SUMMER IN THE RANCH - Highlands Ranch Community Association

News
May 2015
Summer in the Ranch
One of the best features of living in Highlands Ranch is the variety
of HRCA activities available for everyone, and in the summer we
boost the number and variety.
The Backcountry Wilderness Area Outdoor Adventure Camps are full and half-day
in the great outdoors. Kids love horseback riding, animal tracking, survival skills,
conservation, ecology, paddle boarding, and wildlife identification. We teach the
kids to appreciate nature and prepare them for a lifetime of outdoor fun!
HRCA’s full-time Day Camp and full-time Enrichment are theme-based and age
appropriate with fun activities like swimming or trips to places like Pirates Cove
and Indoor Skydiving. Keep them busy with a half-day camp in art, pottery, drama,
cooking, technology, and science.
HRCA has been the leader in Highlands Ranch for 30 years offering indoor and
outdoor pool programs. Summer classes fill quickly for Learn-to-Swim and Coached
& Competitive programs. Try scuba, snorkeling, or springboard diving! Cool off in
the hot summer months.
The HRCA has sports and fitness opportunities to keep your entire family active.
Join an organized league, camp, clinic, or participate in one of the largest tennis
programs in Colorado. Get in shape with a drop-in group exercise, try a personal
trainer, or race in our family-friendly Race Series. The HRCA Therapeutic Recreation
Department offers numerous programs and activities for people with special needs.
Enjoy the warm summer evenings at one or all of the free outdoor concerts. Bring
a picnic dinner and a blanket and enjoy the Summer Concert Series at Highlands
Heritage Regional Park. The first band in the line up on June 4 is the Tripping
Griswalds (Rock). Watch for your Summer Concert Series cling featuring the entire
list in the June newsletter.

The Taste of
highlands Ranch
Don’t miss the most delicious
event of the year! The Taste of
Highlands Ranch is celebrating
its 20th year of excellence in
food, wine, beer, and spirits. This
annual event showcases the best
of what Highlands Ranch has to
offer. Davidsons Liquor will provide
samples of alcoholic beverages
and over 30 area restaurants will
show off their best cuisine.
New for 2015 is an outdoor beer
garden with food from local
restaurants and beers from local
breweries. Michael Friedman
Quartet will provide live music
throughout the evening.
Each year a silent auction
benefiting a nonprofit organization
rounds out “The Taste.” This year
the American Diabetes Association
will receive the entire proceeds of
the auction. Approximately 410,312
people in Colorado have diabetes
which is 10.1% of the population.
It is estimated another 1,342,000
people 34.8% of the population
have pre-diabetes. This disease

The Highlands Ranch Community Association is in full swing with our programs and
activities! The temperatures have warmed up and we are finally seeing more of our
neighbors after a winter hibernation! The trees and other vegetation are now blooming
and summer is in the air. We have plenty to get you out and about this month.
Events:
May starts off with a signature event for HRCA. The Taste of Highlands Ranch is one
of my personal favorite events of the year! It is being held at the Recreation Center at
Eastridge the evening of Friday, May 1. That same weekend, on May 3, we are starting
our weekly Farmers’ & Street Markets and hosting our Computer/Electronics Recycling
& Paper Shredding event. After you run in the Mother’s Day 5K bring the kids to our
Hooked on Fishing series on May 9. Please check out our web site for other great
events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.
Springtime in The Ranch:
Now that warmer temperatures are upon us, more homeowners are in our Backcountry
Wilderness Area using the trails. There are 8,200 acres of conservation space to
explore. HRCA members are invited to enjoy the 26 miles of trails and we have a variety
of Backcountry activities. Please help us preserve our trails by limiting bike riding when
conditions are muddy and leave nature as you found it by cleaning up any trash or
debris brought with you.
What’s New:
Some new and exciting changes you may have noticed here at HRCA are a refreshed
logo and web site. Updating the logo and web site has helped improve marketing and
given the HRCA a new modern look. The print vendor that generates the assessment
statements has also changed. You may have noticed a new appearance in the second
quarter invoices. This in no way has changed your direct debit enrollment.
Garden in a Box:
Centennial Water has a great solution to learn about and plant a water-wise garden.
You can save water and beautify your landscape by purchasing a professionally
designed, perennial garden that uses Xeric (low water) plants and includes a
comprehensive plant and care guide. A limited number of $25 rebates are available for
Centennial Water customers. For more information, or to order a Garden in a Box, visit
www.ConservationCenter.org/Gardens.

Community News
Community Improvement Services
Have you ever wondered what the benefits of living in a covenant
controlled community are? How does my property value compare
to adjacent communities?
Sometimes HOA’s get a bad rap for simply following and enforcing the rules set forth in
their respective community declarations; however, the mainstay of any HOA should be
to maintain and enhance the property values of a community. The rules and covenants
of your HRCA are an asset to everyone involved and are overseen by a Board of
Directors, elected by community delegates that have residents’ best interest in mind. Both commercial and residential property owners are subject to the covenants outlined
in our community declaration. Citizen advisory committees are appointed annually by
the Board of Directors to be actively involved in the HRCA’s Architectural Review and
Compliance process. The Architectural Residential Committee (ARC) meets bi-monthly
to review applications for residential home improvements and exterior modifications.
The Development Review Committee (DRC) meets monthly to review commercial new
builds and renovations. The Commercial Review Committee (CRC), meets weekly and
reviews signage and Site Improvement Plans. Additionally, each committee perpetually
reviews their respective guidelines and updates and revises annually if warranted.
Prior to adoption of any rule or guideline, the Board of Directors vet the proposal to the
community at large for comment. By and large, our community takes great interest and
pride in the establishment of our covenants.
As a property owner, you can always find a current copy of the Residential
Improvement Guidelines (RIGs) or the Commercial Improvement Guidelines on our web
site at www.HRCAonline.org/Covenants. It is always a good idea to scour the rules and
covenants if you’re planning an exterior project.

Farmers’ & Street Markets
Do you know where your food is farmed or how far it travels before it reaches your
plate? Many Highlands Ranchers do and this explains the popularity of the HRCA
Farmers’ Market. Partnering with the Metro Denver Farmers’ Market, the HRCA
Farmers’ and Street Markets have become the area’s finest.
The Farmers’ Market offers the freshest, locally grown and produced foods. Early
in the season before produce has begun to ripen, the market offers freshly baked
breads, pastas, sauces, flowers, and more. As summer progresses, the market
explodes with all the colors, smells, and varieties of Colorado’s bounty. You may
pick up a Colorado Farm Fresh Directory at any recreational facility to learn what
vegetables are offered each month.
The HRCA Street Market has numerous vendors and offers treasures galore! The
markets are adjacent to each other, so it will be truly a one-stop shop! Visit www.
HRCAonline.org/Events for a list of farmers and vendors.

Trail Etiquette in the Backcountry Wilderness Area
With the addition of 3 miles of new trails last fall, the Backcountry now has over 26
miles of natural surface trails open to hikers, runners, bikers, and horses. Multi-use
trails like ours are more enjoyable for everyone if users obey certain rules and use
proper trail etiquette.
Here are a few suggestions for everyone to follow to maximize enjoyment:
• Do not use the trails when they are muddy. This causes damage to the trails, inhibits
water drainage, causing further damage, and ultimately wrecks the trails.
• Do not wear ear buds. Most accidents and collisions occur when one or both parties
are wearing ear buds. You only have two senses to warn you of oncoming traffic, sight
and sound; take away sound and you increase your odds of a wreck.
• Where dogs are allowed, keep them on a leash. It is a safety and resource protection
issue, but rattle snakes are common and if your dog wanders off trail it is likely to get
bit. The same should be considered for children, keep them close and on the trail to
prevent encounters with rattlesnakes.
• Last, when using the HRCA trails you should carry your recreation center card. We do
check. Copies of your card or a picture on your phone are also acceptable. Enjoy the
trails, always expect others and respect others.
This summer is a great time for your
little one to meet new friends, spend
a little time away from mom and dad
and to build some independence
while enjoying the summer sun!
