This year's St. Joseph's Table was a
great success thanks to all the volunteers
who organized both the religious ceremony and the display table with great care
and a lot of attention to every detail from
beginning to end. The celebration began at
the St. Padre Pio Chapel with Holy Mass
celebrated by Father Scott Caton and the
Father Beatini Choir which sang selected
pieces both in Italian and in English.
In the church packed to capacity, the
Knights of Columbus from St. Jude the
Apostle Church, led the procession with
much dignity and décor.
After Mass everyone joined at the Italian American Community Center to view
an amazing St. Joseph's Table which had
been assembled by Ennio Santoleri, and
later blessed by Father Caton. The variety

Message from the President
Dear Members and Friends of the IACC,
I want to share with you the news that Villa Capri
will soon become a reality. We have closed the deal with
Mr. Spaziano, AKA Atlantic Funding & Real Estate,
LLC. on the sale of 4.7 acres east of the IACC building. As you will remember, we reached this agreement
to sell the parcel to Mr. Spaziano to satisfy and clear
a lawsuit which was commenced against the IACC by
Atlantic Funding. We believe that Villa Capri will be a
beautiful additional to the IACC campus and the Padre
Pio Chapel, and such an addition will be beneficial in
many different ways.

Soon all the snow will be a memory, spring will
warm our hearts and a new building will be built and
occupied. There are many events planned to be held during the year. I like to
remind you that our annual Festa Italiana will take place on July 16, 17 and
18 and per contractual obligations, we will partner with Festa Italia. Based on
last year’s experience, we pray that God will bless us with good weather for
the three days. Some changes are being made, as we want to offer our guests
the opportunity to savor good food, enjoy good music and be able to have a
good time the Italian way. More information will follow.
As you will notice, the IACC will hold different kinds of events. Well
known artists will provide the melodies of the past, romantic music, and the
opportunities to dance and have a good time.
We encourage you to patronize the cultural events that will be organized
by the Cultural Committee. For those of you who are interested in learning
the Italian language or want their children to learn it, we are offering different
classes at different levels to accommodate all age groups.
As always we appreciate your volunteerism and your patronage.

was proof of the old St. Joseph's Table
tradition. From minestre di lenticchie,
pasta con sarde, frittate of many different
vegetables, riso con ceci, verdure and an
abundant variety of desserts, everyone
had plenty to taste and savor. At the end of
the event, as the guests were leaving they
were also offered bread and an orange
as the tradition calls for. It was a truly
blessed day for everyone who attended
the event and for the many friends of
the IACC who worked countless hours
to make this event a great success. Our
appreciation goes to Amy Preziosi and
Amalia Plantone for coordinating the Religious Ceremony and to Rosa L'Abbate
and her crew of wonderful volunteers in
the kitchen for the preparation and the
supervision of the food.
For the first time this year the event initiated a Food Drive to help FOODLINK.
The food collection area will be displayed
in the Lobby of the IACC for one month,
from March 15th to April 15th. We invite
anyone who comes to the Center to bring
some non perishable items to donate to
FOODLINK.

For residents of Pozzallo, Sicily,
for the grace and humanity they show in
providing burials for growing numbers
of African citizens who have died trying
to emigrate to Europe. A skyrocketing
immigration crisis has seen tens of thousands rescued from the Mediterranean
Sea by Italian ships, but hundreds more
have died either in transit or shipwrecks.
Government and religious leaders see that
the victims are given proper burials.
Alessandro "Alex" Bertoni, MD
passed away on Feb. 20, 2015. Born in
Faenza, Italy, Dr. Bertoni opened a practice in the City of Rochester and another
in Gates. He had
a long standing
affiliation with
Park Ridge Hospital and Rochester
General Hospital
before retiring in
1994. Throughout
his professional
life Dr. Bertoni
was involved in many organizations including NASL
Rochester Lancers and the
Sports Car Club of America
Finger Lakes as their race
physician which included
Watkins Glen Gran Prix racing. He was also an active
member of the Casa Italiana
at Nazareth College and a
radio announcer in Italian
language and music programming. Dr.
Bertoni's involvement in The New York
State Academy of Family Physicians
substantially contributed toward the
development of the American Board of
Family Medicine, and after decades of
commitment to the advancement of family
medicine, in 1996 Dr. Bertoni was elected
to serve as President of the New York
State Academy of Family Physicians.

Caulonia: Tarantella Festival

il benvenuto nel paese di Caulonia: Benvenuto , Welcome.
Benvenù e Willkommen a Caulonia. In
Italiano, Inglese, Francese e Tedesco. E’
questo il primo assaggio dell’ospitalita’ e
amicizia offerti da questo paese calabrese
della provincia di Reggio Calabria. E’ un
paese di appena ottomila abitanti ma la cui
storia va indietro al settimo secolo avanti
Cristo. Qualche volta il nome e’ scritto
cosi’: Kaulonia che denota l’origine del
nome greco. Ogni anno e per il I4mo
anno consecutivo, questo paese, durante
l’estate attrae migliaia di persone grazie a
un festival: Tarantella Festival. E’ questo
un festival che unisce musica calabrese
, campana e . . .italiana. . E’ ormai un
festival musicale e culturale. E’ un altro
modo di attirare turisti mettendo in mostra
e servire specialita’ calabresi come forma-
ggi, salsiccia e vino della propria terra.
Questa celebrazione avviene ogni anno
nell’ultima settimana di agosto. A questa
festa partecipano non solo i cittadini di
Caulonia, ma anche gente del nord e
del sud e anche le nuove leve sbarcate
dall’Africa dal Medio Oriente. Per le
strade del paese, l’odore pungente delle
cipolle fritte, della salsiccia o dell’aglio
si unisce o si mischia con il ritmo dei
tamburi e il ballo sfrenato della tarantella.
La partecipazione e’ quella di massa.
Giovani, anziani con il sorriso sulle labbra
vi danno l’idea della gioia e della felicita’
dei partecipanti. L’anno scorso il festival
fu artisticamente diretto dal cantante rock
napoletano Edgenio Bennato. E’ la festa
del ballo, del ritmo, dei cenoni che per
quattro giorni allieta paesani e non paesani che si dimenticano dei problesmi del
paese e dell’Italia.
Storicamente il primo nome di questo
paese era Castelvetere, poi recuperato
il nome Kaulonia nel I863. Perche’ il
nome Kaulonia con la cappa? E’ perche’
Caulonia e’ uno dei tanti paesi della
Locride colonizzati dai Greci. La Locride
comprende 41 comuni e si estende da
nord—est della Calabria tra Punta Stilo e
Capo Spartibento.
I resti delle rovine rimaste da questa
colonizzazione lo si vede dai templi e
colonne doriche rimaste in stato di abbandono. A pensare che Caulonia aveva
anche le sue monete ispirate alla antica
Grecia.
Oggi, come tante altre citta’ calabresi,
ha i suoi problemi che almeno per pochi
giorni una volta l’anno vengono dimenticati. Ma, non e’ tutto perso perche’ i
problemi rimangoono a testimoniare la
validita’ storica e artistica qualche castello
diroccato, ma anche le belle chiese: quella
della Chiesa Matrice dell’Assunta e’ del
1513, la chiesa della Badia e la Chiesa del
Rosario Valore storico e culturale. Oltre a
questo ci sono le spiagge bellissime e un
mare limpido e azurro che fa invidia alle
tante spiaggie”privilegiate’.
Da non dimenticare che Caulonia ha
dato i natali a uno ‘star’ televisivo italiano:
Marcello Cirillo, nato proprio a san Nicola
di Caulonia.

Pass this on to a 20 or 30-yearold that you know (Part 1)
I have been
working on a series of personal
finance articles
directed at twenty
and thirty year
olds, who, in
many ways, are
living in a more
challenging ecoJohn Ninfo
nomic world than
any generation in the recent past.
For those of us who were brought up
in the Fifties, Sixties, and even the early
Seventies, the way we learned about personal finances was by watching the way
our parents and grandparents handled
and talked about money, and always
made money matter. There were very few
classes in the high schools or colleges
on personal finances, and there weren’t
books, websites and blogs that you could
learn from.
Fortunately, there was no easy credit,
so you lived on what you made or saved,
and you couldn’t really get yourself into
unaffordable debt, unless you went to a
“loan shark.” Today some people think
most lenders and financers are loan sharks.
The other big difference was that there
was not the hyper consumerism and
relentless advertising that there is today.
For most of us in the Italian American
Community, our parents and grandparents, many of whom lived through and
remembered the Depression, were great
role models for how to save and handle
money responsibly, so we were lucky.
In this and the next column, I will list
my favorite tips for this age group to think
about, and then learn more about. If you
know someone in this age group, please
think about passing this on.

ABOUT PERSONAL FINANCES.
There are so many books, websites,
calculators, and blogs available to you
these days, as well as courses offered by
colleges, religious organizations and community continuing education programs.
Take the time to take advantage of these
resources. You will never regret it.
GET INTO THE HABIT NOW
OF READING ALL OF YOUR FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS. As you
go through life, but especially in your
20’s and 30’s, thoroughly read each and
every one of your financial documents,
whether it is an auto loan, home mortgage, lease, sales contract, cell phone or
internet contract, insurance policy, credit

The IACC Cultural Committee welcomes our new members, Susan Carmen
Duffy, Mary Joyce D’Aurizio, Katie
Fischer, Amalia Plantone, Richard Santo,
Gaetano Scollo, Daniela Varone, Marisa
Vattana, and Ida Wilder. The Cultural
Committee will assist in promoting more
cultural activities for the community and
for students of Italian from area High
School Districts. Several activities for
our members and for the community at
large are in the planning. Our goal is to
make the Richard DiMarco Library more
accessible to anyone who is interested in
learning more about our Italian history
and culture. The library now holds an
impressive collection of materials, both
in Italian and in English, on every aspect
of Italian art, history and literature.
The Spring 2015 classes of Italian
will begin on March 24th and they will
be taught by Marisa Vattana and Daniela
Varone. In the hope that more young
people become involved and interested in
the Italian American Community Center
we will continue with a social hour at the
IACC for all the teachers of Italian in the
area. After two successful events sponsored in the past, the teachers are showing
more interest and can assist us in creating
more activities for their students. Two
essay awards on topics related to Italian
culture have been approved by the Cultural Committee and will be announced
to High School students of Italian in the
Fall 2015. Plans are being made also to
offer classes on cooking, wine making,
dancing and book reading.
The next Italian Cinema Night is
Thursday, April 16th at 7:00pm with the
film “Lo Smemorato di Collegno” - “The
Amnesiac” (1962) by Sergio Corbucci.

Gaetano Scollo will be on display from
March 27th to April 24th in the second
floor gallery. An “Art and Charity Night”
was held on Friday, March 27th with a
book signing of Gaetano Scollo’s latest
publication “Trazzera.” Proceeds from
the book signing and the sales of any
works were donated to the Mary Cariola’s
Children Center.
If you have any suggestions or would
like to become a member of the Cultural

Call for Nominations
The purpose of the Women of the Year Award program is to identify
the positive contributions of women in our community. We invite you to
nominate exceptional women you may know from your business, church,
school, or other professional or personal affiliation. The Women of the Year
Awards will be presented at an Award Dinner Ceremony on Friday, May
22, 2015 at the Italian American Community Center.
One award in each of the following categories will be presented:
Civic Affairs/Government Education Fine Arts Lifetime Achievement Award

Completed nomination forms must be postmarked by April 10, 2015.
The Women of the Year Award recipients will be selected from all the eligible nominees. The winners must be present at the Ceremony to accept
the Award. Previous Award Recipients are not eligible for nomination. To
be eligible the nominee must be a resident of the Greater Rochester Area
(including Monroe, Wayne, Livingston, Ontario and Orleans counties)
and have some Italian ancestry. We encourage you to forward this Call for
Nominations to others in your company, agency or organizations.

JUDITH RANALETTA is a career, Rochester-area
public high school teacher turned national clinician and
spokesperson for arts education who built an internationally renowned musical theater program in a local
school that previously had no auditorium. Now, over
600 of Ranaletta’s former students - including Broadway’s Kara Lindsay (Wicked’s Glinda), Nikki Renee
Daniels (Book of Mormon’s Nabulungi), Donna Lynne
Champlin (Sweeney Todd), Joe Reid (If/Then), and Jim
Augustine (Thoroughly Modern Millie), currently producing partner to 4-time Tony-Winner Hal Luftig - are
joining forces to nominate this outstanding teacher for
the first-annual EXCELLENCE IN THEATRE EDUCATION AWARD to be announced during the June 7 live
telecast of the 2015

JUDITH RANALETTA received her Master Degree
in Vocal performance from Ithaca College and did her
post-graduate work in Voice at the Eastman School of
Music and the Vocal Arts Symposium in Spoletto, Italy.
Judith’s students have gone on to achieve successful
careers in the Performing Arts, on Broadway, in National
Tours, in opera, on international recording labels, and
in film and television. Judith has twice been honored
with the Presidential Arts Scholar Outstanding Teacher
Award, once by President George H. Bush, and most
recently, by President Barack Obama. She has also been
awarded Outstanding Music Educator by the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra, and recognized by NYS County
Legislator, Maggie Brooks, for her Outstanding Artistic
contributions to the Rochester community.
Judith’s students have worked on more than 30 broadway shows over the past two decades, more than 25
national tours, and at more than 50 nationally recognized
theaters. Judith’s students are also theater instructors at
more than 30 k-12 schools and 10 colleges, including:
Harvard, NYU/Tisch, and the Yale School of Drama.

The photographer Gaetano Scollo, a native of Gela, Sicily, will exhibit his works
at the IACC.
A trip around the world with Gaetano
Scollo to discover through his lens hidden places and faces of Italy, USA, Kenia
and Mexico. The exhibit of photographs
"Walking on the street-photographs around
the worlds'' will be on display at the IACC
from March 27 to April 24, 2015 on the
second floor Gallery.
Gaetano will also exhibit his latest
publication “Trazzera,” which is a photographic journey throughout four different parts of the world, Italy, USA, Kenia
and Mexico with a common denominator:
Humanity. The book was published in
Italy and presented by Gaetano last month
during a tour of Torino, Milano, Roma,
Catania, Palermo, Gela and Benevento. The
presentation at the IACC is the first in the
USA. Proceeds from the silent auction and
from the sale of books and photographs will
benefit the Mary Cariola's Children Center
and the IACC. The Gallery exhibit will be
open Monday to Saturday from 12:00 noon
to 5:00pm; and Sunday from 12:00 noon to
3:00pm. The Italian American Community
Center is proud to sponsor and support
