May 2015 - Hollis Grade School

Hollis Grade School
WORKING TOGETHER FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS
HOME AND SCHOOL CONECTION
Issue 9
Mrs. Lee Ann Meinhold, Superintendent/Principal
May 2015
FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT:
Each new school year brings opportunities for academic growth and growth in all areas
of development. The Leader in Me at Hollis Grade School, with the implementation of
the 7 Habits, encourages growth through goal setting. Research has shown that the
simple act of writing a goal greatly increases the chances of accomplishing the goal. If
the goal is broken down into action steps and the action steps are tracked, goals have
an even greater percentage of success.
At Hollis, students have written their own academic and personal goals in their
Leadership Portfolio. You will gain a lot of information on how your child is doing if you
ask them to tell you about these goals. The goals chosen are meaningful to your child
so be sure to practice Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood as
they explain.
The Leadership Portfolio idea can also be used in your home this summer.
● Goals can be created for family activities, such as reading together, eating dinner at
the table, or doing an activity together.
● Academic goals can also be set for the students individually, such as reading a set
number of books over the summer (participating in the Alpha Park Library Summer
Reading program can help), practicing math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division depending on the grade level), writing stories about their summer activities,
etc.
● Household chores can also be utilized to set goals. Examples are making their bed,
picking up their room, doing the dishes, helping with the laundry, mowing the lawn, etc.
● If your student is involved in summer sports, this is another opportunity for goal setting
– a number of hits, stolen bases, put outs in baseball or softball, improving their times in
swimming, lowering their score in golf, etc.
Involve everyone in the family in choosing meaningful goals and action steps. Post the
goal and the action steps in a visible place, like the refrigerator or a bulletin board in
your student’s bedroom, and be sure to track and celebrate progress!

REPORTING ABSENCES & TARDIES
When your child is going to be absent from school, please call the
office at 697-1325 before 9:00 AM. It is mandated that school
personnel have contact with the parents of absent children each
day that the student is absent. To report your child absent
before 8:15 AM, call the main school telephone number at (309)
697-1325. After your call is answered, you will hear a beep and
you may leave your message. Please also call stating the reason your child is tardy.
Tardiness needs a phone call to be excused. Also students need to be signed-in in the
office when they are tardy and/or coming in from being ill. When caregivers take the
time to do this, student safety is guaranteed!
