Music therapy
Music therapy is used to promote the participant’s cognitive, social,
physical, and psychosocial health and wellbeing. Accredited music
therapists use music and musical elements to encourage self-awareness,
creative expression, communication and learning. In group therapy
settings, music is also used to help facilitate interaction with peers.
Age
up to 21
Learn to play an instrument! Clients can choose from a variety
of traditional and adapted instruments and innovative music
technology. Instruments include: the Virtual Musical Instrument
(VMI), piano, guitar, voice, violin, percussion and ukelele.
Different teaching methods are used, including elements of
the Suzuki method and the Figurenotes notation system.
(The VMI is music software developed at Holland Bloorview. The program
allows musicians to see themselves on a TV screen with colourful shapes
and objects that make different musical sounds when touched. When the
musician moves through the shapes on the screen, music is produced.)
