Ascension of the Lord
Acts 1:1–11; Ps 47:2–3, 6–7, 8–9
Eph 1:17–23 or 4:1–13 or 4:1–7, 11–13; Mk 16:15–20
Luke begins his second volume, Acts of the Apostles,
by narrating Jesus’s ascension. His first book was
concerned with “all that Jesus did and taught until the
day he was taken up”. Now he begins the story of
Jesus’s disciples continuing the mission. Before his
ascension, Jesus had promised them that they “will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you”;
empowered by the Spirit, they are to be “witnesses in
Jerusalem … and to the ends of the earth”. Their
mission is our mission too, for we share in the same
Spirit.
Writing to the Ephesians, Paul prays “that the God of
our Lord Jesus Christ … may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation”. Christ Jesus, who was raised
from the dead, sits at God’s “right hand in the heavens”. And he has dominion over all creation, even the
heavenly beings, “above every principality, authority,
power, and dominion”. Here Paul starts to develop
his image of the church as Christ’s body. He will develop this idea further, reminding us that we who
share the one bread are called to become one body.
Today’s Gospel text, though accepted as inspired
and canonical, is not found in some of the oldest
manuscripts of Mark; some ancient manuscripts of
Mark omit any mention of the risen Christ and his ascension. But without these events the story of Jesus
is incomplete. In today’s text Jesus commissions his
disciples to “go into the whole world and proclaim the
gospel to every creature”. Then he “was taken up into
heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God”.
The disciples follow Jesus’s command to go forth
preaching the word, “while the Lord worked with
them”.
For Reflection: In what way can I witness to the gospel in my everyday life? How effective do I think the
gospel would be without the resurrection?

Faith Formation
Exploring the Trinity
Join us for the final Generations of Faith session of
the season on the Trinity on May 17th at 10 AM or
May 18th at 6 PM in the Gym. We will be taking a
look at modern theologians and what they have to
say about this topic and looking at the history that
got us to where we are today.
All in the parish are welcome. We open with a meal
and opening presentation, then we discuss the topic in a more hands on manner in age group break
outs. If this is your first session, we wave the fee.
Planning to Marry?
The Diocese requires that
couples planning to marry
begin their preparation with
the church at least six
months in advance. Couples must contact Father

All-Day Marriage Preparation sessions will be offered in the parish on June 21st. Couples may

Our summer vacation bible school will
be June 22-26th from 9 AM to 11:30 AM
in the school building. Children 3 years
old to 6th grade are welcome to join us.
The fee is $15 per child if registration is
received by June 15th, after June 15th

Basketball league for High School
and Middle School students.
Games will be played on Thursday evenings from June 11
through August 13th (8 games).

A special thanks to Maureen
Steinberg who chaired our
bowling league again this
year. Because of her willingness to serve, many people
enjoyed an evening of bowling every other Sunday evening. The league was unique
because it consisted of members of Holy Name and Holy Shepherd Lutheran
Church in St John. It’s was a non-sanctioned league just for fun. This year, Team Leftovers, consisting of
Bob and Maureen Steinberg and Phil and Roberta
Allan took first place.
We are looking now for more teams to join us for next
year. Each team will consist of 4 bowlers. This league
will bowl every other Sunday at 4:50 p.m. from mid
-September through April. If you cannot bowl on the
appointed evening, you can either have a substitute
bowl for you or you can "bowl out" any time before the

would like to recognize their accomplishment at our
Graduation Mass, Sunday, June 14th at 9 AM. At this
Mass, we will also be remembering the souls of the
deceased in the class of 2015.

Knights of Columbus Corporate Communion on Sunday, May 31, at the 9 AM Mass here at Holy Name.
Tess Martinez
Tess Martinez was nominated by Sister Barbara Sable, SS.C.M. for the Servant Leadership Award that
was celebrated on April 19th at the Cathedral. Tess
attends Hanover Central High School where she is a
member of the National Honor Society, the Varsity
Tennis team, and the Varsity Golf team. She volunteers as an assistant coach for the sixth grade girls
basketball team. Tess volunteers for the Christmas
Shoebox project, and each year she collects toys,
school supplies and seasonal items to fill over 200
shoe boxes which she helps wrap as gifts for those
who are in need. She takes to heart the words of Gandhi, that "the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
