Beginning in 1928, each May 1st is celebrated as “Lei Day” in Hawaii. This is a proud tradition for celebrating Hawaii’s host culture through dance (hula), music, the art of flower garland (lei) making, food, and honoring Hawaiian Royalty in the form of a Royal Court. WHY HOLD A MAY D AY ALOHA FESTIVAL? • • • • • To provide an opportunity for SRJC students and surrounding communities to experience one of the most important cultural celebrations of Hawaii on our campuses. Strengthen community by creating a venue for Pacific Islander SRJC students to thrive and be recognized. Cultivate the philosophy of “Live Aloha.” Raise awareness of Hawaiian/Hawaii cultural traditions. Dispel myths and misinformation regarding Hawaii and Hawaii’s host culture through cultural presentations and workshops. WHO IS HUI PŪLAMA MAU? Hui Pūlama Mau is Santa Rosa Junior College's Hawai’i Community Organization. We are a small dedicated group comprised of Santa Rosa Junior College staff, faculty, and students, including local community members. WHAT IS THE MISSION STATEMENT OF HUI PŪLAMA MAU?
