What is CAS?
Coaching for Academic Success is
a holistic approach to supporting
students in defining, assessing and
achieving their academic goals.
We build confidence, intervene
early and often, connect to
resources and collaborate across
the college.

Developing CAS: Persistence Research
Vincent Tinto (1993) identifies three major sources of
student attrition:
1. Academic difficulties
2. Inability of individuals to resolve their educational
and occupational goals
3. Failure to become/remain incorporated in the
intellectual and social life of the institution

Connecting with Students
Every student in developmental
education courses has a coach
• Assigned to course sections at all
three campuses
• Introduce CAS during first weeks of
the semester
• Follow up on early alerts submitted
through Student Success Plan (SSP)
• Maintain consistent and continual
student communication: phone,
text, email and in person
• Follow up with faculty

Collaborating with Faculty
Opportunities to work together
• Notify students about coaching
(syllabus, class introductions,
announcements)
• Refer students through SSP early alert software
or email information to CAS
• Share resources, recommendations and
important milestones with the coach
• Invite the coach to present in class
