Catholic Questions
Q. Why is it that Lay Communion Ministers don’t offer
a blessing for the Children and those not
receiving Communion any more?
A.
One of the reasons for the changes in brought about
with the promulgation of our Roman Missal in 2011.
In the particular context of the Mass, there is a difference
between the nature of the ministerial (ordained)
priesthood from the general (non-ordained) priesthood,
which everyone gains by virtue of their Baptism, of the
lay faithful. A priest has a sacramental character
imprinted on his soul from the day of his ordination with
Holy Chrism, to be ‘another Christ’ (alter Christus), and
it’s for this reason that only ordained members of the
Church should give blessings at Mass. This privilege
extends to the other members of the clergy
including deacons and bishops.
Outside the context of the Mass or other liturgical
contexts in which the clergy is officiating, a lay person is
permitted to, and encouraged to bless themselves at meals
or say a prayer over their own children before bedtime
etc. It takes a while to change a defective practice that
has been in existence for many years. It is by word of
mouth and simply practicing the Church’s teaching over
and over again is the best approach.
Parents wishing to have their children blessed at
Communion or any other time should
bring them to the priest or
deacon for that blessing.
Hike for Life – The annual Action Life

Dear
Young
People,
“Freedom Fifty-Five”
There is an investment firm that calls their financial
retirement plan “Freedom Fifty-Five.” In their TV ads,
they show people resting beside a beautiful lake or
traveling to exotic locations. This all based on the premise that
if you prepare for retirement you will enjoy a life of leisure, a
life of freedom from financial worries. And we spend a lot of
time as we near retirement age worrying about that time. Will
with have enough money coming in so that we can do some of
those things we have put off? Will we stay sufficiently healthy,
so that we might enjoy our retirement years? Yes, many of us
worry about our retirement, but what about our future life? But
like it or not we also need to prepare for death and, in particular,
the life to come after our deaths. Jesus tells us that if we love
this life too much, we may lose it, but if we hate this life we will
gain eternal life. This statement was a predictor of his own
suffering and death. His body was tortured, and killed, and
planted in the ground, but then God raised him up. His
resurrection resulted in the salvation of the world – his death
bore much fruit indeed. This puts a whole new complexion on
dying, and on our own preparation for death. What Jesus is
saying is that we need to die to this world, to die to those nonspiritual things which distract us from our true destiny which is
eternal life with him in heaven. So instead of worrying about
retirement, we should be thinking about our progress in our
preparation for our own death. And the best way to prepare is to
stop worrying about tomorrow, and to act today in accordance
with Christ’s commandments to love God and neighbour. We
prepare for the next life by caring for others. God is gracious
and merciful. His love compels us to treat others with mercy
and kindness. When we do something for one of Christ’s little
ones, we do it for Christ. Let’s get ready for the next life, an life
of joy and happiness with Jesus, by treating others with mercy
and love just as Christ has treated us. Once we are truly ready
“Freedom Fifty-Five” will seem to be a trivial goal indeed.
