S AT U R D AY 7 T H N O V E M B E R www.hororatahighlandgames.org.nz Introducing the Hororata Community Trust The Hororata Community Trust (HCT) was registered as a charitable trust in August 2011 with the purpose to help rebuild and promote the community following the September 2010 earthquakes. The HCT’s role is one of bringing the community together to help it recover, emotionally and physically, from the earthquakes. The HCT recognised the need to help the community find direction for its future. The Hororata Highland Games was established as the main fundraising focus for the Hororata Community Trust but also to give the community a positive focus. The brief for the Games was to establish a quality event, which offered all the traditional elements of Scottish Highland Games surrounded by a fun filled festival that engaged the community. The Hororata Highland Games has been held successfully for the past four years. The motivation behind the Hororata Highland Games is not only to raise money; it is also to raise the profile of the area and its local businesses so the benefits are felt by the community throughout the year. Through the establishment of the Games the Hororata Community Trust was able to develop other revenue streams including the Hororata Whisky, Tartan Club and Hororata Tartan. The Whisky and Tartan were developed with support from international companies who wanted to assist the community. Hororata Community Trust has achieved up to 2015: •Invested over $20,000 into the Hororata Domain over the past four years making it more desirable for many different events •Awarded $12,000 in grants to the three local primary schools •The Hororata Highland Games was a finalists in the 2014 New Zealand Association of Event Professional awards for Best Established Community Event •Led multiple community meetings to gain strategic direction for the district and the Trust’s own projects •Launched the Hororata website offering an online hub for the community and local businesses •Installed area welcome signs •In 2014 a $5000.00 fund was distributed to four community groups as acknowledgement of the communities volunteer investment in the Hororata Highland Games “Stemming from the desire of the local community to take charge of its future following the devastation in the region caused by the Canterbury earthquakes, the Hororata Highland Games is truly a community success story.” Hon Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn. Objectives in 2015 • To enhance the Hororata Brand by recognising the historic elements of the region while also creating a beautiful area for the future community • Further develop the Hororata Whisky and Tartan projects creating new opportunities • To ensure that the Hororata Highland Games continue to evolve and has financial security by; • Delivering a high quality Scottish event through good event management processes and keeping pure to the brand • Sign up a core group of corporate partners to drive goals in longer term • To grow the core event components and introduce at least one new activity and participation event each year • Continue to recognise and engage the volunteers who are essential to the success of the event Hororata Highland Games 2014 At the 2014 Hororata Highland Games a huge crowd of 8000 people was entertained with 300 competitors taking part in the event; 50 Solo Pipers and Drummers, 89 Highland Dancers, 11 Pipe Bands, 15 runners ran the Kilted Mile, 8 Tug O’ War teams tugged off and 9 athletes competed in the inaugural Oceania Heavyweight Championship. Records were broken with 200 primary school aged children competing in the Junior Warriors heavy events. The Games also hosted 15 Scottish Clans, 70 stall holders, 600 corporate and VIP guests including Chieftain Sir Bob Parker and Joanna, Lady Parker. Highlights of 2014 • Introduction of the Oceania Heavyweight Championship with an international field of top athletes • Hosting of 600 corporates alongside the competition arenas • New Hororata Highland Games website • Introduction of new waste management system at the event which included recycling • Comprehensive media coverage pre and post event, which included the front page of The Press • Outstanding feedback following the event from competitors, corporates, visitors and volunteers What’s planned for 2015? • • • • • • Introduction of a team Woolcraft Challenge New look Highland Challenge for teams More Have a Go events New format for the Welcome Ceremony International Chieftain Investment in new dance boards for Highland Dancing Competition • Investment in building our own grandstand seating rather than hiring “The games at Hororata have held true to the traditional spirit of Highland Games as a true gathering of the clans.
