Technical Data Sheet on Phenyltrimethicone
Appearance of Phenyl Trimethicone
Structural formula of Phenyl Trimethicone
Phenyl trimethicone is a polymer substance, liquid silicone widely used in cosmetic industry. In
different formulations (not only cosmetic) this silicone serves as an antifoaming agent which inhibits the
formation of foam even if shaking.
On their optical properties (refractive index) is a substance similar to hair. Thanks to this phenyl
trimethicone when applied to the hair instantly increases their brilliance, gives a glossy and well-groomed
appearance. This property is widely applicable in sprays for shine. Besides phenyl trimethicone improves
the hair texture and makes it silky by touch (this effect is particularly noticeable on chemically damaged
hair).
This component additionally provides heat protection properties to cosmetic products for hair.
Phenyl trimethicone is an excellent conditioning component not only for hair, but also for skin. As
the component in cosmetic products it spreads easily over the skin and hair and forms non-greasy and nonsticky film that prevents the loss of moisture from the surface. Therefore, it is used in creams and lotions
for skin, shampoos and hair conditioners (including non-washable conditioners and thermal protection
products for hair.
We should also note that the film of phenyl trimethicone protects the hair and skin from moisture
loss the same as from moisture penetration. This ensures a waterproof effect of some products, such as
sun protection products for hair and skin. It is combined with UV-filters (even dissolves them) and increase
sun protection properties of products (SPF).
The film of phenyl trimethicone, as already mentioned, is impermeable to water, but permeable to gases, so
the skin under such film breathes.
Phenyl trimethicone is included often in composition of antiperspirants wax-, oil- and alcohol based,
where it is used to prevent the formation of white spots.
Phenyl trimethicone in local application is considered to be the safe ingredient and approved for use in
cosmetic industry. Only in very rare cases, this component can cause the allergy.
Phenyl trimethicone is water insoluble, but washed out completely with shampoos containing Lauryl
Sulfate, Laureth Sulfate or Cocamidopropil Betaine.
