Huntington’s Heritage Days schedule of events, 2015
The Huntington County Chamber of
Commerce along with area organizations
and businesses will celebrate Huntington
Heritage Days Wednesday, June 17 through
Sunday, June 21. The corporate sponsor of
this year’s event is Parkview Huntington
Hospital, 2001 Stults Road, www.parkview.com.
The theme for the 2015 Heritage Days is
“Broadcasting the 1930s,” part of the ongoing theme of “Exploring Our Heritage.”
Buttons depicting the theme logo are available for $2 at the Chamber office, 305 Warren Street, or the Huntington County Visitor
and Convention Bureau, 407 N. Jefferson
Street.
With the purchase of a button, a 7 day
pass is included at Anytime Fitness; a free
upgrade is available from Caribbean Corner; Create A Cut will discount any hair cut
$2; The Berg Ale Haus is offering a free soft
drink with a meal purchase; KFC will discount a Popcorn Nugget Combo, $1 and
The Rusty Dog will offer a free soft drink
with the purchase of any lunch or dinner.
The discounts are valid from June 14
through June 21, 2015.
The Chamber is pleased to announce that
Poor Jack Amusements Company is once
again the midway provider for Heritage
Days. It is a clean, spectacular and family
owned attraction that will be located on
Warren Street from June 17 through June
21. Those purchasing a wristband for Sunday, June 21, from 12 Noon to 5 p.m., for
$18, will receive one free with a coupon.
Coupons are available at the Chamber, the
Visitor and Convention Bureau, local convenience stores or the coupon is on the Heritage Days brochure.
Poor Jack Amusements rides and games
will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on
Wednesday, June 17; Thursday, June 18, 5
to 10 p.m.; Friday, June 19, 4 to 11 p.m.;
Saturday, June 20, Noon to 11 p.m. with the
final day being Sunday, June 21 from Noon
to 5 p.m.
The Little Miss Heritage Days and Junior
Miss Heritage Days Pageant will take place

on the evening of Wednesday, June 17 at the
Huntington University Merillat Centre for
the Arts. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets are available from contestants or at
the door for $4.
Thursday, June 18 brings the 47th Annual
Chief of the Flint Springs Tribe Breakfast
at 8 a.m. It is located at the LaFontaine Golf
Club and is sponsored by the Chamber. This
yearly activity names the new Chief of the
Flint Springs Tribe. Reservations for the
$18 per person event are required by June
11 with the Chamber of Commerce.
The Huntington Rotary Club Strawberry
Feed will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Heritage Hall at Hier’s Park also on Thursday.
Strawberries and ice cream will be served
and tickets are available at local banks, from
Rotary members or at the door. The “all you
can eat” price is $5, with kids five and under
eating for free.
The ABWA Forks of the Wabash Chapter
Brat Tent will open at 11 a.m. Friday and
continue to 1 a.m. at Hier’s Park. The Brat
Tent continues on Saturday from 5 p.m. to
1 a.m. Live music will be featured each
evening. There is a charge for food and entertainment and a $2 cover charge for ages
10 and over after 7 p.m.
Youth for Christ will sponsor a Golf
Challenge at the Norwood Golf Club at
Noon on Friday. Registration is $75 per
player. Business Hole Sponsor is $100.

The Heritage Days Car, Truck, Tractor
and Motorcycle Show in downtown Huntington will begin at 5 p.m. and continue
until 9 p.m. on Friday. The hosts are Team
Thunder and Lightning and Showtime Motorworks. Fun activities, food vendors in
every block and DJ Fast Eddie will spin
tunes during the evening. Food will be
available downtown and local restaurants
will be open. The event is a fundraiser for
the Downtown Business Association. The
vehicle entry fee is $10 and awards will take
place at 8:30 p.m. to the top 25; best of
show; best car, truck, motorcycle; best
1930s vehicle; best engine, best interior.
A Hot Air Balloon Festival will once
again be part of Heritage Days with
launches at various times (weather permitting) from Friday evening, June 19 through
Sunday, June 21. Launches will begin at
7:30 p.m. on Friday at Huntington North
High School and continue through the
weekend.
Saturday brings an early breakfast opportunity with the Women of the Moose Lodge
serving up biscuits, sausage gravy and potatoes at 390 Frontage Road, 7 to 10 a.m.
Coffee is included in the breakfast price,
milk and juice are extra.

and is followed by the 52nd Annual Heritage Days Parade sponsored by the Chamber. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the
corner of North Jefferson and MacGahan
Streets and its completion is at the corner of
South Jefferson and Etna Avenue.
Downtown will be the place for the Fun
Zone for children’s activities on Saturday
from Noon to 4 p.m. Pony rides and a petting zoo will be a part of the afternoon sponsored by McDonald’s of Huntington.
Bounce houses sponsored by The Parkview
Boys and Girls Club and Juergens Hardware will be available to entertain children.
The fun also includes the Beacon Credit
Union-sponsored Annual Kiddie Tractor
Pull for Riley at 1:30 p.m. Free hot dogs,
one per child with an adult purchase, courtesy of Lee’s KFC. Free Schwan’s Ice
Cream for children.
Station #3 Fire House will hold an open
house from 12 Noon to 3 p.m. It is located
on Etna Avenue and free hot dogs, chips and
beverages along with tours of the fire station, the fire house and Sparky the Fire Dog
will be a part of the afternoon.
The Heritage Days Strength Challenge V
will be held on Jefferson Street between
Court and Franklin Streets (in front of the
Courthouse) at 12 Noon. Various activities
will involve physical fitness. Registration is
the day of the event for $30. It is sponsored
by Champs Strength Athletics.
The Cornhole Challenge Tournament in
downtown Huntington begins at 1 p.m. on
Saturday. Sponsored by Trophy Center Plus
and Huntington County Habitat for Humanity, the event is limited to the first 40 teams
and there is a $20 entry fee per two person

The Sheets Wildlife Museum will be
open with free admission from 1 to 4 p.m.
The museum is located at 200 Safari Trail.
The Huntington County Disaster Team
Car and Truck Show will take place at
Huntington North High School from 1 to 8
p.m. (registration will be from 1 to 6 p.m.)
on Saturday and the Hot Air Balloon Festival continues from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. also

The Heritage Days Bed Race will begin
after the Hot Air Balloons lift off. The Balloon Glow will take place Saturday evening
at 9:30 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to
bring their children and cameras for a spectacular show of giant glowing aerostats.
The Parkview Huntington Hospital
Samaritan Helicopter will also be at the fest
and the YMCA Dancers will perform. Food
will be available for purchase from Boy
Scout Troup 135 selling hot dogs, St. Peters
First Community Church selling hamburgers and brats, Faith Lutheran Church selling
baked goods, St. Peter & Paul youth group
selling sno cones, Jr. Bowlers from Rainbow Lanes with popcorn and the Huntington Nitro Softball team with cookies. Joy
Pleaser Clowns will make balloon designs.
Vaudeville at the Forks will take place at
3 and 7 p.m. at the Historic Forks of the
Wabash Park, 3010 W. Park Drive. There
will be dramatic plays and a $5 fee to attend.
A Celebration of Life, Vietnam Veterans,
will take place at 3 p.m. at American Legion
Post 7, 1330 Etna Avenue. Two of the many
lives given selflessly for freedom and the
pursuit of happiness will be celebrated. Free
food, kids’ events, live music and laying of
memorial bricks will be a part of the event.
The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m.
Chief LaFontaine Saddle Club, 792
North 200 West, will be the place for the
Chief LaFontaine Horse Show on Sunday
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and
horses from the surrounding area will participate in the 18th annual show. It is an
open pleasure show, all breeds-classes.
The Historic Forks of the Wabash Park
will be hosting historians with expertise
about our community, and tours will take
place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Buildings
will be open to the public and the cost is $2.
A Taste of Two EE’s will begin at 1 p.m.
on Sunday and continue to 4 p.m. Wine tasting and entertainment by the Roanoke
Rounders will be a part of the afternoon at
the winery located along U.S. Hwy. 24. The
event is sponsored by Huntington Sheet
Metal and admission is free.
HARTA will hold a free bicycle Poker
Ride beginning at 2 p.m. at Schenkel Station. All riders will follow the marked route
with stops at all city parks to pick-up a card.
The ride also concludes at Schenkel Station
and the best poker hands will receive
awards. Children must be accompanied by
an adult and helmets are required.
JeFFFest completes Heritage Days from
6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Huntington. Music, food and fine art will be sponsored by the LaFontaine Arts Council. Eric
Clancy Jazz will entertain the crowd for two
hours. Tickets will be sold that evening in
$1 increments and be used to purchase the
food items. A silent auction of fine art begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. Canvases are available at Four Corners Custom
Framing for $5, and finished artwork must
be returned by June 15.
The Indiana Dream Center will assist
with keeping Huntington clean during the
festival. The Chamber appreciates their
service to our community.

Farmers’ Market to open in
Huntington Wednesday, June 3
The Downtown Farmer’s Market will open for
its third year on Wednesday, June 3. The Downtown Farmer’s Market is held in the city parking
lot on the corner of Warren and Market Streets.
The market will continue in this location and will
be open on Wednesdays, from 4 to 7 p.m., from
June 3 through October 14.
The market promises to have plenty of produce,
baked goods, salsa, cupcakes, cookies, jewelry,
honey, maple syrup, plants and much more. Also
planned for the 2015 season will be demonstrations
and entertainment.
Be sure to look for the yard signs, banners and
more to help remind you of the Farmers’ Market. Be sure to mark your calendars each
Wednesday throughout the summer. Come and see what our local farmers and hobbyists are producing.

Funds being raised for Purple Heart Monument
Gloria Holzinger of Huntington would
like to see a Purple Heart Monument located at Memorial Park’s new veterans’ memorial. The monument would honor the
county’s natives who were wounded in the
course of combat.
Fundraising for the monument by
Holzinger and a monument committee comprised of Holzinger, Brian Love, Bruce
Stanton, Chris Newton, Danielle Clements,
Juanita Hedrick, Larry Jenks, Leslie Ackermann, Michael Howell, Perry Collins, Pete
Eshelman, Steve Kimmel and Terry Stoffel
has already begun. The group is spearheading fundraising efforts to get the monument
ordered and installed in time for Veterans
Day.
The newly-formed committee met Monday, April 20, to look at plans for the monument and devise a way for the community
to make tax-deductible donations to pay for
the $32,439 project. The memorial would
be designed in red, white and blue stone and
will be one of the highlights of the park.
Holzinger says the monument is designed
to honor all Purple Heart recipients who
shed their blood - those who died as well as
those who were injured in combat. She had
initially proposed placing a memorial on the
Huntington County Courthouse lawn, then
learned that a new veterans’ park will be
constructed where the Memorial Park tennis
courts are now located.
“I had thought about this for some time,”
she says. “This is something that I really
think we need; it will be an asset to our vet-

VFW Post #2689 donates

VFW Post #2689 helped Gloria Holzinger’s plan for a Purple Heart Monument at

Purviance House B&B
The Purviance House Bed and Breakfast officially opened
for business on May 15. Wednesday evening, May 27, over 100
people attended a Chamber After Hours and ribbon cutting celebrating the new Huntington business.
Owned and operated by Mayor Brooks and Barb Fetters, the
Purviance House has been completely remodeled to accommodate overnight guests. Built in 1859 by Samuel Purviance, the
house is also home to the Fetters family.
The Fetters are welcoming guests for overnight stays. Breakfast will also be a part of the stay including coffee cake made
from a special recipe originally belonging to Barb Fetters’
mother. An open house welcoming the community is planned
for this weekend. Congratulations to the Fetters family on their
new venture in Huntington!
