Introducing the Hororata
Community Trust
The Hororata Community Trust (HCT) was registered
as a charitable trust in August 2011 with the purpose to
help rebuild and promote the community following the
September 2010 earthquakes. The HCT’s role is one
of bringing the community together to help it recover,
emotionally and physically, from the earthquakes. The HCT
recognised the need to help the community find direction
for its future.
The Hororata Highland Games was established as the
main fundraising focus for the Hororata Community Trust
but also to give the community a positive focus. The brief
for the Games was to establish a quality event, which
offered all the traditional elements of Scottish Highland
Games surrounded by a fun filled festival that engaged the
community. The Hororata Highland Games has been held
successfully for the past four years.
The motivation behind the Hororata Highland Games is
not only to raise money; it is also to raise the profile of the
area and its local businesses so the benefits are felt by the
community throughout the year.
Through the establishment of the Games the Hororata
Community Trust was able to develop other revenue
streams including the Hororata Whisky, Tartan Club and
Hororata Tartan. The Whisky and Tartan were developed
with support from international companies who wanted to
assist the community.
Hororata Community Trust
has achieved up to 2015:
•Invested over $20,000 into the Hororata Domain over
the past four years making it more desirable for many
different events
•Awarded $12,000 in grants to the three local primary

for the community and local businesses
•Installed area welcome signs
•In 2014 a $5000.00 fund was distributed to four community
groups as acknowledgement of the communities volunteer
investment in the Hororata Highland Games
“Stemming from the desire of the local community to
take charge of its future following the devastation in
the region caused by the Canterbury earthquakes, the
Hororata Highland Games is truly a community success
story.”
Hon Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn.

“The games at Hororata have held true to the traditional
spirit of Highland Games as a true gathering of the
clans. People from all walks of life come to experience
the Scottish culture of dancing, listening to the
bagpipes, athletics, eating traditional foods and of
course the water of life whisky. Even though the
Hororata Games are still in their infancy, this event is
one that I would recommend to friends and family.”
Pat Hallier, Former World Champion Heavy Athlete .
“ My wee girl loved seeing the dancers and my boy
enjoyed watching the tug-o-war plus riding on all the
