the El
Dorado Brewing
Co. of Stockton.
Thousands of
labels for their
Valley Brew Pale, several receipt books, and two ledgers with pencil
216
entries from the early 20th century.
The original brewery was founded in 1853 by brothers Peter
and Daniel Rothenbush, and produced a product known as “Steam
Beer” and called “El Dorado Beer. An article in the Stockton Record
in 1953, (commemorating the 100th anniversary of the El Dorado
Brewing Co.) mentioned other western breweries began to copy the
“Steam Beer” of El Dorado. The original brewery building between
American and Stanislaus and Park and Oak Streets was partially
destroyed by a fire in 1877. It was soon bebuilt of brick and survived
for another 50 years.
Around the turn of the 20th century, bottling methods
changed and “Crown tops” were the design. Valley Brew became the
most prestigious product of the brewery, capturing awards at the 1904
St. Louis World’s Fair and the 1905 California State Fair, the PanamaPacific Exposition and in Eureka, California in 1915.
During the prohibition era the brewery was the first in the
industry to develop a product with less than 0.5% alcohol, so survived
making “near beer” called Special Valley. (It was awarded 12 gold
medals!) Est. $1,000 ~ $1,500 FHWAC# 25077

Creek The Crystal Bookmark
Group c1894 Two identical
heart shaped silver-colored
metal bookmarks, one with
a red and one a green string
and tassel attached to the top.
Although The Crystal was not
found specifically in Cripple
Creek, its location there make
sense in due part to its location
on Bennett Ave. Tents and
cabins began to spring up and a mining district was organized in the
Cripple Creek area in1891. Denver real estate men Horance Bennett
and Julius Myers owned much of the land in the area, so they platted
eighty acres for a town site and began selling lots. Cripple Creek
quickly began establishing many businesses such as saloons and
brothels. Initially the houses of “ill-repute” were located along Bennett
Avenue, the main street of the town. The “ladies” were then moved
one block south to Myers Avenue, which became known as the Red
Light District. Known as one of the liveliest streets in the Old West, the
phrase “There’ll be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight” was coined on
this street filled with brothels, dance halls and saloons. Est. $100 ~ $200 FHWAC# 25925

interesting things about this license is that the cost was fifteen dollars.

saloon beer trays bearing

her name from her first
husband, miner Harvey Doe. The pair worked his mines in Central City
to limited success, but the marriage and the mines failed. She met and
married Senator Horace Tabor, discoverer of the famous Matchless
Mine in Leadville. Tabor’s fortune disappeared, and the pair were near
penniless in the 1890’s, about when these trays were made. He died
in the spring of 1899, and Baby Doe Tabor moved back to Leadville.

Lot # 3227 Large c.1890s Oak Back Bar The top of this
handsome oak back bar features two large glass doors with locks
and keys. This is where the bartender kept the high priced liquor, in
sight, but out of reach. Includes adjustable shelves. Flanking the large,
central beveled mirror are two small beveled mirrors. This display is
wired for lighting and includes a brass fixture with two etched drop
tulip shades.
This is reportedly the smallest model of Brunswick Back Bar
(not confirmed). The front has a worn spot on the wood that matches
the size and shape of a brass Brunswick identification plaque. This
spot would not be there unless a metal plaque had once been there.
This lends support to it being a Brunswick manufacture.

large drawers flanked by two side drawers, all with original hardware.
