AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE CADETS 3 WING HEADQUARTERS Precision Drill Competition Rules 2015 Team Composition: 1. To be eligible to participate, a Squadron’s Drill Team must consist of a minimum of ten (10) and a maximum of twenty five (25) cadets including the flight sergeant. 2. The flight can be made up of the following cadet ranks: a. No more than one third of the total number of the flight being Cadet Non Commissioned Officers b. Leading Cadet and Cadet ranks shall make up the remainder of the flight 3. The flight sergeant for the team can be the following ranks: a. b. c. d. e. Cadet Corporal Cadet Sergeant Cadet Flight Sergeant Cadet Warrant Officer Cadet Under Officer 4. Three example team compositions: a. Flight sergeant – One x Cadet Under Officer. Team – One x Cadet Sergeant, Two x Cadet Corporals, Three x Leading Cadets and Three x Cadets (total team – ten cadets) b. Flight sergeant – One x Cadet Warrant Officer. Team – One x Cadet Sergeant, Four x Cadet Corporals, Three x Leading Cadets and Eight x Cadets (total team – seventeen cadets) c. Flight sergeant – One x Cadet Sergeant. Team – Five x Cadet Corporals, Seven x Leading Cadets and Nine x Cadets (total team – twenty cadets) 5. A complete team list is to be provided to the Head Judge on the competition day prior to the team participating in the event. Drill Patter: 6. The sequence is up to the Squadron to prepare. The following movements must be included: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. Left (or right) turn at the halt; Marching in quick time; Diagonal marching; To the left (or right) salute on the march; Left (or right) turn on the march in quick time; Closing to the left (or right); Marching in slow time; About turn on the march in slow time; i. j. k. l. m. Change step in quick time; Left (or right) form on the move in slow time; On the left (or right) form flight at the halt in quick time; Wheeling in quick time; and Marking time in slow time. Of the following movements, ten must be selected and performed by the team during their sequence. The team’s choice of optional movements is to be provided to the Head Judge on the competition day prior to the team participating in the event. a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. l. m. n. o. p. q. r. s. About turn at the halt; Marking time in quick time; Mark time from marching in quick time; Forward in quick time; Change step whilst marking time in quick time; To the front salute on the march; About turn on the march in quick time; Left dress; Forming flight on the move in quick time; Forming flight on the move in slow time; Forming flight at the halt in slow time; Left (or right) form from the halt in quick time; Left (or right) form from the halt in slow time; Left (or right) form on the move in quick time; Change step in slow time; Change step whilst marking time in slow time; Left (or right) turn on march in slow time; Mark time from marching in slow time; and Forward in slow time. 7. With the above rules in mind, extra movements from the DCB, DCP or DCA syllabi may be used to allow the sequence to flow together however routines should not go above 30 movements. Dress Requirements: 8. All cadets must be dressed and groomed strictly in accordance with the AAFC Manual of Dress. a. Males- Long Sleeve Service Dress, Tie, SD Shoes/GP boots, Hat Fur Felt (SD Cap Warrant Officers & Cadet Under Officers). b. Females- Long Sleeve Service Dress, Tie, SD Shoes/GP boots, Hat Fur Felt (SD Cap Warrant Officers & Cadet Under Officers) Points: 9. Points will be awarded to the team as follows: a. b. c. d. One hundred points for dress / uniform Two hundred and fifty points for drill Movements Fifty points for the flight sergeant Fifty points for the dressing of the flight 10. Total points available - four hundred and fifty. 11. Dress / uniform: Each team member will start with ten points. Each item listed below will attract a point’s deduction if it is contrary to the AAFC Manual of Dress: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. This score will be averaged by individuals to accommodate different sized flights, multiplied by ten. 13. For each movement, the flight will be awarded ten points to start with. Each mistake listed below will attract a points deduction: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. k. Partial incorrect words of command – One Point Incorrect words of command – Two Points Order called on the incorrect foot – One Point One cadet incorrectly executing the movement – One Point Two or more cadets incorrectly executing the movement – Two Points Entire Flight incorrectly executing the movement – Five Points One cadet executing movement correctly to incorrect timing – One Point Two or more cadets executing movement correctly to incorrect timing – Two Points Entire Flight executing movement correctly to incorrect timing – Five Points Drill movement omitted from compulsory moves – Ten Points Drill movement omitted from selected optional 10 moves – Ten Points 14. The flight sergeant will be scored on four categories as follows for a total of fifty points; a. Voice Projection i. Excellent voice projection for the duration of the sequence – Twenty Points ii. Very good voice projection for most of the sequence – Fifteen Points iii. Adequate voice projection for most of the sequence – Ten Points iv. Poor voice projection for more than half of the sequence – Five Points v. Barely Audible or nil voice projection – Zero Points b. Order Clarity i. Always clear and concise – Ten Points ii. Sometimes unclear – Five Points iii. Often unclear – Zero Points c. Personal Drill i. Excellent for the duration of the sequence – Ten Points ii. Very good for most of the sequence – Seven Points iii. Adequate for most of the sequence – Five Points iv. Poor for more than half of the sequence – Two Points v. Unacceptable for the duration of the sequence – Zero Points d. Adherence to Procedures i. Completed all instructions for drill sequence – Ten Points ii. Completed half instructions for drill sequence – Five Points iii. Procedures not followed correctly – Zero Points 15. The dressing of the flight will be scored as follows; a. b. c. d. e. Excellent dressing for the duration of the sequence – Fifty Points Very good dressing for most of the sequence – Forty Points Adequate dressing for most of the sequence – Thirty Points Poor dressing for more than half of the sequence – Twenty Points Poor dressing for the entire sequence – Zero Points Procedures: 16. Flights are to be correctly sized and take up their position at the nominated inspection zone as the group before them is competing. 17. Once inspected, the uniform judge will direct the flight sergeant to march the flight onto the parade ground, halting twenty paces in front of the judges’ table, right dress, number the flight and stand the flight at ease. 18. On completion of this, the flight sergeant is to report to the head judges, halting five paces from the judges’ table. The flight sergeant is to pay the appropriate compliments to the ranking judge and is to inform the judging table of the number of cadets in the flight, quote their Squadron number then ask for permission to begin with their display. 19. The flight sergeant must remain at five paces from the judges table, in the correct position of attention during the sequence; however the execution of correct static drill movements is permitted to maintain accurate control over the flight. 20. The flight sergeant will not be allowed to refer to notes during the sequence. 21. The flight sergeant will have ten minutes to complete the sequence starting from when the judges grant permission to begin. 22. At the conclusion of the sequence, the flight sergeant is to face the judges table to seek permission to leave the parade ground. Judging: 23. There will be seven judges assessing various aspects of the competition to ensure fairness and accuracy of the competition. 24. Each judge will be responsible for judging the same item throughout the competition day. The seven judges will assess the following areas; a. Uniform Judge – Assessment of uniforms b. Drill Patter Judge One – Mandatory and elected drill movements performed, drill movements execution, drill movements called on correct foot c. Drill Patter Judge Two – Drill movements execution, dressing of the flight, drill movement given using correct words of command d. Flight Sergeant Judge – All aspects of the flight sergeant e. Sequence Judge One – Flight sergeant adherence to procedures, drill movements in correct order f. Sequence Judge Two – Drill movements called on correct foot, drill movements given using correct words of command g. Head Judge – Flight Sergeant voice, commands and personal drill, dressing of the flight 25. Scores for each item will be compiled on the competition day with the following awards being presented at the conclusion for the competition day; a. 3rd Place - Overall b. 2nd Place - Overall c. Ernie Taylor Shield for 1st Place Overall 26. Final scores will be distributed to all Squadrons who participate after the competition via email. 27. The judges’ decision on the day will be final.
