March is Literacy Month
Rotary is truly about sharing. It is about gifts. It is about taking responsibility
together. It is about providing skills that give people a chance to be better. It
is about learning that we all have the same hopes, dreams, needs and goals.
The emphasis placed on water projects, hunger, health, literacy and fellowship really is the basis for our success as Rotarians. As Rotarians working
together we are able to help meet these challenges.
March is the month that we showcase literacy. All across the world, Rotarians
note the importance of reading and publicizing the needs and lack of resources leading to poor literacy rates. Around the world, we support numerous programs that help children and adults to gain the ability to read. The inability to
read translates into many difficulties. Safely driving a car, voting in an election,
using a newspaper, applying for a job or having Mom read a bedtime story are
just a few of the challenges to be overcome. Literacy is a basic skill that helps
us to fight poverty, increase productivity and gain skills to help each other. As
Rotarians we are working to fight illiteracy one person at a time.
Did you know that our Club, under Marvin Ivy’s leadership, started the literacy
program at the Hondo Public Library? We have promoted, sponsored and
been personally involved in Literacy projects for many years on a local, district
and international level and will continue to do so for years to come. That’s
what Rotarians do!

We collect Plastic Bags (any size from any store) for use by the Medina County Nutrition Center (to package Meals On Wheels delivered by volunteers each week)
* We A-L-L have Ink Cartridges which can be collected for use by schools & churches
(in Hondo, you may take your used cartridge to the Castroville Computers of Hondo
store on 18th Street where they will be picked up periodically by a Rotarian for delivery
to Hondo HS, where Sally Bader, BPA sponsor, uses them for that organization.)
* Do you know that Soup Cans and Cereal Boxes have Reward Points which can
also be collected for use by schools & churches to get a bit of financial support - takes
about 20 seconds (Interact is going to start a project for their school so please contribute and we’ll make sure the kids get the credit!)

Highlights from Feb. 26 meeting
In Attendance: 24 Rotarians, 1 On Leave, 2 guests from Southwest Gulf Railroad
Co. & Vulcan – Alma Martinez, Erik Remmert, soon-to-be-Rotarian Victoria Hammond, and Speaker Janet Crain, RN.
Guests were welcomed by President Jean, including Cynthia Prieto and Victoria
Hammond, whose induction is scheduled for the March 12th Business Meeting. She
stated that there were a few Bylaw questions requiring clarification so the vote to approve Bylaws would be taken at the next meeting. The Committee is to meet with the
Membership Committee to further discuss some items.
Upcoming Rotary District Conference and other sessions was discussed. Jean encouraged members, particularly the new Board-elect, to attend as many of these
seminars and meetings as possible as they are excellent Rotary learning tools. It was
reported that a past district governor would be coming to speak in the near future, a
true example of what a leader and Rotarian exemplifies as she has a full time job, a
disabled child, and still met her duties as district governor.
Rotary Minute was the celebration of 110 years of Rotary (Feb. 23) the world’s first
and one of the largest non-profit service organizations. Founder Paul Harris’ longing
for friendship was one of his inspirations for founding Rotary in 1905. In 1935, he
wrote “It is conceivable that Rotary might have been born under sunnier skies, in a
climate more equable, and in a city of mental composure; but many will contend that
there could have been no more favorable birthplace for Rotary than paradoxical Chicago, where the battle for civic righteousness was being so fiercely waged.”
Final arrangements for Rotary Day, March 19th, were given, it being noted that Invitation Letters would be sent by email within the next few days.
Chris Kailipaka introduced Janet Crain, RN, the Wesley Nurse officing at the First
United Methodist Church in Hondo. After she gave us a brief bio and history of her
past occupations, she explained the program as a faith-based, holistic one committed to serving through education, health promotion, and collaboration. As she listed
her duties as Wesley Nurse, she handed out information regarding the mission of
Methodist Healthcare Ministries (established in 1995) and its advocacy with similarly focused organizations. The Ministries span 80 sites throughout South Texas and
is the largest geographic outreach program. They partner with South Texas Rural
Health Clinic. Grants given by the program for various health-related issues totaled
$22,344,821. Upcoming programs are a Family Health Fair to be held Wed., March
18, at Woolls, 5-7 p.m.; in collaboration with AgriLife Extension, a Master of Memory 6-lesson series at noon on Thursdays in Hondo and Tuesdays in Devine; Men’s
Health presentation June 7 at Methodist Church; a 5-lesson series, Do Well, Be Well
with Diabetes beginning in July at the Methodist Church. They also have 2 exercise programs at the FUMC, as well as grief support, a Rx assistance program, and

Diane reported on the raising of funds for a new Hondo Public Library in the way of
Honor Bricks ($50), Slap Your Brand ($250), as well as other means of donations
honoring grandparents, teachers, children’s names shown on balloons, and furniture sponsorships. President stated that the Rotary sponsored bookshelf had been
ordered and that a plaque would be placed at the end of the bookshelf. For more

dresses to be sold at a very reduced price to help the community’s youth.
