Pastor’s Message
Last Sunday morning was FUN! And not just kids told me
that! Our Pentecost celebration was a party in every
aspect . . . Spirit-filled music with handbells, chimes and
great singing . . . helium filled balloons . . . special party
clothes in every shade of red . . . party-themed food
like cinnamon rolls and fruit the kids combined to look
like tongues of flame . . . simultaneous Bible readings in
German, French, Tagalog, Spanish and English. It was a
spectacular celebration of that first Pentecost when
God let loose a vast power on the world!
When the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ first
disciples the world was changed. His friends, once
followers and learners, became apostles – those sent
out into the world to proclaim a message. Like a
tornado, the wind of the Spirit roared through the Upper
Room where the disciples were gathered. It blew away
their fear and cowardice, taking them into the streets
and around the world to distant lands. The wind of the
Spirit filled their mouths with God’s praise as they told
the story of Jesus and performed acts of power in his
name. The wind and the flame took those who were
cowering behind locked doors and filled them with courage, with passion and the power to speak to the hearts
of those who longed for hope and the assurance of God’s love. The Holy Spirit was no tame, gentle wind. This
Spirit was a forest fire, a hurricane, a power never seen before.
That same Spirit of power has been set loose in our midst! God has carried us through a successful sale and
move from our old campus to new, exciting adventures ahead. We’re discovering new ways to do VBS, Day
Camp – this year partnering with another church to reach even deeper into our community. Families of
preschoolers are meeting for Play Dates in the Park a couple times a month. It’s been so much fun that we’re
planning a monthly Hope “Picnic in the Park” for the whole congregation. It’s an informal gathering – an hour or
two – at Ronald Reagan Park (Margarita and Rancho Vista). Bring supper (maybe a drive thru burger??), a lawn
chair or blanket and we’ll simply enjoy a summer evening together. The first Picnic in the Park will be 6 pm
Monday, June 8.
At 6 pm on Wednesday, June 17, we’ll begin offering a mid-week experience we’re calling Pizza & Praise. At 6
pm we’ll gather at Redhawk for Pizza (salad, too!) and fellowship. At 6:30 we’ll take a little time to experience
God’s Word – maybe sharing a poem, story or drawing, a camp song or original composition. We’ll experience
God’s Word in Holy Communion and the gift of community. We will draw on the readings from the previous
Sunday, but in a new, experiential way. Children – young
and old – will be encouraged to move, laugh and enjoy the
gift of the family of God while we grow in faith together!
This summer, I wonder . . . what would happen if you and I
opened ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit? What
might God accomplish through us if you and I invited the
Holy Spirit to fill our lives and give us the courage to let God
do a new thing in our midst, in us? If you and I let the flame
of the Spirit burn in our hearts and the wind of the Spirit blow
us into the world, I really believe God will do here what God
did on that first Pentecost!
In God’s Gracious Grip,
Pastor Sandy

From Hope’s Council
Dear Friends in Christ,
I often find it interesting how God communicates with
us and we do not realize it until days later. During our
last Council meeting Renate Jefferson, our VicePresident, reminded us through one of her favorite
authors, that we need to remember to thank God for
listening to us and answering our prayers. When I
arose the next morning I kept hearing that message
in my head…be sure to thank God and Jesus today
for all the gifts he has provided you and your family. I
know throughout my life I have asked God for help
ten times more often than I have thanked him.
Lord Jesus, thank you for all of the gifts, miracles
and people you have provided Hope to grow in
faith in 2015.
This month the Council had a full agenda to discuss
and vote on. We approved Hope Children Center
2015/16 budget and entered into a contract with
Lutheran Retreats Conferences and Camps (LRCC),
with Temecula United Methodist Church to host Day
Camp for our community July 13-17. In addition, we
had several recommendations from the Business
Team to discuss and decide on. For instance, the
Business Team helped us reduce our cost for property
insurance coverage…thank you God!
Other hot topics that the Council is still working
through is developing Hope’s capital campaign
associated with “Building Hope for the Future.”
Renate Jefferson and Chuck Coe are leading this
very important effort for our congregation. If anyone
is interested in participating on this Capital
Campaign team please reach out to Renate and
Chuck. We are also creating a Human Resource
team that will help us keep up with ever-changing
CA employment laws.
Finally, we met with members of the Steering
Committee to discuss the status of our future new
campus at Vallejo and next steps. For the Council,
the most important steps we are working on are
sending out informational letters to the HOA
residents regarding our proposed new campus,
meeting with some of the closest residents to listen
to the feedback they may have regarding the
proposed new campus and schedule several town
hall meetings with our HOA residents. For additional
information please read the Steering Committee
update in this newsletter. In addition, the Council will
be scheduling a congregational update meeting in
the near future.
As summer begins there are lots of new ways for us
to connect with God, each other and our
community. Look for more details in this newsletter
and join us for:

are attending this year’s ELCA Synod Assembly
Conference in Riverside at the Riverside Convention

announcements and a monthly report here in the
Hope Happenings. Feel free to contact us any time
with comments or questions.
We have created a rough timeline, based on our
best “guesstimates” to keep the project on
track. Rough means it will be fluid – some
phases will be completed early and some will
be extended. Above all, we trust God is in
charge!
There are many, many aspects to our new
campus project. In order for us to “keep all the
balls in the air”, we have divided our committee
into sub-groups to tackle specific jobs that match
the talents of our members (City Coordination,
Contracts & Contractor Coordination,
Construction, Home Owners Association, Budget,
and Communication). So, you will be hearing
from Renate and me on a regular basis as the
communication arm of the Steering Committee.
We will provide periodic updates during Sunday
On Thursday, May 7, a project report was
presented to the Los Ranchitos Home Owners
Association Board of Directors. And on
Monday, May 11, our Conditional Use Permit
(CUP) package was submitted to the City of
Temecula -- we anticipate the final approval
will come sometime in September.
$49,930 as of May 21
As plans for our new campus move forward,
we ask that your prayers include continued
divine guidance, open doors and the right
people to join our project to complete God’s
vision for His new church.

Hunger Ministry
Hope's Offering of Letters Campaign 2015 "Feed
Our Children" was very successful! Almost 50 letters
were mailed to respective Senators and
Representatives. The Hunger Ministry Team thanks
the congregation for its continuous support with this
service activity. We ask that you continue to pray
for our national leaders as they vote on important
food programs that help support those in need.
Hunger does not go away during the summer! With
school in recess for the summer many families who
may have had students receiving free or low-cost
lunches will no long have access to these
programs. In support of local food programs and
assisting in filling this void, Hopes’ Hunger Ministry will
be holding a “food focused” food drive.

Many Hope small groups are studying the Bible together using A.D. study resources. The A.D. studies
coordinate with the NBC TV series which runs through June 21. Each week participants watch the series on
Sunday evening OR record it to watch at their convenience. There is even a website where the A.D. series is
available following each Sunday presentation on NBC. The Bible study follows the TV
show and focuses on what happened after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Prime Timers
June Luncheon and Program
Guest: Hal Garner
Speaking on “Celebrating the Gift of Years”
Thursday June 11 11:30 am – l pm
** NEW LOCATION**
Assistance League Meeting Room
28720 Via Montezuma
(West of Jefferson just south of Overland)
Prime Timer luncheons are held at the Assistance
League Temecula Valley Meeting Room, 28720 Via
Montezuma, Temecula. Going north on Jefferson
turn left on Montezuma, first driveway to the right.
Our June program will be presented by Hal Garner,
who will speak on “Celebrating the Gift of
Years.” Mr. Garner grew up on a farm in Maryland.
He attended Bridgewater College in Virginia and
then Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago
(both Church of the Brethren schools) where he
obtained a Master’s degree in theology; he then
went to Northwestern University and obtained
another Master’s degree in pastoral counseling. He
served 12 years as Minister of Education and
pastoral minister. Then a Ph.D. from
Michigan State University, followed by
22 years as vice president and
president in 3 Illinois Community
Colleges. He retired to Irvine for 17
years and then to Four Seasons in
Murrieta. In January he initiated a Prime Time Club
for the seniors in his HOA association. This makes him
a very fitting speaker for our group.
Please sign up in the back of the worship space on
either of the two Sundays prior to this event so we
know how many are coming. Please don’t forget to
sign up, and please remember we must pay the
caterer for every name on the list - $9.
We urge all 50+ people to attend. The program, the
food and the fellowship will make for a most
enjoyable outing. Friends are especially welcome.
At this time I don’t have menu but I promise a
delicious lunch. Hope to see you there.
