João Teixeira obtained his Licentiate (in Geophysical Sciences) and Doctor
(in Meteorology) degrees from the University of Lisbon, in Portugal. He was
at the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the
US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and the NATO Undersea Research Center
(NURC), before joining the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is part of
the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Currently he is Deputy
Director of the JPL Center for Climate Sciences, the AIRS instrument Science
Team Leader and Supervisor of the Climate Physics Group. He is also a
Visiting Associate and a Lecturer in Environmental Science & Engineering at
Caltech. His research Interests are in turbulence, clouds and climate. He
uses a variety of models and observations to understand the interactions
between the climate system and small-scale processes, such as turbulence,
convection and clouds - to improve climate prediction. He was recently
awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.
