DEAR FELLOW REDEEMED:
Before Columbus set sail from Spain into the unknown, it was believed that the world ended not far beyond
Gibraltar. In fact, this idea was so soundly believed, that it was expressed in the Spanish Royal Motto which
read, “Ne Plus Ultra,” meaning: “There is no more beyond here.”
But as we know, when Columbus returned, he had found a whole new would out there, and so the Royal Motto
was rendered meaningless. Thus, Queen Isabella simply eliminated the first word, causing the motto to read,
“Plus Ultra,” meaning: “There is plenty more beyond.”
Having just recently worshiped together at the open, empty tomb; and having recently focused on the joy and
glory of Jesus’ resurrection, we might be inclined to think that there is no more beyond here. As a result, we
might be content to slow down the pace a bit and slip into a typical summer mode.
However! Easter is the discovery of a whole new would out there…a world in which we can continue to chant
the phrase: “CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED! HALLELUJAH!”
It is precisely because Easter is behind us that there is plenty more beyond—“Today in paradise,” remember?
And “Because I live you will live also.”
Now, it’s to Pentecost that we are looking forward, and as we receive, anew, the Holy Spirit, we will again
discover that our pilgrimage has indeed not come to where it can be said: “No more beyond here.” Instead, it
is always, “There’s plenty more beyond!”
I eagerly join you in going for it.

Flamingo Fundraiser
They’re back! Up to 50 flamingos can be placed on the person
of your choosing’s lawn by the youth of Holy Emmanuel.
Cost is $1 per flamingo with most common flock of 25 or 50.
Congregation members can pick up a slip at the connection
center or online http://holyemmanuel.org/youth-ministry/
flamingo-fundraiser/. Monies will go toward the summer
mission trip to Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Events at Holy Emmanuel
End of the year BBQ
Join us for our end of the year celebration and BBQ as we
complete our year long journey through The Story. The Open
Arms children will sing at the 10:45 service and after worship
everyone is invited to the grill out, play lawn games and enjoy
bounce house for the kids.
2015 Winter ECC Scholarships Awards
The ECC Scholarship Fund Committee recently awarded
three $250 scholarships. The winners were presented their
scholarships at the second service on February 8th.

Holy Emmanuel established the Open Arms Christian Early
Childhood Center Scholarship Endowment Fund in October
2011. The ECC Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance/
scholarships for children attending Open Arms. The first
scholarships were awarded in the fall of 2012. To date, 19
scholarships in the total amount of $4550 have been awarded.
You can strengthen Holy Emmanuel’s ministry at Open Arms by
your gifts to the ECC Scholarship Fund, to celebrate a Birthday,
Anniversary or any other special occasion or to honor loved ones
who have passed. You can also help grow this ministry fund of
through gifts from your estate in the form of cash, stocks, bonds,
life insurance, real estate or personal property. Estate planning
can help maximize your stewardship of financial resources.
Your contribution of any amount helps us grow this ministry by
awarding additional scholarships.
Our goal is to award approximately 5% of the fund value annually.

Richard Yurik Memorial Marathon
We will walk a marathon (26.2 miles) on Saturday, August 1st.
The plan is to go to Duluth on Friday, July 31st. Early Saturday
morning we will drive to Two Harbors and then walk back to
Duluth. Depending on your pace, it will probably take 8-9
hours to finish the entire marathon. You can walk as much as
you like, no need to do it all.
Book Fair
On Sunday May 17th we will hold a book fair in the narthex.
50% of the sale of these books go toward the purchase of books
for our OPen Arms classrooms.

On May 17th Holy Communion will not be celebrated in the
10:45 AM service the Open Arms activity.
On May 24th Holy Communion will be celebrated in the 10:45

Parenting in the Pew:
When the congregation prays today, take your child’s hands in
yours and hold them as we pray. Help your child respond with
the rest of the congregation to a petition of the prayers by gently
squeezing their hands. Help your child end the prayer with
AMEN. Those of us who do not have children will listen for the
AMENs from our youngest worshipers and be encouraged!
Area Events
ASCENSION DAY WORSHIP SERVICE
You are invited to attend the Bloomington Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod Joint Ascension Day worship service at
Redemption Church on May 14th at 6:30 PM. Rev. Dr. Utech
will be the guest preacher. Make plans now to join your
neighborhood brothers and sisters for this joint service on
Ascension Day.
Redemption Lutheran Church is located at 927 East Old
Shakopee Road.
Fun in the Son:
The second Saturday of each month parents and kids are invited
to Fun in the Son from 11:30-1pm. We meet at a different park
with our first being May 9th at Gene Kelly Park. Each person
brings their own respective sack lunch. Parents mingle and kids
can play. Kind of like a pre-planned play date!
VBS
Sign up now for Everest VBS 2015. Ages potty trained thru
5th grade are invited. Join us June 15-19 from 9:00am-11:30
each day. Cost is $10 per student for the week. Register online

“A Taste Of Ethnic Ministries”
LINC Twin Cities is sponsoring “A Taste Of Ethnic Ministries”
on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Our
Savior Lutheran Church 670 Johnson Pkwy, St. Paul 55106.
Come, see and celebrate with our LCMS Minnesota South
District’s ethnic ministries. Your will get to experience a
multicultural worship service, taste authentic ethnic food and
hear what the Lord is doing through ethnic ministries in our
District we reach out to the lost in our diverse communities.
Time, Talents & Treasures
A donation of $50 in advance will help to send ethnic women
to the LWML convention this summer. Send checks to LINC

Spring Clean Up
We will be having our sprin cleaning of the church and
grounds on Saturday May 16th beginning at 8:00 am.
COMMUNITY OUTDOOR WORSHIP
A joint LCMS (6 church) outdoor service will be conducted
on Sunday, June 28th at Normandale Lake Band-shell in
Bloomington at 11:00 AM. A brief patriotic observance will
be presented following the worship service. A shuttle will be
provided from St. Michael’s parking lot. Be sure to bring your
folding lawn chairs. If rain occurs the service will be held at St.
Michael Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
NOTE: For those who cannot or prefer not to worship outdoors
we will conduct our regular summer 9:30 AM service at Holy
Emmanuel that day with Chapel Bible Class at 8:30 AM.
VBS Decorating Party:
Join us in decorating for VBS 2015 and building mountains. June
6th and June 13th 2:00-7:00pm both days. Come freely, for as
much or as little as you want.
Babysitters Needed:
With a growing amount of young families involved in board
meetings childcare is an increasing need for evening meetings. Four
of our high schoolers who have been faithful to serve in this capacity
will soon be graduating. Please, please, please consider volunteering
for this need. Talk to Kristi if you can help.
Flowers
Altar Flowers
The opportunity to donate Altar/Chancel Flowers for our
worship services is available for all members and friends of
Holy Emmanuel. The cost for a single bouquet is $36.50 which
includes delivery. A “Flower Chart” is posted in the Lobby on
the bulletin board by the Office. If you would like to donate
flowers please place your name on the chart by the desired
date and indicate if the flowers are given in honor of a special
occasion. Make checks payable to Holy Emmanuel and write
“Altar Flowers” on the memo line.
VEAP
Food donations are needed, please remember to bring your
non-parishable food items for VEAP. Financial donation to
VEAP are also accepted.
Volunteers Needed
Open Arms is looking for volunteers to come to Open Arms
during the week to interact with the children. Activities you may
be involved in while volunteering include: reading books, putting
puzzles together, assisting with art projects, encouraging children
in their play, or other activities the teacher may need help with.
Volunteers will need to have a background check as well as some
training. If you are interested in volunteering at Open Arms please
sign the form at the welcome desk. You will be contacted by Ms.
Jen to set up a time for training. Any amount of time you are able
to volunteer is greatly appreciated.

“New Summer Program 40 Days to a Heathier Life”
The Daniel Plan is coming: Starting on Wednesday evening
(6PM) June 3rd we launch the 6 week program by Rick
Warren focused on 40 Days to a Heathier Life. Named for
the Biblical prophet Daniel who challenged himself to eat lots
of vegetables. The goal would be to help us create our own
individual lifestyle of faith, food, fitness and friends. Each
agenda will include a healthy meal, a small study and perhaps
a short neighborhood walk; babysitting will be provided.

Rummage Sale
It is not to early to start saving items for this years rummage
sale. The sale this year will be September 10,11 & 12. Please

ministry Faith Comes By Hearing to bring the pure Word of God
to our troops while on (and preparing for) deployment. The PAril
Noisy Offering raised $278.65 for Bridging.

The Journey begins on Wednesday June 3rd at 6:00.
The Daniel Plan is not just another “diet”. It’s a healthy lifestyle based on the Old Testament story of
Daniel, who rejected the king’s rich food in order to honor God’s best for him and his friends. Daniel
was a young Israelite carried into captivity when the Babylonians invaded Israel. The Babylonian king,
Nebuchadnezzar, decided to train the best and the brightest of these captives so they could be placed in
positions of authority within the government.
King Nebuchadnezzar instituted a three-year training program and while they were being trained, the
young captives were to be fed the same food found on the royal table. But Daniel knew this wouldn’t be a
healthy diet, so he asked that he and three of his friends be allowed to eat healthier, and at the end of ten
days, they looked better and were more robust than those who ate the king’s menu (Daniel 1:1-21).
Daniel’s request was not about a diet plan; rather, he understood God wanted him to live a healthy lifestyle
so he could serve God no matter where he was located. Healthy living requires faith as the foundation,
trusting that God’s way is the best way, while following his prescription for your health.
At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So
the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. Daniel 1:15-16

We pray in the Lord’s Prayer for daily bread. The Small Catechism teaches that “Daily bread includes
everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing,
shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout children, devout
workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self-control,
good reputation, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.” This is a pretty comprehensive list of
what God provides for our daily bread. But all of this, eventually, and finally, will be taken away from
us—not because God is punishing us, but because this is not the goal of life. There is more to life than
these things. In fact, we will truly live when all these things are taken away, and we no longer need to pray for daily bread.
For God our Father in heaven is calling us home to Himself. We are just sojourners here. We are on a journey in the wilderness
of this world toward our true home, the land of promise, in heaven. Everything that we have in this world and this life will be left
behind.
But as much as we long for heaven, as much as we eagerly await that time when our Lord will take us from this vale of tears to
Himself in heaven, we still struggle with letting go of what we have in this world. We still suffer the temptation to hold on to this
life and this world and the things of this life and this world. But this is not our true home. And as good as this life is, and it is
often by God’s grace very good, the life to come in His kingdom far exceeds it.
And giving, stewardship, is a practice that teaches us to look to, long for, and trust in the eternal realities rather than the earthly.
It teaches us to loosen our hold and let go of those things that keep us earthly minded, so that we may look what our Father in
heaven has in store for us for all eternity. It teaches us to concentrate on what God has done, is doing, and will do for us instead
of the constant work-a-day world and noise that we have here. It teaches us to long for that better country, the heavenly one. For
God is not ashamed to be called our God. And He has prepared for us a city, His city, not made with hands.
Thus we give generously to the church, to our family, to those in society. We release our grasp on what would keep our focus on
the here and now, so that we would be free to receive and rejoice in what our future shall be in heaven. We invest where moth
and rust will not destroy. We put our treasures so that our hearts will follow them (Matt 6:21; Luke 12:34). For we are only of any
earthly good, when we are truly heavenly minded. Make this your practice for your own good eternally and your neighbors’ good
temporally.
