Literature Sources
● Use appropriate and credible sources of
literature.
● Although books may be used make sure that
their content is still relevant to your context.
● Wikis, blogs and forums should not be used.
Literature Sources
● Your work should be vendor neutral.
● Be careful when quoting vendor
documentation. Remember, vendors want to
make profit!
● Citeseer, ACM, IEEE, Springer Link &
Google Scholar are good literature
repositories.
Past Dissertations
● Allow your mentors to recommend past
dissertations for your reference.
● Do not just go and pick up random
dissertations from the library.
● Dissertations at the library are not graded!
Invalid Dissertations
● Simple comparison of technology.
○ Java Vs .NET
○ Android Vs iOS
○ Play Store Vs Apple Store
Invalid Dissertations
● Dissertations with the business aspect as
their main focus.
○ The main focus should be the technical element.
○ The business aspect may be used to sustain your
technical argument.
Invalid Dissertations
● Research based solely on interviews and
questionnaires.
○ These tools should be used solely to strengthen your
argument.
○ They should never be basis of your conclusions.
Valid Software Dissertations
● There has to be a research element with
academic value under investigation.
● Apply to a specific scenario
● Question various aspects of an existing
research
● Prototype is just proof-of-concept and not
market ready
